Ship Supply question answered, thanks

Post by carnifex »

Ok, so I take a surface naval unit, move it out of a supplied base to fight some far off submarine.

Now we have two scenarios:

1) Oops! I miscalculated. After killing the submarine my surface unit doesn't have enough range to get back to a supplied zone.

or

2) Oops! After the fight I forget to move the ship back (even though it has range), and instead hit the End Phase button.

So now, for the rest of the game, my hapless surface unit will just sit there alone in his sea zone, unable to be resuplied and unable to move. In effect it's destroyed, except it just sits there, reminding you of your mistake for the next 20 turns.

What a silly system!

I can't send a transport with fuel, I can't row home slowly, I don't get any 'out of range' warning, nor do I receive a "You have potentially unsupplied ships" at the end of the turn. Bah!

Now, I'm not arguing that ships shouldn't use supply, but isn't there a more graceful implementation possible? I'm moving dozens of ships every turn and to punish me like that for forgetting to move one leaves a weird taste in my mouth.

Or am I missing something? Is my rant misguided? Is there a way to re-supply ships stuck in the middle of the ocean?

I believe you can connect to a supplied land zone with a line of transports. I'm not sure because I usually play Germany and the U-boats can go anywhere, they just run out of torps.... right Paul. [:D]

Carnifex;

Simply load supply onto a transport and move the transport into the sea zone. Voila! supplied ships! It is important to take fuel tenders (i.e. transports with supply) along witho you on long voyages. Create task forces that include their own supply so as to not have this problem later.

hope that helps!

SUbmarines do not use supply for movement. THey can always move their full move without supply cost. However, once they are empty of torpedoes then use must resupply them.

It explains most of these supply issues in the manual fyi.

wow thanks mike, didn't think of putting the supplies on a transport - i was visualizing transport ships as supply conduits, not actual replenishment vessels, so when i connected my 'stuck' ship to a supply chain, it didn't do anything.

ok then, rant = misguided due to ignorance :)

Yep. Most of the time you use transports as conduits, but occassionly you'll use them to move supply around (to shadow a fleet). Make sure to plan this in advance, however, as the "loaded" transport cannot move until the next turn.

Carnifex;

No problem! I had the same hair pulling out experience myself. Glad to pass on the "wisdom through defeat" that I learned.....

Good luck!
