5" rockets on Unryu class

Post by pauk »

greetings...

I've done some tests in '45 scenario. Picked Wasp and Amagi for one on one CV battles. After two rounds (two battles in two days) i checked ammo. Info screen shows less AA gun amo, but number of 5" rockets (2) stays unchanged. Looks those rockets weren't fired.

Does anyone know how 5" rockets works?

All they are is a rocket with a wire attached. It is like putting up a very short duration barrage balloon. The intent is that low flying a/c will get tangled in the wires. Dont know if it was ever really used operationally.

Perhaps your strikes did not come within their ceiling, which is surely quite low. What was the altitude of the strikes?

avengers were on 3.000 ft. IIRC ceiling for rockets is 5.000.

The Brits had the same arrangement on their "king george the v" class BB's, called " UP" unrotating projectile (or something)

was the bug with the AA rockets fixed? In previous versions it was found that they were listed as ASW rockets and therefore would not fire at planes. perhaps this is still the case

Didn't know this. Since rockets are not firing it still could be the case.

The Japanese rockets were a barrage weapon with an explosive warhead and a time fuze. I'm sure it was all very pretty to watch, but I don't see how it could have been any more effective than a gun barrage pattern.
The British UP Mk I "planted" a parachute-equipped drifting mine in the path of an attack. One of the delights of this system was the parachute which occasionally got homesick. You can't go home?--well, no one told the parachute.

I wouldn't underestimate the fear of a pilot or an aircrew of unguided rockets. Germans used this to foce bomber formations to seperate. Don't know the weapon's name right now, but IIRC it was not uneffective.

Wgr 21 - kind of rocket-propelled grenade (unstabilized) with a 41-kg warhead. Partly responsible for the losses during the Schweinfurt and Regensburg raids.

R4/M 'Orkan' - fin-stabilized rocket with a 0.5-kg warhead. Only 10.000 produced, credited with almost 500 kills.

hello again...

thanks guys for useful information...

now, question for mods /Mr.Frag/Mogami/....

Those 5" rockets on Jap. carriers:

a) not working propertly ("asw bug")
b) they are put in the game just for historical reasons (and they are not supposed to fire)
c) something else? (what?)
