Oof. I did a double-take at this one. These are words you don't often see in the same paragraph of an AAR: "Surface Combat" and "CV."

As soon as it came up on the screen, I hit "esc". Couldn't watch it. Come to think of it, I hit "escape" several times that turn.

If the weather goes against you that is it. Its a (justifiably) huge factor in the naval battles we have in this game.

Halsey played well and got really lucky. You were slightly over aggressive and got really unlucky.

A couple of months ago I had 4 CVs stumble upon a big Japanese convoy loaded with troops while they were on a raid that was supposed to hit Saipan. They attacked at long range and sunk several APs, and I moved them to murder the rest in the following turn.

Next turn the convoy is under thunderstorms, I have to run because of the possiblility of KB getting involved and the convoy gets away.

I can't fault your play that much, most of the time what you did would have ended in casualties on both sides, which may not be desirable for the Japanese but at least it would not look like this.

Those RN Cruiser TFs sure do a great job murdering transport convoys don't they?

ORIGINAL: irrelevant
As far as KB is concerned, from what I can tell from AARs and player comments around the boards, there seems to be a general feeling out there that KB represents some kind of magical force that doesn't sail in water like everything else but somehow walks over it!
Newt: Why do they tell little kids that?
Ripley: Most of the time it's true.

Only against inferior play, and at that with a simplistic, inaccurate and broken model.
Regarding Frank Jack Fletcher: They should have named an oiler after him instead. -- Irrelevant

I have too often engaged in this form of escapism myself....

Nail-biting at Trincomalee

Post by tsimmonds »

So next day there are many IJN TFs scattered about in the vicinity of Trincomalee. At Trinco was a Transport TF with a half-unloaded IJA division and Engineer regiment aboard; any transport with 300 load points of infantry or less stayed while the rest ran. I figured most of the boys would make it ashore to what is after all the most important battle, the point of this whole exercise....all AKs with supplies were similarly denied permission to retire. This was a tough decision, as supply is my bottleneck now, and I figure this will cost me plenty supply sunk on AKs, but the 80,000 troops ashore must get sufficient supplies to attack for another day or two at least.

KB and the errant SCTF reunite three hexes east of Trinco. Gloves are off, all strike a/c are set to naval strike range 4. Got plenty FP search, plus the inevitable surface combats/contacts will increase enemy TF DLs.

The Allied TFs appear to have set Trinco as their home base. Some incidental combat at sea is followed by Trinco harbor being cleared of Japanese ships and shipping. Several allied SCTFs park themselves there and await developments.

The fleeing IJN transports are hit time and time again by allied LBA. While some AKs carry supplies, nearly all the troop transports have unloaded completely.

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 20142 troops, 119 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 101855 troops, 765 guns, 120 vehicles

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese transports are massacred (most of them entirely empty) throughout the morning and afternoon; finally, at the end of the day an IJN naval strike hits home. How will the (reported) damage to the R class BBs affect the next day's action?

But in this game invasions can be carried out while being slaughtered.[:D]

Another flaw? It means amph TF's can never be turned away. Invasions can never be repulsed.[;)]

So why bother? The only reason would be to kill ships, and while you're doing it, you put your own at risk.

There's so much wrong in this report I don't know where to begin. Maybe with the land-combat model, which consistently gives weird results like shock attacks against organized defense, and then the attacker doesn't lose any more than the defender, and sometimes considerably less! [:D]

But like some people say, it's not a simulation it's a game.

Hi, Invasions can be replused but it requires surface combat groups to do it. When a transport TF engages in surface action it is moved off the landing hex. It can then move back the next turn but if another battle occurs it again retires. If the defender can control the landing hex the invasion is replused. Troops become disrupted when landing unless they are preped and the landing go some what smoothly. I'v lost more then 1 landing even though I got troops ashore. (A few days later I wished I had not landed them)
The Japanese are succeeding here because after the early turns they obtained control of the air and the intervention by enemy surface TF occured after the troops had unloaded.

We may not be able to tell from the report - but what about the supply ? Even in this game - supply takes a lot longer to unload than the troops - and a large chunk of troops with no supply would be dead meat for even a smaller force with good supply.

I had 20 or so AKs unloading supply while the APs were unloading troops. Always have AKs included with the first wave. There was just enough supply for one more full-strength shock attack the next day. Trincomalee was taken and the 3 damaged BBs were sunk by Kates as they retired.

And you probably captured more than enough supply to survive the counter-attack ... so ... it looks like you're ashore in Ceylon !!!

( My father was stationed there during WWII ... and my middle name ... Chandra ... is a legacy of that posting ... so I've heard many stores about the RN activities aboard that Island ! )

I hope so. I never can count on anything with Halsey around though. There was only about 8500 supply in Trinco, which puts it in the orange. He did a good job managing his supply there. And I expect the whole RN replenished there the day before....

Nice name; good story. I hear that part of the world is a fascinating place to visit. I expect it was especially so during those times.

I didn't say you were ashore to stay - just ashore [ [for now ! ]. Tommorrow is another day ! If he has well suppled UK division and Armored Bde comming for you from Columbo then watch out !!

He was scheduled to para-drop into Burma with Recvr/Transmitters to relay magic intercepts ( they were called "M" teams ) fortunately his equipment never arrived - so he spent 44/45 sitting at HMS Anderson ( the RN Navy base at Galle ... pronounced Gaw-Lee on the SE tip of the Island ) training and partying ! "M" Teams had about a 0% survival rate - so I probably owe my existence to the shipping clerk that mis-routed his radios !

There won't be any counterattack against 3 reinforced IJA Divisions. Might as well call it 5 Divisions. I'd have to use every combat LCU in India to even try.[:D]

An airforce is already operational out of the captured base, after one day. More easy VP's for the IJN when Columbo falls. They'll be lots of dead troops then! The RN has shot it's wad, and the RAF is dead! It only took a week to do it![;)]

Just a few fighters. You didn't leave me enough supply to base bombers there[;)]

Maybe. First things first though, I have to figure out some way to get supplies in there with 550 mines in the port and all my MSW sunk. I suppose I could use my many wrecked APs to clear some of them out[:D]

A week, plus two months of planning and organizing. But you're right and you know I agree, the tempo of ops is too high.
