Julius Caesar wont run
Julius Caesar wont run
Installed Julius Caesar ok apart from had message at beginning about updating DirectX, i already have Dx9.0c on my comp so dont understand that bit. When i open the Julius Caesar Game menu then click on Play i get this message come up.
TSJC.exe Common Language Runtime Debugging Services
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled
Process id=0x484 (1156), Thread id=0x48c
Click ok to terminate application
Click cancel to debug the application
If i click on cancel to debug i just get another error message. Anyone have any ideas what the error message above means or possible solution.

RE: Julius Caesar wont run
Just found the redist.msi file from other thread, it has fixed it for me also, game runs now. I only just downloaded game about 20 mins ago and beleived from reading other thread that this problem had been fixed and all downloaded versions of Julius Caesar were already updated so would'nt have to mess about with the redisd.msi file. Will i be able to download game again once this problem has been cured.

RE: Julius Caesar wont run
Can you confirm for me the file name, size and date of the installer you downloaded, so that I can make sure that the online store is sending out the right version?
Second, did you allow it to install .NET and DirectX as asked when the installer started?
If it's the correct one, you should be able to go into the /redist sub-folder of your installation and see two .msi files there.

- Erik

Budge4,
TS:ATG and TS:JC both require Managed DirectX, which is an optional component when installing DirectX 9b/c. Although most users believe that they can "skip" this installation step, you likely do not have Managed DirectX installed.
In your case, did you "skip" this step and then run the MSI file after? If so, that would explain that the installer was ok, but you had selected to skip that step in the installation. If not, please confirm the version as Erik wants to make sure the DR installer is correct.
Thanks,
Deride

Deride,
I'm having the same problem. I had installed with the original file and update download, then uninstalled, downloaded the "new" installer, and reinstalled. The main window comes up with the "play" and internet options, everything works EXCEPT "Play"!!! You have to reinstall in order to play the game, and all it does is state that you do not appear to have directx 9c installed; you press ok to install it, it does not ask anything else, it quickly installs ONLY directx, you get the configuration screen and hit ok, and you're good to go in about 20 seconds (no new game install, only directx). I must do this every time I want to play the game. Obviously, something is wrong.

Offbase,
I can't duplicate this at all with any machines here. Are you running anything else while installing the game, like a virus checker or such? Can you confirm the file name, date and size that you are using for the reinstallation?
Have you posted a DxDiag file yet? If not, please do so. Please also post any .log files from this latest attempt to click Play.
Regards,
- Erik

RE: Julius Caesar wont run
Hi Erik and Deride
The file that fixed Julius Caesar for me was called
mdxredist102004.msi 3.57MB (3,743,744 bytes)
created 29 September 2004 12:47:36
I already had .Net installed plus its update, am up todate with everything off Windows update site. But dont really understand this managed Directx, just remember seeing the message about Directx when installing Julius Caesar and saying to myself ive got Directx9.0c, so not sure if i clicked on install or not, i probably did'nt seeing as game did'nt run. All seems to be running fine now and have uninstalled game and reinstalled game a couple of times since just to make sure its ok.
Forgot to say, yes there are 2 .msi files in /redist sub folder, the baddie named mdxredist072004.msi and new one mentioned at top of message.
The Julius Caesar Game file v100bDR was 265MB (278,518,237 bytes) This was downloaded from www.findmyorder.com, not the original from online store which i have deleted.

Just as an afterthought im very impressed with the game guys [:)]
Thx for the quick responce with sorting out problems

offbase,
Let me try to understand your problem. You are saying that when you start the game, you get the "Launch Menu" that includes links to the manual, the game site, etc.? However, the "Play" selection is not enabled, so you can not start. Correct?
Have you tried to select "Quick Launch" from the program group? It should bypass that startup menu and just try to play the game. If you select that option but it still does not run, then there is an issue with the installation, which we should be able to address.
Thanks,
Deride

Offbase,
If it's the game menu where the Play link is not working, that likely indicates that you may have skipped the Managed DirectX installation. Please also go to the /redist sub-folder of your installation and double-click on mdxredist102004.msi to see if that helps.

RE: Julius Caesar wont run
Just reinstalled Julius Caesar again and noticed it does'nt give you a choice whether or not too update directx, if i click on cancel at this point it cancels the installation all together, did it again and clicked ok this time and it works fine-This version of Julius Caesar i downloaded from www.findmyorder.com this morning. Originally i downloaded Julius Caesar from Matrix Games Store also this morning, if i had choice of installing or not the directx update on Store version and clicked on cancel to not update directx but the game still installed but did'nt run does'nt this mean the Store version was different to the www.findmyorder version.
That was same as i got originally Erik, Launch Menu comes up ok, its when you hit the Play button that you get that error message as stated in my first message above.

RE: Julius Caesar wont run
Hi,
Eric & Deride, appreciate the quick responses. I won't have access to that machine for several hours. For now, Deride, you hit my problem right on the head! Yes, I've tried quicklaunch, but it claims to be unable to find the file. This is extremely perplexing. I'm not running anything else, other than the normal resident state of Norton, which is always running in the background. I'll try and forward my diagnostic file tonight, but it didn't show any problems anywhere, all the tests ran just fine. I'm wondering if perhaps the initial uninstall left some bad files, and reinstalling into the same directory maybe didn't write the replacements over them? (It did, however, state that the uninstall was successful, but who knows?) It being about 1:30 in the afternoon right now, I'll try to get this stuff done tonight. Again, I appreciate all the quick offers of help.

RE: Julius Caesar wont run
Just one last though, offbase. When you try tonight, make sure that you manually double-click that MSI exe to install Managed DirectX.
Also, check to see if there is a log file under the "Log" subdirectory where you installed the game. If there is one, please send that as well as a DxDiag file to support@matrixgames.com. If there is no log file, that means that the game has never succesfully started up (since it creates the log right off the bat.)

Please make sure you disable Norton, uninstall and then reinstall. Norton is the source of more weird installation issues than I can even count. It may not be the problem here, but it's worth a try. The fact that the shortcut can't find the exe is a sure sign of a bad installation.

Hi Gents,
Sorry to take so long, couldn't get at it 'til last night. I tried one last full uninstall and reinstall, and it now works fine (except for the mouse prob, but I guess I'll just have to get used to that). Thanks again for the help!
