How far are you into your PBEMs?

Post by U2 »

Hey guys,

Just wanted to check how far you've come into your campaigns (PBEM) Currently in late March 1942 vs Kid.

That was one of the first PBEMs I started and I've learned so much from those games.

Kid held Manila till March 1942 and I lost so many men and artillery and it has sort of put everyhting on hold. Lost so much time....

Started a new PBEM against and old "enemy" in Finland. Used what I had learned against Kid and have broken the resistance in the PI and it's early January 1942. I think the main island will be mopped up by late January 1942.

I don't think of PI as the priority. What's the hurry, they aren't going anywhere. I'd rather use the extra troops elsewhere, then finish off PI after the SRA and Malaya are largely taken. By then it's a lot easier as supply is gone.

I have 4 games going, all started with 1.3 last fall. Three are in June-July 42, the 4th is the end of March 42.

I've got two started in 1.3.

One is in May of '42 against Mogami and one in March of '42 against Wobbly.

I am enjoying both of them alot. Two different styles of play I'm getting hit on Java by both of them currently. Wobbly making that move a month ahead of Mogami.

Wobbly just made a deep territory invasion of New Caledonia in March '42. Noumea fell yesterday.

There are so many ways this game can play out. That's what I love about it.

Patch 1.3 game late aug 42, 2 day turns, I as japan have done badly, stalemated in China, getting clobbered in Burma(pushed back by massive allied bombers),Still have lower SRA to capture, fighting in New Britian. Positive still have most of KB, 1 CV in Yards for another 6mo. Sunk 3CV's and although I did not get 1 BB at pearl I have sunk 7BB's since. Air power is starting to swing against me everywhere and I'm just starting to ge better planes.

one game started as 1.1 down to August 42 (versus warspite as Japan) He will probably auto win in Jan 43.
One game started as 1.2 against Freeboy as allied, where Japan (that would be me) is rapidly running out of steam in May 42
One game started as 1.4 against Brigada, where I'm allies and miraculously am holding my own in Jan 13 42 (we are playing assuming both Lex and the big E were heavily damaged at Pearl and stay out of the game until April 42)

As Allies
- July '42 vs Belphegor. Getting hammered [:D]
- April '42 vs Drex. Much more even. Manila has just gone but I still hold Clark and Singapore although both are besieged. I have just managed to lose PoW plus pensecola to a rash raid and Lexington has just made it back to San Fransisco to recover from her Dec '41 raid on the PI landings [:)]

As Japanese
- Feb '42 vs LtFighter. We are going to restart in 1.5. I have managed to get three of KB hit, Shokaku very badly, but did bag Enterprize.
- Jan '42 (with Mogami & Admiral Laurent) vs String, Bill Durant and Dirty Harry. See the AAR. String who appears to control the UK and Chinese forces (and Dutch?) is a very aggressive opponent. The most aggressive I have played against on either side [:)]

You should see String's AAR on the Paradox forums.

He plays the Mahan doctrine to the hilt.

All 2 days, all as Allied all as V1.3 or 1.4.

vs Alan. Feb 1942, and I still have all my carriers <g> He is moving along nicely in this game and is an OLD PacWar opponent and having fun re-kindling that friendship.

vs Scott. June 1942. Lost 3 carriers still have a sliver of SRA left. PM is in good hands. China and Burma is holding but a mess. We have a couple of hot spots, but feeling stronger as each day passes.

vs Steve - We had it to Sept 42 from a full campaign, before I stoped as IJN. Restarted on one with campaign starting post SRA (May 42). That one is Jan 43. Major damage to the CVs. He has sunk all mine, but I have sunk a couple of his and got VERY lucky on a gutsy move to Toyko oport attack nd caught many in dry dock. Did not sink any but damaged several of them. Then we had another CV engagement near PH later and both came out bloody. We are both hiding now <g>

vs Dave. June 1943 Lost all the CVs earlier. Gosh it is nice to get Lady Luck and York as shiny new Essexs <g>. He totally beat me to a pulp. Game was going to auto win but we both agreed that we would continue. A lot of time invested and Dave set up his economy for the long haul. Those Corsairs, P-38s really hold their own. Something for all you beaten up Allied players to look forward to. Things are pretty quite right now. I do not have the strength to push yet, and Dave is a smart player and is just digging in. If I can win it will not be until 1946 <g>

As stated, all you Allied players the planes get a LOT better. Starting with the P-38 in the fall of 1942 and then the "Killer" Corsairs soon thereafter, it will really make a big diffreence in air battles.

At this point, IMHO, air superiority is the key. Find a nice spot to train those pilots.

Two PBEM as Japan, both started at the same time with v1.4:

_ vs DenisonH, date is 3rd Feb 1942. I ignored PI so far, only took N luzon, but I reinforced in late January and felt confident to advance to Clark Field and lay siege here. I don't hope to do anything else until some time. Mindano should fell in the current week. S Luzon (Legaspi, Naga) is still in Allied hands and has never been attacked.

On the other hand, the four NW Australia cities, Timor, Kendari, Tarakan, Brunei, Kuching and surrounding bases, Palembang, Malaya & Singapore, half of N Sumatra, Andaman Islands and S Burma up to Mandalay (still Allied but under siege) are Japanese so I think bypassing PI to use troops elsewhere is a good idea.

I have also been very quiet in the Pacific. I took Wake at the second attempt in mid December and just took Giulberts with Navy troops (islands were empty) with support of the KB, that swept the waters before the convoys and surprised and sank 2 US CA and 2 DD. Rabaul and Solomons have not seen a Japanese soldier, ship or plane yet.

_ other game is the team game with Hoplosternum (see above). Date is around 20 January. I have seen another player as agressive as String once but he was not so good and lost much more planes and ships for far less success.

Just have one going with TristanJohn. We're in late June 1942, averaging about 3 turns a day.

Right now we are kind of stalemated while awaiting the start of his offensive sometime in the next few weeks. He bombs at night, I duck.

It's common sense, really.

It basically advocates for the priority destruction of the enemy fleet, massive concentration of striking power, continuous offensive action, central interior communications, and the importance of forward naval bases.

The initial Japanese offensives into the SRA were perfect examples of concentration of force against a weaker and thin spread adversary, which is essential practice of said doctrine, and you've been whacking your opponents over the head with it in the South Pacific.[:D]

The big problem is once you start, you absolutely have to win the war with it. Mahan's theories leave little room for defensive strategy.

If you want to read up on him (it's interesting stuff, I assure you), his full name was Alfred Thayer Mahan.[:)]

The basic point of Mahan was establishing control of the sea within which your interests lie. Mahan does not make defensive strategy difficult at all from what I've read. Mogamis aims in our match are basically Mahan's. Gain control of the sea around the areas you wish to invest using overwhelming force. No reason why this overwhelming force cannot be brought to bear in a defensive fashion in waters friendly to oneself. If KB survives virtually intact, KB and LBA can bring some serious firepower to the table against an enemy attempting to achieve control in unfriendly territory.
