Query: translink around Africa/ South-America

I've been playing as the WA for a bit and am wondering if some of you vets can shed some light on a query.

Do the transport chains around South-America and Africa actually serve a purpose, assuming that a link is maintained thru the Med?

As I understand it, resources move through friendly territory, so 1 transport on the West-african coast and 1 off Brazil should be enough to get all the resources in the 2 continents.
Is there perhaps another benefit I haven't seen yet?

The benefit is that usually, the Italian fleet prevents an allied transport chain through the med - then you need the southern transport chain to maintain contact with India and North Africa.

Plus they make nice replacements for the innevitable sunk trannies in the North Atlantic!

its nice to use the africian chain to re-enforce cairo before a german attack, but I've never seen/used the south american link.

All those transports allow you to ferry Indian and Australian units over to the European at the start and units back to Asia when Japan starts to expand.

Also, it's a useful backup route for supplies if Japan is succesfully eliminating transports in the Pacific.
