hey guys, i was thinkign about buying this game(im gonna get yelled at for this) but im very new to wargaming/strategy gaming and i dont know if i want to buy the game then ge tmy ass kicked at it, over and over and over by the AI. so im wondering how "newbie friendly" this game is and if i might possibly get some help with it if i bought it
damn it feels good to be young
RE: ummmmmm
Jimmy;
This game, World at War, is probably one of the best war games you will ever find! You have chosen to get into this type of gaming at a historic time.
The game itself is extremely "newbie" friendly (I have 100+ high school history students playing) and in general is easy to pick. What is spectacular about the game is the nuances of strategy that you can develop using the very friendly mechanics.
As for help, there is a vast panorama of gamers on these forums that are always willing to help with strategy and game rule/mechanics. Heck, the developers are even in here chatting! How often do you get advice from the guys that made the game!
It would definitely be worth the money (and getting yelled at by the wife/husband![;)])
Good luck and drop a line if you need more help! (or an opponent!)

You might get your butt kicked by the AI at first, but you can give yourself a better chance by playing as the Soviets or maybe the Western Allies or China. You can also play your first few games on easier difficulty levels, which give you advantages vis-a-vis the AI.
I think you'll find that it's pretty to get into WaW. The interface took me a little while to get used to: I kept moving troops by accident. I still do so once in a while. But other than that, it's really easy to learn. Just not so easy to master.

Yes, we insipid teachers of the youth of America are devious opponents in war games!

RE: ummmmmm
that's because us old farts are crowding the WoW servers so the younger folks seek refuge in less populated strategy forums

Ah, 14. A good age to start.
I started at 13, back when wargames were on paper maps with stacks of units that were half inch square cardboard counters. That was 30+ years ago.
My first game was one called Year of the Rat by SPI. Over the years I never lost a game playing as either side. The one draw I had was ironically playing the NVA against a vet who had served in Vietnam. [;)]
He used a strategy that seemed very unorthodox for a Vietnam game. He made a continuous line like you would expect someone to do in a WWII game. Very frustrating not to be able to beat that approach. [:)]
Naturally, my record with the dozens of other games I played was not nearly so stellar as with that one.

RE: ummmmmm
lol yah i guess you guys are probably happy to see a young kid getting into it, but yah i was reading the forums before the game came out, i would have joined in but i was only 13 then, my birthday was april 4th. i heard arguments about this game going retail and more "mainstream" and that matrix was tryign to pull in more "mainstream" gamers. well i play halo and final fantasy rpgs, so i guess im a "mainstream" gamer. so to all the people who thought retail was a bad idea for this game, i me being on this server is proof your wrong. and matrix good job, you plan worked[8D]

Jimmy;
If you were in my US History class, you would be playing World at War right now! I have my students playing since last week. They love it!
Glad to see young people getting into, and learning about American (and world) history.
Once you get started, feel free to ask questions. There are lots of us "old" guys willing to blather on endlessly!
Good luck!
Mike

geez, where were you when I was taking history in high school!?!? [&o] i wish i could've logged my hours on civ2 and panzer/allied general for my final project
RE: ummmmmm
I wish you hadn't mentioned those games (civ2, PG, AG)... I might have to start going back to my support group <twitch>. I shudder to think of all the good I might have done for the world and myself had those games never been released. Then again, the world can never have enough armchair generals, right?geez, where were you when I was taking history in high school!?!?
