Kuniworth vs TDV campaign reports

Post by Kuniworth »

Turn 1 6/22/41

Regular opening with some modifications. As usual I try to force the opponent to surrender as much material and men as usual. In this turn 255 000 men with 1494 guns and 2454 tanks was lost due to surrender. Around Lvov 2 soviet mech corps is now sourrounded, waiting to be destroyed. Russian airforce loses 7000 aircrafts and should be no further threat in the near future.

Soviet losses

10928 squads
3290 tanks
3760 guns
7098 airplanes

The offensive continues all along the front. Massive success as the russians surrenders in droves and units are shattered. Most of the soviet frontal defence seems to be falling apart and the russian airforce is gone.

Hoths forces punish russian resistance and captures 26 540 men with 164 guns and 706 tanks. Guderians forces pushes Zhukov back to cut off even more russian units. Volkov front is shattered.

Near the carpathians a russian army surrenders with 41 000 men and 252 guns.

A surrounded pz-corps is relived as other panzers shows up to help in the advance on Zhitomir. Dangerous forces in the pripet-marsches may cause some trouble.

Turn 4

The attack continues and no time is given allowing the enemy to rest. A lot of new soviet armies have been spotted and it seems they are forming a new defense-line outside Smolensk and down to Kiev.

NORTH;
The panzer now strikes against Pskov. Heavy fighting within the city and a shock army is thrown out. From south, north-west of Daugavpils another panzer-corps rushes north to cut the russian front in two. Many russian units are surely now out of supply just outside Riga. Further south two panzercorps helps the 9th and 16th army in their effort to surround Daugapilvs. The city falls and an army containing 3750 men surrenders. At least two other russian armies are also caught in the pocket.

Near Riga 15910 men surrenders as the infantry is mopping up.

CENTER;
A panzerthrust by Guderian smashes Zhukov defence and captures Mogilev. 1st Shock army falls back with 19840 dead and 212 guns destroyed.

In the center 19700 men with 64 guns marches in to captivity this turn.

SOUTH;
A panzer-corp was last turn surrounded in Uman. Forces from Odessa region now strikes north opening the supply lines and then connects with units of 1st panzer army outside Kiev. The result is that the whole soviet southern wing is effectively cut off. It´s not clear how many units that are out of supply. An attack against Kiev was rejected by 5th shock army although Vasilevskii defended poorly. The enemy is preparing a second line of defence along the railroad just outside Kiev down to the black sea.

Rumanian and german infantry captures a total of 75 000 men with 350 guns.

Total soviet losses

26984 squads
5484 afv

Turn 5

My dear opponent Tdv from Canada will not post any messages due to bad english. So all folks out there have to do with me.

More success this turn. But russian resistance stiffens, dangerous shock armies is showing up on diffrent parts of the front. German infantry is this turn closer to the german panzer then before which is satisfying.

FINISH FRONT;
Everything calm for second consecutive turn now. The finns are outside Leningrad and not much have happened here since the start. In the beginning a russian army tried to cut supply lines but was isolated and surrendered with 55 000 men. otherwise calm and quiet here.

NORTH FRONT;
The capture of railroad Daugavpils-Pskov conquers all territory west of the cities. The two pockets around Riga and Daugavpils becomes one and 15 000 russians and 72 guns is taken. 18th army crosses the border of Estonia and forces Timoshenko to retreat. 17 980 men surrender when the german infantry surrounds it.

Near Pskov the panzers attack the strong 2nd(?)shock army, forcing it to retreat eastward. Meanwhile panzers from the south strikes north cuting of 5 russian armies. The territory gained by this action is terrific. A setback however when the railroad junction 4 hexes west of Demyansk was´nt captured.

CENTER;
Massive armour attacks from the area around Mogilev. Luftwaffe pounds Eremenkos and Zhukovs forces merciless. The panzers crosses the dniepr and easily slices through the russian defense. The breachhead widens and Smolensk is captured when the 77th russian army shatters!!! Some other of the russian armies also shatters by the panzerthrust while 40 000 surrenders. The red army still holds Vitebsk and Gomel.

SOUTH;
Desperate to aid the armies cut off last turn russian attacks were made against the panzer spearheads. Attack failed and the pocket remains. However further north Zhitomir was recaptured by the red army.

Still in supply the forward elements continue forward to secure the pocket. But a bigger oppurtunity is showing to cut off even more of the russian first front line near Uman creating another one. The panzers are therefore thrown at the russian second line of defence(running along the railroad) breaking it to pieces and strenghtening the german hold around the pocket. In the pocket 45 000 russians surrender with over 200 guns and 200 tanks. In the new pocket near Odessa 5 armies are now awaiting destruction.

In the north the armies around Zhitomir is effectively cut off and 27th and 44th russian armies surrender 25 000 men and 145 guns. In Zhitomir another 13830 men with 84 guns is taken prisoners.

Attacks are made against the 5th shock army in Kiev. Vasilevskiis troops unfortunately refuses to retreat.

Total soviet losses after 1 month of fighting;

31845 squads
6462 tanks
11196 guns
7673 aircraft

German losses;

1386 squads
425 tanks
122 guns
345 aircraft

Turn 6

Last turn the soviets re-took both Pskov and Mogilev. And almost closed the breachhead around Smolensk. This turn the german advance continued but some of the fiercest battles of the campaign so far was fought in the center.

NORTH;
Infantry is now in place and pushes the russians out of Pskov(once and for all I hope). Panzer units attacks the 2nd shock army forcing it to retreat with heavy losses. In Estonia the capital Talinn falls and the baltic states are now in german hands with the exception of the area near Narva. In this turn 15 000 russians surrender, mostly due to the infantry mopping up Daugavpils-pocket.

CENTER;
An all out attack are made to widen the dniepr-breachhead and support the panzers near Smolensk. The infantry crosses the river sweeping the russians before them, shattering 4 armies. Mogilev falls again and 13830 russians surrender. Demyansk railroadjunction still in russian hands.

A nasty surprise though when 39th pz army tries to cross Dvina and capture Vitebsk. The soviet 3rd shock army resists and heavy KV:s inflicts shocking losses to Hoths troops. 84 AFV are lost while the russians only loses 24. They´re learning.

SOUTH;
Kiev falls! The infantry mops up the pockets and units of the second defenseline is surrounded. 5th shock army is shattered and in total the russians loses 75 000 men due to surrender with 620 guns and 518 tanks!

The soviet southern wing is under heavy pressure. Can the the recent losses be replaced?

Turn 7 - war winning battles?

last soviet turn;
last russian move saw the closing of smolensk pocket and brutal hammering of the 3 pz korps within. The 46th pz korp in Smolensk, containing the Das Reich, Grossdeutschland and 10th panzer division have taken horrible battering for the last 2 weeks. Combat value for that korps is cv 7:6(!) and a lot of AFV must have been lost. Amazingly it still managed to hold on to Smolensk.

The russians have despite extreme losses been able to restore a front line massing troops south of Leningrad, around Vitebsk and 6-7 hexes east of Kiev. Well done tbv! At the beginning of the german turn the front runs from Narva-Pskov-Velikiye Luki-Smolensk-Gomel-Kiev-river dniepr.

NORTH;
The forces of 4th pz and 16th army assembled around Pskov strikes north along Lake peipus and near Novogorod. Reaching Finish bay the panzers connects trapping a lot of russian armies. The most however are skeleton formations. At the same time 18th army pushes east clearing Estonia and crossing the river near Narva. Soviet losses are medium, a lot of empty armies shatters but almost no troops surrender. A panzer korps is now just outside Leningrad. But shock-armies are outside the city. Defence of city itself has a estimated cv of 1.

Demyansk railroad-junction in german hands.

CENTER;
My anxiety is over as all of the infantry crosses the dniepr aiding the suffering panzers in and south of Smolensk. Gomel falls easily. The battles around Mogilev-Gomel-Smolensk cost the russians 117 000 men with 600 guns and 600 tanks due to surrender!!!

Panzers north of Vitebsk strikes south encircling the slavik hords assembled around the city. Thereafter the infantry of 9th army strikes, shattering weak units and takes Vitebsk while 3rd shock army surrenders with 53210 men, 373 guns and 340 AFV!

Further north Velikiye Luki is captured. The fighting around here is not very intense.

SOUTH;
The southern pocket is cleared shattering units and capturing 27 660 men. All of the Ukraine west of the river dniepr are now under control. Panzers just outside Dnepropetrovsk. Volga-Front near Stalingrad is bombed by italian long-range aircraft destroying 400 airplanes.

14th pz Korps containing Italian torino motorized-division drives down the crimean penninsula cutting the railroad. 60 kilometers away from Sevastopol.

East of Kiev 1st pz army slashes weak russian defense capturing Poltava. It was at Poltava the swedish king Charles XII was defeated the 28th of June 1709 so beeing a swede I´m overjoyed of this revenge! A couple of russian units are surrounded against the Dniepr and shatters.

The russian forces in the south have taken massive battering. The german success here are unmatch on any other front. My opponent did a good job reestablishing the front last turn. Will he try it again or retreat eastward? How many more divisions can the red army field here?

Hey! Kuniworth 9000 squads and more of 2000 tanks in a turn <img src="eek.gif" border="0"> Good strike!!!

The russians can not effort this level of casualties by early August. Maybe a "give ground" strategy is required to minimize losses and wait for better times.

Yeah I believe your right Josan, we will see. I´ve been very lucky in the center, the Smolensk-attack was launched to early and could have unfolded to a total disaster.

Hm it´s a pity Tbv won´t post any comments because of his bad english. He is new to pbem-games but gets better every turn. And did you notice that much of the red airforce have not yet been wiped out? So everything might still happen.

So far I think my greatest success has been in the south. The ukraine is a slaughterhouse, sooner or later the russians must take a long step back.

CENTER;
From starting point Smolensk one panzer-attack reaches the suburbs of Vyazma and the other captures Bryansk. 92 000 russians surrender with 257 tanks. How many russians remain in front of Moscow? As soon as the infantry of 4th army catches up - the attack against the capitol will commence.

Slow advance near Velikiye Luki.

Turn 9

The wounded red army is like a boxer hit to the head that refuses to go down. The german army is getting exhausted.

Russian counterattacks are very few. The red army is concentrating on the defence of Moscow. The red airforce is still beeing hold back.

NORTH;
The panzers and the infantry is continue to push east through awful terrain. Novgorod falls and the wehrmacht is close to Tikhvin. 5th russian army surrenders with 2100 soldiers. 16th army just outside Demyansk.

CENTER;
An attack are made against Moscows first line of defence. The panzer-korps around Vyazma captures the city and then swings north to meet more panzers turning south outside Rhzev. 5(?) russian armies are cut of and some of them shatters. The rest are now surrounded. Further south the first assault against Orel fails.

A total of 20 000 men with 41 guns and 200 AFV surrenders in the center.

SOUTH;
The panzers around Kharkov strikes south behind a russian defence on the railroad running down to denpropetrovsk. The infantry follows up shattering some weak armies and surrounding the russian 26th, 57th and 80th armies in and near the city.

35 100 russians with 166 guns and 78 AFV surrenders 100 miles southeast of kiev.

The crimean is almost overrun. The italian torino division are one hex away from Sevastopol. Rumanian forces and a pz korps is rushing to ai

The russian casualties this turn was just around 2000 squads. The front line now runs from Tikhvin,Novgorod, Demyansk, Rhzev, Vyazma, Bryansk, Orel, Kursk, Kharkov, 3 hexes west of Stalino.

Turn 10 - the russian center begins to crumble and the german army shows sign of fatigue.

last russian turn; Poorly defended Bryansk falls and more forces entrench outside Moscow.

NORTH;
some pockets are cleared and Tikhvin is captured. Not much happens here as the fall of Leningrad ended almost all fighting. The red army is withdrawing towards Moscow and the wehrmacht consolidate it´s positions. The northern campaign draws to a close.

CENTER;
The pocket created last turn is annihilated. 20 000 russians with 350 guns and 150 tanks surrenders. The Luftwaffe on interdiction-missions suddenly finds itself fighting for life against large trained fighter-groups of the red airforce. Panic in Army group center forces the stop of interdiction and massive airfield attacks, resulting in heavy losses on both side. But at the end of the day the luftwaffe commands the sky.

Ond the ground an attempt is made to copy the last turns manevouer cutting of a new bit of the massed hords. The attack partially succeeds but the pocket could´nt be closed by Zeitzlers 9th army. Thereby the 5th shock army in Rhzev can avoid capture and retreat to northeast, when Reinhardt capture this vital city. Guderian and Reinhardt panzer-corps fights it out with Vasilevskii and Stalins forces resulting in even losses. The enemy retreats though and some units are shattered. All armoured forces are poised to strike against Moscow and the russian center is crumbeling due to pressure.

On the central wings Demyansk and Orel falls. Bryansk is retaken. In these operations 33 000 men with 250 guns and 160 tanks are captured.

SOUTH;
After the intense fighting
Panzers racing forward captures Stalino and Kursk. Panzers 40 miles away from Rostov.

Though completely surrounded the garrisons of Denpropetrovsk and Zaporache refuses to give up. New assaults by rumanian forces fails with the result that the railroad leading down to the crimean can´t be converted. In the crimean, Torino motorized division possibly captures Sevastopol(without a fight?) and the whole penninsula is conquered.

This turn 50 000 men surrenders with 200 guns and 310 AFV. Fighting however is getting less intense. The red army have no continues front here.

2 month after the start of Operation Barbarossa russian losses are staggering, german forces have successfully wounded the enemy. But can the initial success be followed up with a decisive victory before winter?

soviet losses

this turn/ overall

VICTORY!!!

Ippolet givs up the game and all hostilities ends on the eastern front.

In all a good game for me, 13 turns are very good I think.

Analysis of the game;
Inexperienced russian player lacked knowledge of how to delay the german offensive and create effective defence. Leningrad and Moscow captured easily, the ukraine overrun in normal time.

I was lucky on several occasions. Especially with the Smolensk-debacle, where I was overoptimistic. However play in the south was great and I´m most proud of the panzerstrike from Uman that cut of the whole russian front(turn 4-5?).

We will play a new game with me as the russians. That´ll be a new experience, never played that side in PBEM.

Over and out.

Kuniworth,

Can you tell us more about your first turn? I know you've said in previous posts that you do shallow penetrations w/the panzers focusing on encircling as many forces as possible. Do you focus much on rail conversion? I seems to me that rail conversion would be important for an early german vicory. Do your panzers venture far from your supply lines during the early turns? I have tried to replicate the losses against the Russian ai that you achieved in this game and have been unable to do so.
