yes, the more play time the better. some people have suggested though your first country to play be china. they don't have a lot of production, but it gives you a chance to watch all the other countries being played by the AI.

I think my first game was as germany also and I got absolutely crushed by russia. just expect it if you try germany as your first country.

It's a start! Like aletoledo said, play with Fog of War off and watch the AI closely. It doesn't do a bad job, all things considered. Also don't use Advanced Supply for a couple games. It's a great way to play, but does make life more difficult the first few times.
Next play Germany with you controlling production. That way you get a feel for the whole game.
Be sure to play the WA before too long, since then you get to watch the GermanyAI in action, and figure out how to handle an expansive empire :)

China is confusing sometimes, because of its weird production rules. Also, you don't do much other than look at Japan. I'd say play as China to watch AI Germany and Japan do their moves. Gives you an idea of what works, what doesn't

After that, I say dive right in, with Germany. A little steep, but you're in the driver's seat right from the start, instead of just clicking next turn.

I'd advise to try Russia (after China as an extended tutorial) rather than Germany. Russia allows you to focus on land and some air warfare without distractions on/under the waters.

The overal strategy is simpler as well: first blunt the German assault, then straight for Berlin!

Germany faces a strategic juggling act between the Uboat war in the Atlantic, tug-o-war in the Med and a slugfest in the East.
Good fun - but not if you're stil mastering the rules.

Just my two pence.

Well since everyone is throwing in 2 cents or so here is mine.

Haveing played many War games I went straight to my standard test, playing the allies after reading the rules and then refering back to them. This way I could watch what was happening and try out some somethings with regard to air/naval/land units. You have more rules to cover with naval and transports, but it was fun, not successful but fun. Then I added in production and then straight to PBEM, did ok as my opponent was just learning as well.

As others mentioned watch the AI in non Fog of War as you will learn allot from that on how the machanics work. Also refer to the production screens to see what the AI is building for you so you see how that works. From there add in production when you feel comfortable. I suggest a couple of rounds with each country you want to play so you can learn from your mistakes and or try different ways of doing things. Once you have the mechanics down add in advanced supply, this makes a world of difference to how you play. Do not get to comfortable in your thinking with basic supply cause half of what you want to do will no longer be possible as rail capacity/transports will be used moving supply to your units and not available for more unit movement.[:-] This one stopped me dead in my tracks until I figured it out.

As MarcelJV said.
play each of the major sides...twice.
play the game with advanced supply perhaps several times
to see impact.

I have yet to play a full game with advanced supply.
I tend to be leery of such rules as it trips you up and detracts
from just gaming.

I love advanced supply! :P
But I found that Auto Supply moved your trucks around without permission, often to annoying or dangerous places! So now I move them myself. It just takes a second! While it can be annoying, it sure makes you appreciate how the Generals felt back then! Especially on the Russian front (for both sides!).
