Anyone have a newbie squad they would recommend? It's so difficult to win a campaign mission. I've made a few different squads, tried the novice missions about 5 times and it's pathetic. I can't do any real damage while they mop the floor with me.

Postr a printout of your squad and we can see whats wrong with it. Perhaps its not the squad but your tactics. Play some skirmishes against the weakest AI first. Which campaign did you tackle ?

The biggest problems I have in battle with all my squads is the time it takes to get an accurate scan, accurate shooting and staying in optimal range for various weapons. It seems like the enemy moves faster and is much more accurate than me. Not that I want an easy game. I do prefer a challenge... [&o]
Campaigns I've been trying to beat are Savannah and Rebel Hunter. I could probly beat some of Deep Core but I quit halfway through the first mission because the dummy titans are a little boring you know. [;)] I'm sure I'll get better but after about 12 straight losses I just can't seem to get the hang of it. Best I've done was on the Baptism of Fire mission. I killed one of their titans and heavily damaged the other two before they killed my titans. Did feel good to finally get a kill! Thank you.

First off, don't worry about Indirect Fire yet, that is only really helpful with the heavy and assault ATs with lots of racks of missiles. Next, aim for 60% in a combat skill for each jock. It might not be possible, but it's a good rule of thumb. Finally, as for tactics, get close and personal. I've noticed that, for the first battle or two, the only way to get the job done right is to charge in and smash every that isn't a friendly. The Swift Death you've choosen if great for that as is the Shadow. Concentrate on one enemy at a time, switch as soon as he becomes incapacitated (i.e. loses a leg or lower torso).

Don't try to raise all attributes at once. Concentrate on the main attribs for your jocks' main weapon skil (usually Rea and Dex), go for at least 12, 13 if possible. That'll allow you to raise skills to ~60%. Don't waste DPs on attribs and skills that aren't really useful at start. Race is important, the Leader shouldn't be a CC jock (you don't want him to die) - keep that role for Cyborgs or Androids.
As for tactics, don't fire on the move, and wait for your target to stop moving (or turns) to fire. Manage your heat carefully. Charges are good to drive your target to the dirt (if your CC and pilot skills are acceptable), making it easier to hit by the rest of your squad.

Thanks to your tips I finally won a battle! (Baptism of Fire) The battle started slow with the first half feeling like it was going to be yet another loss. Focusing on one enemy at a time like suggested payed off though as I exploded one of their titans which also killed another nearby titan with collateral damage and one of mine. (and my jock grr) [X(] Another of my titans sustained heavy damage while finishing off the last one. My two other titans didn't have a scratch on them and dished out some nice long range damage, though they did still miss a bit too often for my liking. It seems weapon skill is very, very important in ToS. In the end though it was a pyrrhic victory with the loss of a titan and a jock and not enough money to replace them. Hope I can continue with only three from here.

Congrats for the victory! You'll have to watch out for those engine explosions though, they are your squad's worst nightmare like you've already experienced. Calling shots to the legs (or head, though it's a bit more difficult, but also nets you Bounty money) is a safe way to disable oponents - and you'll get better salvage too. Of course, at your current squad level that may be a little hard. Power Axes aimed at a prone target are deadly.
When an opponent is partially disabled, get out of his hex and field of fire, and disable it from afar with your supports. Take the opportunity to scan partially disabled opponents before disabling the last one, to gain some OXPs.
Ganging up on one opponent at a time makes you disable your enemies faster, reducing your repair bill, so it also helps your budget. Managing your budget is also very important. You may also want to try starting with only 3 jocks if you feel you're having financial problems at the beginning. That'll allow you to better deal with a battle gone sour.

You might want to use ATs with Neutron Blasters, they can kill the jock in an enemy AT netting you both the bounty and a high salvage bonus. And, at lower levels, enemy jocks and ATs tend not to be able to resist the effects all that well (low con and low life support).
