Computer skill deficient - How to take screenshots!

Post by ratprince »

Any of you computer gurus out there want to teach an old jaded teacher how to take a screenshot and then find it to be able to post?

Would appreciate any brain-help!

Hi Mike:

1) press print screen
2) Alt-tab
3) open paint program
4) click edit/paste
5) click file/save

I think you got it from there.

One further suggestion: consider cropping your screenshots. For starters, try to crop them so that they are no more than 800 pixels wide. If they're wider than that, they mess up the threads in these forums for people viewing in 800x600 or less. Second, cropping sometimes highlights your AAR better, by drawing attention to the area of the map you're talking about. Finally, bear in mind that cropping maintains image quality; "reducing" or "shrinking" the image to make the whole thing smaller will somewhat degrade image quality.

Enjoy!

Not trying to sound nasty or anything, but how many users do you think view things in 800x600 or less? Maybe 1 in 10; or more likely, 1 in 20?

I do think screenshots should be cropped, if for nothing else than to save space. But if anyone is viewing in 800x600 or less, they need a new computer. Now, as regards having weak eyesight, that's another matter altogether.

Is there a free software that can crop? I'm using a very early Paintshop Pro version which is now freeware but cropping function is missing or disabled or something. So only shrink is available but it messes up the picture quality. I want to make an AAR of a game sometime but the pictures will be hard to see.

Alan, why are upset about people using 800x600? That's the setting I use except for games that don't allow it. It looks much nicer.

Pepper is stored in kegs at peppermills which rodents find nice to bed in at night. Pepper therefore is estimated to contain between 0.01 and 0.03% rodent dung in it which ends up being ground along with the rest of the goods.

Erm, on two of my three PCs, I run in 800 x 600. In fact, my office PC is set to 640 x 480, which drives me nuts, but the IS people don't let me increase it. [8|]

Edit: And yes, I actually prefer the look of 800x600. I can run much higher with my rig (P4/3G, ATI 9800 Pro 128), but higher resolutions just make icons look smaller to me.

It isn't that I'm upset about people using 800x600, it's just that I don't think many use it.

If you like 800x600, that's okay by me. I just don't think 800x600 looks nicer; 1024x768 looks much crisper to me. My Flat Panel only goes to 1280x1024 and I even perfer that, sometimes.

On top of looking better, the higher resolutions allow you to see more of whatever you want to see.

That's just my own feeble opinion. What anyone else prefers, that's certainly up to them. :)

Seeing that we've gone OT here (it being my own fault), let me chime in with--

Great game-- GGWaW!

Alan, the reason I like 800x600 is cause its bigger and less glaring. This rodent's eyes are not so good so must take care of what's left. But for sure some games like Matrix games do look good in the higher res. I'm also trying Pocket Korsun campaign a little. It's a real nice game too.

I use 800x600 viewing also. So, it's probably more popular than you think.
