Intermittent startup crash

Post by f15eagle »

About 50-75% of the time after playing the game, I cannot start it again without refreshing my video drivers and rebooting. I've tried several versions of Nvidia's drivers and have had the same result.

Usually, it won't even load the game's startup screen and simply stays at the Windows desktop and gives me a "WaW exectuable has encountered a problem" message. Most recently, I rebooted the machine without refreshing the video drivers and the screen turns black as if it is going to load the game before CTD with same error as above.

I have attached my DXDiag file.

Do you have any codec packs like "Nimos Codec Pack" or the dreaded "Ace Mega Pack" installed? I notice you have a whole lot of 3rd party codecs and DirectShow filters running.

I don't have either of the codec packs you mentioned installed, but I did uninstall an "Angelpotion" codec. After a reboot, I was able to load the game normally. Since this has been an intermittent problem, it's hard to be sure if that fixed it permanently or not. I'll let you know if it happens again.

Thanks for the response.

The "Angelpotion" codec is known for a lot of issues. It´s one of the "bad" codecs out there.

The problem reocurred today. This time, it didn't even change from the Windows desktop, but just gave me the error message. Refreshing the video drivers and rebooting didn't help this time. If I'm having a codec problem, can you give me some pointers on isolating and removing the offending files? I have scoured my system for codec packs and can't find any more. Any other ideas?
