WIR - Windows - HELP

Post by m200 »

Hello

I used to run WIR in pure DOS and it works OK. But I wanted to run it in Windows (and in a window) because I'd like to be able to use WIR Assistant and the options it provides. In fact I can run WIR in Windows, but I can't do it in a window. No matter what I do, the game won't run in a window. The game will only run in the full-screen DOS mode. I had a look at the screenshots at the WIR site (see http://www.matrixgames.com/Games/warinrussia/screenshots.asp ), and they all show the game running in a window. So it seems that it's possible.
Maybe someone knows what to do to run the game in a window. I've got Windows 98.

The first screenshot shows its running Windows ME. This may be a feature or trick of WinME that I don't know about since I have 98 like you, or Matrix may be using some kind of Windows based screensaver that can grab a standard EGA/VGA graphics screen thats running in the foreground and save it. Under 95 and 98, old DOS programs that take control of the screen and change graphics modes can't be run in a window, period. This has been my understanding for years. We can rule out one thing here with just a little help: can any of you WinME users do this?

David? Paul? How did you get those screenshots?

Belay my last post. I know what they did. Run WIR normally in fullscreen mode. Now use Alt-Tab to get back to Windows. Go to the bar along the bottom and find the box for the currently running WIR. Right click on that box, click on Properties, then Screen. On the Screen display change Full-screen to window then OK. Voila! You can see WIR in a window in Windows! Bad news: you can't *PLAY* it in that window in Windows. <img src="frown.gif" border="0"> There is probably a box that popped up in addition to the WIR window, and it tells you you can't play the game until you switch back to fullscreen mode. So Matrix used this trick to get WIR in windows then saved the window as a screenshot, but sadly, as I said earlier, any DOS game that changes graphics mode can't be run in a window in Windows. Sorry.
