attacking uboot pens

Post by Pocus »

Hi,

What is the factor used by planes when bombing subs in ports? ASW? anti-naval? anti-ground? I would have voted for anti-ground, as historically it demanded strat bombers with bombs weighting half a ton to pierce the uboots pens.

thanks in advances

Sub pens really didn't get phased until the British hit them with "Tallboy" at 12,000lbs and "Grandslam" at 22,000lbs. Only fit in modified Lancaster bombers.

Since combat against ports is combat against ports, you effectively have to construct "uboat pens" ie a bastion for ships from air attack, by buying Flak to defend the port heavily. That will actually result in shooting down planes not "armoring" the content of the content of the port, but the idea of needing to iinvest resources to protect an area with a port is not an outlandish abstraction.

You also get teh full benefit of your evaion rating when in port, a situation that makes it far more difficult to bomb ships in port than should be the case. A -1 to ships evasion ratings in port would be a good thing IMO, giving you an incentive to go after than there, and a necessity to invest in "uboat pens" or your subs get schwacked in port (what happened...). OR if you got to attack them with your Ground attack strength in a second attack like that you get in attacking airbases. Or both ;)

Right now port attack is sort of pointless. Unlees they are sitting there undended, and then they are exactly the same as if they were out of port. You are better off blockading them in than going after them in port. BEing in port makes you immune from sea attack, but should make you considerably more vulnerable to air attack.

There is no plan to change this though. Random musings on my part...maybe in WaW II ;)

so in essence its ASW against subs in ports? [&:]

And may I ask why a simple change can't be made for that? Thats not like we are asking for a new asset type, harbor fortification... Just checking and using another value for planes when they attacks subs in port.

You may ask [:'(]

I can only say the idea was declined. They feel that inherent port defenses compensate for the lack of manueverability.

well ok, you keep your evasion rating and it accounts for port defences. I was asking that depth charge is not used against subs in ports, but the historical bombs type (anti-land factor).
A point of detail I know, but when you add dozens of things like that, it equals to more "chrome" if done, and too much abstraction à la Axis and Allies when not.
My personal and humble opinion anyway. I know that coding any app, be it a game or something else is always an impressive feat.
