Which is your favourite WWII fighter plane?

I like the Thunderbolt.

* 8 machine guns with plenty of ammo is groovy

* lots of armour is bueno

* could catch a Me262 with a really, really fast dive

* turning is for sissies

Oh! the Dora! That's a fun one too! Lots of big guns and ammo to blow stuff into little bitty bits ... and not much of that pesky turning either!

Can't take the punishment that the T-Bolt can though.

I always fancied the Spitfire for its beautiful lines. Pretty good performance, legs just too short.

For best all around performance, I'd have to go with the Dora also but the Bearcat was pretty good in its own right.

For fear factor alone, the A6M2 Zero early war. Late war, the Corsair. No Japanese pilot liked seeing that gull-winged beast screaming towards them!

German, non-jet:
TA-152 - It's an amazing plane. Great speed, superior manueverability, and impressive firepower. Short legged, and short supply though.

German, jet:
ME-262 - My best friend's father was involved in rebuilding flyable versions of these, and got to see the two seat training version up close. WOW! Unfortunately, Mr. Snyder died an untimely death while flying a vintage F-86 Sabre a few years back, and I don't know the state of the project.

US:
P-51D - Wow, always dreamed of flying one of these!

Brit:
Hawker Tempest - Fast fast fast.

IJ:
Eh, I dunno, maybe the George.

DO 335 Arrow - Overall best piston engine fighter of all time --- (Slightly biased on this, my dad was stationed at the Dornier plant after WWII (Oberfafenhoffen ??? not sure of the spelling) and has some interesting stories about how great this airplane was.

Guess I'm a sucker for punishment....that's why I've always been a fan of the P-39 and Brewster Buffalo (of course, the Russians and the Finns were fans, too). Also like the lines of the P-35 and P-36
