Japan ai

Post by Traveler »

Has anyone ever seen Japan be effective if PLAYER_JAP, PLAYER_CHI, PLAYER_UN are all computer controled? I've tried giving it extra supply, a + attack modifyer, and/or a transport bonus; but every game it goes no where in China, and ALWAYS attacks Hawaii (is this in one of the dat files?). And three or four turns after that PLAYER_UN is landing troops on the home islands.

With just 15 supply and the 200 Transport level, I've seen Japan be quite effective vs AI controlled China and WAllies. I've seen them totally overrun China and I've seen them take vast portions of the Pacific.

Where Japans AI is weak is:

1) Research. CAGs NEED to have Evasion researched before war with the WAllies. Without it, CAGs are a waste of time. Japan never does this and thus suffers HUGE CAG losses to BATTLESHIPS (of all things...)

2) Research. Light Fleet ASW. Again, this needs to be done before war with WAllies. Without it, protection of Transports becomes impossible.

3) Protection of Transports. In addition to the above, Japan makes little effort to escort or screen her Transport fleet. These are the lifeline and without them, Japan dies. They should be treated as such, but instead are often left hanging in the breeze and are killed off at FAR too high a rate.

If the AI was tweaked just a tad, I think it could play fairly well...at least as well as historical! ;)

In my last game I wanted to play a super axis and try for world domination. I gave both axis a +1 to combat and both the Germans and Japanese +50 to supplies. I crushed the russians and ended up taking out India and half of China.. I was disappointed though to see the Japanese doing nothing. Even after bombing the Chinese to dust the Japanese never moved their troops in to capture the resources, and with my super subs cruising around I wiped out the WA navy and Japan never tried to retake Australia or Hawaii. It just sat off midway and pounded the occasional WA boat to dust.

Granted this is way off the beaten path for AI to handle but still.. empty territories with resources and 10 units sitting beside it, should be a no brainer to take them.
Order is nothing more than Chaos on a bad day.

Well at least points are scored for historical accuracy :)
