question before i buy

Gary Grigsby's World At War gives you the chance to really run a world war. History is yours to write and things may turn out differently. The Western Allies may be conquered by Germany, or Japan may defeat China. With you at the controls, leading the fates of nations and alliances. Take command in this dynamic turn-based game and test strategies that long-past generals and world leaders could only dream of. Now anything is possible in this new strategic offering from Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games.

Tomster;

How immersive is World at War....? In a nutshell, get the divorce papers now! [;)]

If you are a fan of "thought provoking" and "immersive" wargaming, you can do no better than GGWAW! It is a revolutionary (or evolutionary as the case may be) game that bestows new life and energy into a long jaded genre of "TURN-based" strategic wargaming. It is a spectacular game!

If you dont have the $39, find it. If you have the money, buy a copy. If you have more, buy two copies. If you are a salesman, convince your friends to buy copies.

All in all....if you are a gamer or a history buff, take your pick, you will love this game!

Hope that helps!

If you enjoyed "Alpha Centauri," I think you'll like this too. Like Alpha Centauri, this is turn-based. Like Alpha Centauri, the emphasis is on strategy. Like Alpha Centauri, tech plays a big role. Like Alpha Centauri, your units are simple and easy to understand: infantry, armor, artillery, fighters, bombers, carriers, subs, heavy fleets, etc. I'm not sure if GGWaW is more complex than Alpha Centauri was; I don't recall much of manual in that game, whereas this game ships with both a tutorial and a nice manual.

As for HOI2, I found GGWaW much easier to get into than HOI2. If you play through the included tutorials, which are nice and quick, you can jump right in and play the game. Yeah, at some point you'll probably want to look at the manual, but you can start playing right away. If you begin with the basic (as opposed to Advanced) supply rules, you'll be up and running in no time.

Heck!!! That was easy. And they didn't even mention the PBEM aspects....a glaring omission, but inconsequential when your as easy as Tomster.

Yup, the best part is that it is "fairly" short (3month turns from '40 to '46) and thus can be played very well as a PBEM game while still providing enough depth/choice to make it interesting.
