Hehe, I'm fighting against him in northern australia too in our 3vs3 PBEM. But he landed in the beginning of january 42 and the aussies have a lot less to play with than you do. However something tells me that the japs are not making an all out effort in australia, with luzon and singapore still not taken.

Btw.. wheres my turn? [:D]

It's a possibility. The best place to invade in Australia if most troops of the island are there is to go round Perth (with CV support, of course) and invade Melbourne, Sidney and so on... You can will 5000 points of base value here before Allied units return from Darwin.
String, if you read this, this is not the Japanese plan in our PBEM. As you said, we will rather seize DEI and PI before heading to SW Australia.

Another possibilty is that your opponent wasn't excepting to find 100 000 men in this area when he landed and with reinforcements coming he doesn't want to engage in a position war that he can't win. In this case other parts of Australia are probably safe, because you need a lot of fuel to move to another place than NE Australia.

A possible new plan may be to load back troops and sail towards PM and Cooktown, Cairns to land here, not too far from Japanese base in NG.

OK this turn Sveint cleans out two of my small blocking forces east and West

He has 20,000 going east and 200,000 going West.

But In a march that will go down in the annals of warfare with commendations handed out by the bucketload to the engineers of the railroad the 1st Reinforcements have arrived at the rail junction.

I have won the race to the junction I have 1st USMC Div in situ and they are resting after the mad dash north.

Lavarack has also arrived and taken over responsability of the front.

I am intending to detach the 2 Cavalry Divisons, the PI Cavarly Regt, 3rd Aus Divison and all CD and heavy art to retake Darwin.

Forces will be given 2 days rest and then move out.

My biggest concern is that Derby is taken before I can bring pressure to bear form the East

Ouch 250,000 in the Westward thrust. I only have 40,000 to stop him I may need to get the hell out of dodge !!!

2nd (ABDA) Corps may have to withdraw abandoning Derby and its 300,000 supplies.

They will try to stand 120 miles east of Derby if they lose I will not try to stand at Derby but will withdraw to Perth.

Roosevelt's 4th (USAFFE) Corps will head north to retake Darwin in next few days (I wish I had not abandoned it now)

Lavarack will start to push East under direct command of his 1st Army HQ with 3 Divisions plus armour once his troops have rested from the epic march north. (Primarily Cav Divisons)

All of my troops are starting to suffer from Supply shortage given the length of my my supply line.

This is gpoing to be operation shoestring and I am not convinced 7 Divisions can be maintained without Darwin the rail line is not good enough therefore 4 Divisons (Primarily Aus Inf Divs) will push north to retake Darwin.

OK in a change of policy sveint and I are abandoning our joint AAR and I will now post everything in this thread which sveint will not look at.

I will post global screenies tonight but overall.

India is where my fighting power is and the Japanese are in Australia ...duh !!

Been few turns since I posted but more or less nothing has happened except.

1. A small surface action TF got a kicking from Betties off of Broome
2. ABDA Corps was defeated and retreeated by the Japanese heading West 120 miles east of Derby. Derby has lvl 9 forts but is probably undefendable in the long term
3. Roosevelt is closing on Darwin and Lavarack has began his march on Wyndham

ps look at all those heavies I have in India tis a crying shame they should be in Oz

Still looking ok though I am starting to wonder where the IJA are gettign all these men.

Do they really have the strength to deploy 300 - 350k men to Australia have 250k plus in India on the trails and have the garrisons they seem to have in Cent Pac.

Somethjing weird is going on here

He keeps pounding me at Darwin from the air.

I seem to have exhausted my Army both Darwin and Lavarack are knackered he has 70k plus at Darwin where the hell is he getting all these men.

I am trying a shock arttack if it fails Ill withdraw as I dont think I can take it from 70,000 men backed by the inevitable bombardment TF's.

He tries a para drop on alice springs but the base was defended.

I am going to take a long hard look at China he must be drawing on either the HI / Manchguria or China for men if he has 400k plus in Aus thats a hell of a lot of men.

Quiet turn my shock attack at Darwin was a miserable failure. I am withdrawing back to the rail junction but will probably need to withdraw further.

Supplies are becoming a real problem this far up the rail line I am consolidating to rest.

This gives time for Sveint to reorganise but in a very short space of time my ground units shot thier bolt and require rest and recuperation.

Derby also fell this turn with 250k supplies my army got out in time so was not retreated but my Eastern Army is in no shape to resist either.

I look back on the last few turns and my deciusion to abandon Darwin has been decisive.

Had I fought there I could have probably held until relieved given how fast my reinforcements moved. But I didnt realise they would move that quickly and so I abandoned the place to avoid getting cut off.

This has proven a big mistake.

Supplies are going to be a major problem in Australia

More bombing raids on Roosevelts retreating Corps.

Got to make a decision whether to pull Lavarack back or try and hold.

Not sure what to do.

Bombardment run at Prot Moresby this turn may indicate an intention to jump down the east coast.

I am moving my CV gp from Perth to Sydney to provide covder to either flank.

Two day update

AS Columbia fleeing Derby takes a pasting from Subs more air on Roosevelts retreating troops.

Lavarack may have to withdraw towards railhead I am really struggling with supplies at the end of the long rail line especially with attriting air raids from IJA bombers

All that lovely allied air that I had positioned for an attack on India starts to work on the 200,000 IJA troops moving over the burmese trails.

If I am struggling for supplies over a rail line how in the blazes does sveint expect to maintain an army of 200k over the trails of northern burma

A recon commando raid on Port Moresby this turn that looks worrying.

RE: 1st September 1942

Post by Andy Mac »

Another 2 dayer

More of the same allied airpower form India pounds and pounds

IJA airpower pounds roosevelt. Supply status getting critical fighting this far from my supply depotds is getting tough.

May have to withdraw at least out of range of aircover and try to bring him out into outback.

Looks like he is pursuing towards Perth. My ABDA corps has left blocking forces to delay IJA advance and make a few Sherman Hairpins while the rest scuttles off to Perth to reorganise.

2nd Aus Division is digging in at the rail junction north of Perth.

Andy

RE: 1st September 1942

Post by Andy Mac »

ok a few turns in one go this time.

Not much happening a lil fight going on at one of the bases off the coast of NG

More Air doing Air to Mud.

Despite a massive response to Northern Australia I have been comprehensively beaten by Sveint in this campaign.

My main mistake was abandoning the defences at Darwin.

Despite the Bombardments I gavce up lvl 9 forts there to concentrate on the junction because I was sure Lavarack couldnt get there in time.

Had I left the garrison alone we would be looking at a very different scenario now.

I need to review my plans and decide what next.

India is impregnable but cannot really go on the offensive until mid 43 at the earliest unless I commit Aus/US forces to that theatre.

Aus Command and SW Pac are going to have their hands full in Oz and PM.

SOPAC perhaps will be my offensive arm. I am looking at an offensive towards the Solomons for October/November also looking at a strike on Tarawa.

Andy

I'm coming in to this thread late, but I notice you said sveint captured Darwin "intact", and that you'd have to deal with the level 9 forts later. I thought whenever you capture a base, you destroy all the forts. Not the case?
