I don't *know*,and it would depend a bit on what you mean with "critical" but my guess would be that huge infantry losses would be the most damaging to the Soviets in 1941, since most of the tanks and planes are junk and must be replaced anyway. But on the other hand, having lots of that junk left might allow the Soviet player to survive 1941, so its hard to tell.

I believe there are no "critical losses" if you manage to hold Leningrad and Moscow. Even if your army is too weakened for a great winter offensive it should regain enough strength during the winter month to let you survive the summer of 1942.
On the other hand, if you lose those two cities it will be almost impossible to win no matter what the losses are.

Im sorry Micha but I must disagree with you. If the germans not managed to crush the soviet army the russians can do a powerful winter counteroffensive that sure will reconquer the cities (its a long, long winter for the germans) and can inflict prohibitive losses for the axis that seriously will weak their next offensive.
Conquer both cities is very important but destroy the Red Army as fighting force, is for me, the main priority.

I agree with Josan the soviet armys must be destroyed before general winter 1941 or at the very least badly mauled so the russians will only launch a limited counter-attack if at all. <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

I think, if the germans can take and hold Moskwa and Leningrad, they will go to win the game in the year 42. In this case the winter is no problem for the germans.

Probably the solution is in the middle:take at least one of the two cities and at the same time destroy the biggest number of soviet units u can.

Has anyone ever played a game where the German player did not win after conquering Leningrad and Moscow? Maybe I am wrong and it IS possible. But I still believe that the loss of both cities severely weakens the Russians. And in order to take these cities you usually have to destroy a lot of Soviet units anyway.
Chairman, in a game against the AI I once destroyed almost 100K squads and 20K tanks before the winter, and there was not much of a Soviet winter offensive after that. But as we all know, the AI is stupid.
