David A. Winter: Currently there are 20 styles. Although it's dirt simple to make more if you care to I'm not sure you'd need to. We have everything from no mask, to the single bar (still used by a couple of kickers), to something that almost looks like a goalie mask.
Can we create face shields?
David A. Winter: If you want sheilds, just edit the bitmap to put them there.
An important update on facemasks:
David A. Winter: The face masks have changed somewhat. You can still make your own masks, but.... The game includes high resolution mesh based masks that match up with the current texture masks shipped with the game.
If you create a texture mask of your own, there will be no mesh based equivalent. So even in high resolution mode, other players will be using nice meshes and the player using your new mask will have the low resolution texture. And no, you can't create your own mask meshes and use them in the game.
Meshes are 3D models of the masks (just like the players and stadiums are done as 3D models). The meshed based masks look better because they're more defined, reflect the light and cast shadows. The texture based ones don't do that.
