Bombur (allies) vs mapr (Japan): playtesting Bombur´s Guadalcanal scenario

-Well, after the disastrous playtesting of my scenario against the AI, I´m back to playtest it against a human player. mapr is a skilled opponent who, for two times, was able to turn the tide against me when he was being badly beaten both in UV and WiTP. Furthermore, he never lost a long UV game, so I expect him to be a much better opponent than the AI. For those who missed my first AAR, here are the changes I made in the editor:

Guadalcanal experimental changes

1-All bomb loads multiplied by 0,454 (so max bomber load in the screen is expressed in kilograms), except Avengers (800kg)
2-All aircraft ordnance weight multiplied by the same factor, except the torpedos (798)
3-Max AF size downsized (max. possible now is 6)
4-Didn´t change loads for Soviet aircraft as they don´t take part in the game
5-Bombload for naval attack was decreased for a max 4 bombs for all level bombers able to carry more
6-The 18in Mk12 torpedo now has a load cost of 681
7-Starting AF downsized
8-Durability for Nells and Betties decreased to 28
9-Corrected bombloads for each squadron of level bombers

1-Shortland starting AF size increased to one
2-Accuracy for depth charges decreased by 50% (rounded to higher)

-PM starts as a 3 size airfield. This will make level bomber operations very difficult in the early game, but it seems it wasn´t a good choice, as PM actually was a developed airfield by Aug/42. Could someone give us info on B-17´s operation from Port Moresby in the second half of 1942?

-Well, it seems my enemy already told you about the terrible events of 09/08/42. A IJN surface TF was able to reach Tulagi undetected and launched a devastating attack againt local USN forces. Cruisers in Guadalcanal failed to react to the enemy. We lost 1 CLAA, 2 DD, 3 APD and 1 DMS. The action could had ended in a big victory to IJN, if it wasn´t for one small detail. It seems the Japanese admiral became too enthusiastic with his target practice on small allied ships and his forces retreated too late. When the day came, they were at range of our dive bombers. The unfortunate ships suffered massive atacks from USN carriers. Only one CL (Tenryu) sank, however, at least three heavy cruisers suffered serious damage and we sincerely hope that one or two will sink while going back to the homebase. Meanwhile, Betties achieved some success against surface ships in Guadalcanal. The day seem to have ended with a Japanese victory, but crippled ships from both sides are still making their way back to home ports. Another noticeable detail is that F4F´s failed to intercept enemy Betties, althought they were only one hex from their targets, however, those fragile bombers suffered some losses too. No less than 7 Betties were lost to AA fire.

-The fleeing IJN cruisers are still in range of my SBD´s, but now they had to attack with 500lb bombs. To our great dissapointment, it seems Japanese heavy cruisers are virtually impervious to our smaller bombs. The Aoba took now less than 24 direct hits withouth any penetration (althought its superstructure was devastated and lots of weapons systems were destroyed). On the other hand, the IJN light cruiser Tatsuta was sunk, increasing Japanese losses to 2 CL´s.

-Notice that there were lots of Subs/ASW combat withouth losses. It seems the new sub warfare system is working.

-So the amphibious assault on Tulagi and Guadalcanal is over. US Navy suffered relatively heavy losses, but also inflicted some pain on the enemy fleet. Ships retreated in good order and there was some submarine action. Japan lost its first submarine in deep water, while the USN had another DD mortally wounded. The first assault on Tulagi failed. Intel is investigating what happened with damaged IJN cruisers. A radio intercept suggested that Aoba´s commander gave order to abandon ship.

-Good news. Intel confirms the sinking of CA Aoba and DD Uzuki. The ships were unable to reach Rabaul, it seems...things are even better after Japan lost another sub. The agressive Japanese strategy of using the subs against heavily escorted carriers groups costed them 2 subs, but also allowed them to sink a DD. If they manage to sink or damage heavily even one carrier they will be successful.

-A day of heavy submarine activity. An USA cruiser was heavily damage (and almost certainly is lost), while the Japanese lost more three subs and had a fourth damaged. Losses for the Japanese are 7 subs vs. 2 DD and 1 CA (assuming it will sink). On the other hand, two USA groups with orders to bombard Tulagi and Tassafaronga failed to accomplish their missions, I don´t know why. One of these groups had orders set to patrol/not retire by mistake, this resulted in some attacks by Rabaul based Betties, but the CAP from Saratoga saved the day. Finally, after the carnage of two days ago, Betties paid a visit to Port Moresby, this time escorted by lots of Zeros. The enemy is flying Zeros from Lae too. The PM CAP was decimated. No less than 11 P-39 shot down, for the loss of 4 Betties and 2 Zeros. Another assault on Tulagi failed.

-A comment: I changed the accuracy and damage made by depth charges, but it seems all I got was an increased efficacy of submarine attacks. It´s possible that this bloody combat is the result of agressive use of subs by mapr, the route from Guadalcanal to Lungaville is infested with dozens of submarines. I don´t know how these ships were used in Guadalcanal, but it seems the Japanese were somewhat cautious with them.

I read in some other post regarding depth charge (device) accuracy that the lower the number, the more accurate the weapon. You might increase the accuracy and see what that does.

-I think this is not correct, because (1) in the database, Japanese depth charges have lower accuracy values and (2) latter allied depth charge (Mk9) has a very high accuracy value. But I can make some tests with this, if you think this hypothesis could be true. However, I have the impression that subs are now less vulnerable, when looking at individual combats (they sometimes survive). What seems to happen is that (1) this changes were still not enough and (2) my opponent is very agressive. My TBF´s are doing ASW flights and the hexes surrounding my carriers are full of submarines, the trouble is that these carriers are heavily defended by escorts and there is an ASW TF with them. I estimate that 3/8 subs lost by mapr were hit in attacks vs. CV TF´s and another 2 in shallow waters. If he used his subs more cautiously he, maybe, could get less losses (and somewhat less victories). Look to the fact that, while his losses were high, he was able to sink no more than 3 fast warships in two weeks.

-Japan lost the 8th submarine in a heroic attempt to attack US carriers. Vals escorted by A6M3 attacked PM from Lae. P-39´s shot down one Zero (with one loss for themselves) and flak shot down 3 Vals. Minneapolis sank due to damage caused by an enemy submarine yesterday.

-Strange things are happening. My submarines are detecting heavy naval activity South of Truk. Lots of DD´s, CA´s and transports are moving South, no Carriers or Battleships detected. Furthermore, a lonely ML attempted a sucide mission near Guadalcanal. Is the enemy using his ships to spend my air ordnance? If he is doing this, he got a big success. No less than 98 SBD´s were ordered to attack the target.......aircrews onboard the carriers were placed on maximum alert for a possible CV vs. CV battle. But there are also good news. Another sqadron of P-39´s arrived in PM and was able to defeat a small enemy raid by sheer numbers. My fighter shot down 4 A6M3 and 1 Val, losing 3 P-39´s.
