Ooh, yes - just noticed what appears to be the rotary engine (definitely not in-line, anyway) so it's not Se5a.

Plus, I'm almost certain, the Se5a was never flown off a carrier (though I'm VERY willing to be corrected on this). The Sopwith Pup was...

It is a Pup, but modified for "carrier" operations. The Lewis gun on the top wing and the struts near the fuselage are not the standard equipment for the ones flown on land. As for the ship I'll go with one of Australian cruisers HMAS Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Australia. Not sure on the boat.

I'm going to stick with my guess of HMS Vindictive. The photo was taken at Rosyth, Scotland, so it's not that likely that the ship is Australian (I think).
