GGWaW Crashes Intermittently

Post by VI66_slith »

I have been exp. some crashes. Two to be exact. The first happens when Japan attacks Pearl, just as the movie begins. The second seems to happen just about whenever it wants to, although I am certain there is reason. The first crashes to my PC boot screen, and with the second described, just back to the desktop. My drivers are all up to date.

I have the same problem. Playing Germany, 1940 scenario. Game crashes to Windows when the Japanese AI is planning its moves. Really irritating cause it happened in the winter of 1943. Is there a fix for this.
I read in other posts that the game plays like a beta. I have to agree.

ejdee,
seriously though, why bash the game when its most likely something that can easily be fixed by asking for help and giving specific information of your problem? [:-] please read the other support threads about the crashing issues and then follow the appropriate instructions on how to get the best support.

the Matrix guys have been very nice and helpful to anyone who asks for help, and even to the guys who just randomly bash their game.. so be nice to them! [:'(]

also, just so I dont misunderstand you, what other problems are you having that make you think its beta?

I will leave it to Erik and/or Marc to try to troubleshoot your technical problem. There is one known crash that impacts everyone (64+ units in combat animations) that has been fixed in the first patch due out any day now. There are also several fixes in this patch that try to address various issues that some systems seem to be having with the game ( one fix in particular has been sent out by Erik to 4 customers with a similar problem and I have been told that this fix has worked with their systems). Given the sales volume which seems to be very good from initial reports, the number of problems has actually been reasonable for a PC game (with most users experiencing no problems, after hours and hours of gameplay). This does not make it any better for those of you experiencing problems, and we are committed to trying to work through these issues as quickly as we can.

The best thing I can suggest is that you post a dxdiag report here. Second, if you have a crash in game, please send a save to 2by3@2by3games.com. It is advisable to turn on the auto save preference option so you are more likely to have a save you can go back to to repeat any problem. If you have a save for the crash during the AI phase, please send it to us. We are committed to fixing problems as they are found, and also are continuing to improve the AI in the game to react to user feedback. Thanks, and sorry you are having problems. If you contact Erik, he may be able to send you a test version of the patch before it goes out to the public in case there are any further delays in getting the official patch out to the public (it is just completing internal test now).
All understanding comes after the fact.

To Joel Billings: Thanks for the advise. Have emailed 2by3 with the save game file.

To Traemyn: Do you work for Matrix games? I hope I didn't offend you with my observation re plays like a beta. I don't have the patience to read all the messages in this forum on how to fix CTW problems.

My opinion on why this game plays like a beta is because of the ff:
1. High system requirements for a game with very minimal graphics and which is not as complex as the first HOI.
2. The game play is similar to Strategic Command and Third Reich but I never had CTW problems with those games and they were played on older machines.
3. User interface is not intuitive.
4. The screen where units fight each other, to put it midly, looks dumb. It would have been better if they took it off entirely. If they let us have more control of the units ala Ages of Wonder or Heroes of Might and Magic then that combat screen would make sense.

Thanks for sending the save. I just looked and it hasn't made it to my inbox yet. As for the system requirements, we admit that this game uses higher system reqs than most traditional wargames. The improved graphics were the primary culprit and we decided this was a tradeoff worth making. It does stress many older systems, but we think most of these problems can be overcome. As for the combat animations, we made it easy for people to turn this off from the preference screen for those not interested. It does give you a clear picture of who is firing at who, and what the die rolls vs defense strengths are, things which can make the game combat mechanics easier to comprehend when first learning the game. We expect that many/most serious wargamers will turn these off after becoming comfortable with the combat system.
