Fog of War

Post by hickmanj »

I've been trying to find in the forums if the Fog of War only makes it harder for the player (i.e. the computer still knows where all of your units are - especially subs) or if the computer simulates FoW as well?

Thx,

J

The computer does not play with fog of war rules. It will only impact human players. Something we should have put in the manual so it would have been clear.

I was wondering why the computer sumbaitch was bouncing so many of my subs and zeroing on my weak points... Not fair. FoW should apply to all...

This explains a lot. i'm relieved its not some error. Is there a specific reason for lacking an option to have AI fog of war? I suppose that would include another big component/variable in the decision-making coding for the AI? if its not a big deal for AI proper decision-making, I would vote that this be corrected--to include an option to turn on AI FoW.
Thanks

One problem right off the bat is the way the AI tests it's moves. At a minimum we'd have to allow the AI to undo moves that the normal fog of war rules would prohibit. The reality is that the AI has enough problems without trying to make it play this game using fog of war. Remember GGWaW is more similar to a boardgame than most computer games (intentionally), and most boardgames don't even offer fog of war. We added it as an option because we knew that human players would enjoy having a fog of war component in the game.

I think the game works perfectly well with no FOW on at all. I tried my first few games with it on, but it felt wrong.

The game really does have a boardgame feel to it, so the lack of FOW is not disturbing. I think even in Human vs Human games, I would be perfectly willing to play with no FOW. It becomes more like a chess-match that way with everything above the board.

i personally enjoy it without fog of war also. it makes it more friendly and conversational to play a game where you can see your opponent develop his game. Then you can discuss and learn from some aspects of his supply or movement strategies, rather then it being hidden.

Personally i'd prefer to play with fog of war for the simple fact it allows you more strategic options. If your opponent knows where all your units are and what their tech advanced stats are then they know exactly where they can strike and how you can respond. With FoW your opponent has to decide to take that chance, perhaps not knowing that 1 or 2 provinces back from the front line you have a massive armour unit ready to react. He also won't know that your lagging behind in unit production if, as i've done in my frist few games as germans agains AI, due to massive expenditures in tech advances.

but thats just my opinion on the matter [:D]

after i try a few more games can't wait to try out a PBEM game. been playing with no auto win rules off so strat will have to change, but its all good
