Subs?

Doesn't the german sub fleets sm very week in 1940? I've seen a single naked transport fleet destroy a sub fleet. And I've never seen a sub dmage a heavy or carrier.

The U-boats do seem a little underpowered, but this scale it is hard to tell what a transport fleet really represents.

after researching a single torpedo attack though, they really turn into killing machines. the jap subs start at 3 torp attack which is nice though.

its a question of balance. If they started at evade 3 (which you should seek if you want good uboots) then they would have been too overpowered for 40. And the German player could have researched evade 4 rather fast then (equivalent to having elektro-boot in 1941 then).

I've seen that - people do that to me all the time [:@]

BTW always keep the scale of the game in mind. Heavy fleet represents ~2 BBs with escorting ships. Carrier fleets is ~150 a/c worth of ship based planes (in case of Brits less than that though) so again around 2 fleet CVs + escorts.

Now, ask yourself how many BBs or CVs German subs sunk or damaged during WW2?

Lets see from memory... Courageous, Ark Royal, Eagle... 3 CVs sunk, perhaps some damaged. BBs... Barham, Royal Oak... was there any other BB sunk by German subs? So 2 BBs.

German sub fleet destroying british heavy fleet would mean all historic German successes vs. British BBs concentrated in three months period, in one part of the ocean [:'(] Possible, but won't happen in too many games... (though as I said it usually happens vs. me).

I'm sorta fudging it. I edited the research.txt so that at the first production phase SUB FLEET has 2 points already placed for evade and torps. I think this is resonable because Germany had shuch an intense concentration on subs; which is one of the reasons that they never spent much effort building a carrier fleet pre 1939 (one of the worlds great stratigic blunders).
