Virtual Memory low

Post by AlvinS »

Greetings

The game runs great on my machine. 2.66Ghz 500mb RAM 80Gb HD, 128mb video memory. When I shut the game down I get a message that says Virtual memory is low. Will upgrading to the recommended 1Gb RAM correct this? The game runs smooth at the high video setting, but takes a while to shut down compared to other programs.

Great game[8D]

I adjusted my virtual memory and that seemed to work, but the game was still slow shutting down. This morning I upgraded to 1Gb RAM and everything is smooth as silk.[8D]

The game eats about 550 Megs of ram on with all the goods running. On a 512 Meg machine, you will be living in the swap file quite a bit, this will result in long startup and shutdown times as everything is paged in and out of memory.

Going up to a Meg of ram removes this constraint as you have seen.

I'm curious as to the communities experience paying this game at, or below, recommended system requirements. For a strategy game, the hardware requirements appear, on the surface, pretty steep. However, it also would appear that problems might crop up (amongst other reasons) depending on just what features are being used.

So, who's pushing the system limit here ? What features are you typically running (or not)
and what has been your experience with problems, slow performance, etc ....

Dropping down on the graphics mode reduces it be about 200 megs so a 512 meg machine will run it happy. A 256 meg machine should also be fine assuming you don't have many background apps running.

I'm running the game with only 256 RAM. Seems to work okay. I run it in the high quality graphics setting, but I've had to disable the AI movement graphics and the battle pop-ups. That's fine with me.

It actually didn't work well for me when I tried to run it with low quality graphics. Some of the menus - like the repair one - were illegible and unusable.

I haven't had much time to get into the game yet, but I think I've found a bug with naval units. When playing Germany and one of my submarines is damaged and is forced to retreat (and there's space to retreat to), it seems to just vanish and I've lost the unit. Am I missing something or is it a bug?

Plus, when Portugal allies with the Germans and I've got a bomber and a paratroop in Western France, why can't I air drop the guy into Portugal? Isn't the distance okay to do that?

That is correct, it has gone into the production queue for repairs.

So the damaged naval unit magically transports itself to a home port for repairs?

You can look at it that way if you like. Or, you can consider that during the three month turn, U-boats were coming and going to maintain patrols in the ocean region they were assigned to. Eventually, enough were lost or damaged due to ASW efforts that there were no longer enough operational subs and crews to exert an effect. A process of rebuilding U-boat squadrons with remaining experienced subs and crews is in process and will be completed soon.
