Great patriotic war (german version)
The air attacks continued against both the 11th Army airfields, where nearly 400 planes were destroyed and Schobert was killed as the surprise raid destroyed his Storch as he took off on a recon flight, and the 4th Panzer Army. Bomber losses were reasonably light for the damage done. Meanwhile, the outskirts of Tarnopol were reached by a large counterattack, leaving the panzers to the southeast at fairly low supply. The only problem was in the counterattack designed to free the troops from Bialystok, which failed miserably.
The Red Air Force reports nearly 10,000 planes ready for battle, with experience averaging over 71. They expect to be able to put up effective opposition in the air soon, for long periods of time. The air losses in the past alone show an improvement in the Red Air Force, and an inability of the part of the Luftwaffe to protect its airfields, even after earlier attacks did so much damage. Stalin is content for now with the situation in the air.

The Red Air Force continues to hit back, with the 11th Army suffering heavy losses on the ground. Also, fighters providing air support near Tarnopol shot down or damaged 130 Luftwaffe fighters and another 35 bombers, at a loss of only 85 planes. A heavy counterattack struck the Wehrmacht, seizing the rail junction again east of Tarnopol, and destroying over 100 AFVs. Other attacks in the south succeeded, while counterattacks near Brest-Litovsk failed to gain any ground.
Although Stalin's hold at all costs orders are proving costly, the overall situation does not appear to be a total disaster.

We might have underestimated the soviet colossus... The second defensive line of the enemy was as strong as the first and it held out the most attacks by the tired pnazer's. As result panzer losses are very high. The encirclement of Brest-Litovsk failed because the last army in the way was reinforced by a tank division. The simple solider of the werhmacht begins to wonder how many russians are still left to be butchered. Some succes was acchieved in the middle as a soviet army surrendered.

The air battles were not very effective this turn, although Munich was hit by an air raid that caused light damage to a Fw 190A factory there. Heavy counterattacks were launched, causing significant losses to the German aggressor but not regaining any of our lost territory. Brest-Litovsk was declared an open city to prevent its destruction while the defenders withdrew to better positions in the rear.

How will this end? without a total collapse of one side or the other this will end in a draw given the time and victory conditions. Then again i'd like to be in one of your positions just to 'blast' the other guy.

That is the impression I had for the first year was a draw was going to be the result. The Soviets couldn't successfully attack because not enough air strength, and the Germans were waiting and building up huge numbers of Panthers, Fw190As and He177s. I still tend toward a draw here, but with the movement I see some signs of hope for both of us. The Soviet manpower pool is being whittled down, although still at 20,000 squads, so it is possible the Germans can advance far enough to win, but I really doubt it. On the other hand, the Soviet air is reaching decent experience levels so I hope that the air force may soon be able to protect the ground troops enough to start attacking more, but again the strength is so balanced I doubt it will work. I think the big problem are the hard-coded changes to force effectiveness that leaves the Luftwaffe weaker, and possibly the Wehrmacht. We shall see though.Originally posted by Lokioftheaesir:

This game is now in '43 right? I wasn't aware of any penalties against the Germans in '43, and didn't know there were any arbitrary penalties against air forces on either side.
This is the kind of hard-coded stuff that irritates me. If I could "see" these penalties, I would take a crack at disabling them.
Based on my play experience, it always seemed that the Soviets suddenly jumped ahead of the Germans in the air early in 1943, and groups that had been training for long periods suddenly had large jumps in experience where they had been stuck at lower experience for awhile. In conjunction with this, it seemed like the Luftwaffe suddenly lost its edge and experience began dropping. In my current game, for example, I just checked and the Soviets have passed the Axis in average experience, although this could be due to other factors.Originally posted by Ed Cogburn:

However, I just ran a test using a Finnish air unit and a Soviet, and they went up and down in experience the same. The only difference I noticed was that the Finns consistently repaired damaged planes better, in 5 tests, so this may account for what I thought I was experiencing, in conjunction with strategic bombing and other factors. I will run a similar test later using a German air unit to see if it is the same. However, it does seem like the other minor nations have a tougher time getting the experience up, but it may just be because their experience starts out so low.

Of course with the total collapse of the soviets
<img src="biggrin.gif" border="0"> On the realsitic side I think I might be able to get Kiev, Minsk, and the Baltic states until the end of the war. Some heavy air battles were fought near Brest-Litovsk, with the Fw190slosing more planes than the Red Army fighters. Otherwise, it was quiet except for a few minor attacks, as many units were pulled back this week. Stalin exploded in rage, ranting about the number of divisions being shattered trying to halt the Panther and Tiger tanks. He demands steps be taken to stop them, while becoming more dependent each week on various drugs from his private physician to keep going. A successful counterattack along the rail line toward Odessa was launched, chewing up an infantry corps moving to the southeast, which cheered comrade Stalin slightly. Otherwise it was quiet.

Comarade stalin gonna need some more medicine as two more soviet armies were destroyed. Our forces got to Zhitomor and the city will fall hopefully within a few weeks. We are throwing everything at the soviets at the moment in the southern front, and the brutal amount of panzers slowly beginn to do serious damage to the extremely deep soviet defence. German industry is now ready to produce the new Me-262A! The order is to nly use the as fighters and they will hopefully destroy the soviet fighters with ease.

The Red Air Force took to the skies in massive numbers, pounding the invader's armored spearheads northeast of Odessa after it was discovered by the first escorted attacks that these forces had outrun fighter cover. The dazed survivors of this pounding were rounded up by the weak ground forces in the area, resulting in a massive disaster for the Germans. The result was a major disaster for the Germans with losses of about 1000 Panther and Tiger tanks, and thousands of men and guns. Comrade Stalin announced a day of celebration throughout the Soviet Union. Also, large numbers of Sturmoviks, horded throughout the war, were moved into the area to continue the counterattack if possible.
