What to buy...

Post by Skie »

I enjoy tactical and strategy games both real-time and turn-based. And, Rome:TW isn't cutting it for me anymore. I was going to reinstall Korsun Pocket, but I can't find my CD anywhere (the woes of moving and losing things).

To the meat of things, I'm looking to spend $60 or less on a game or two and would like some help. I want something that'll have some longevity. Here are a few of the games I've been thinking of picking up, which do you feel is the "must have" of them.

Battles In Normandy
GG: World at War
Highway to the Reich
Tin Soldiers: Alexander the Great & Tin Soldiers: Julius Caesar
War In The Pacific (A bit more than I'd like to spend.)
Heart of Iron II

I can heartily recommend War in the Pacific, but if that's more than you want to spend... The only other game on your list that I've played is Hearts of Iron II, and speaking as someone who spent a lot of time playing Hearts of Iron I, I like the earlier game better. It's a matter of taste, though: A lot of people like HoI II a lot, and it's not a bad game at all.

GG:World at War. Easy to get into. Great legs. [;)]

If you liked Korsun Pocket, go for Battles in Normandy. If you fancy more 'real-time' then Highway to the Reich is a must especially as the AI is very very good.

Highway to the Reich

The real time King of Wargames
War In The Pacific

The last game you'll ever buy as you will no longer have time for anything else
GG: World at War

Something for people who have a life yet still want to play
Tin Soldiers: Alexander the Great & Tin Soldiers: Julius Caesar

Chess on steroids, fun and frustrating at the same time
Battles In Normandy

One day I'll have time to play this (but I have all the others too so ...)

If your time commitment is that of a normal person, I'd say GGWaW & HTTR fit the bill. Both are great and Both are something you can play in a reasonable period of time.

Highway to the Reich is THE classic out of all the games mentioned. The others are good to excellent but HTTR is the allround winner.

GGWAW and HTTR are my recommendations.

This is the best description of Tin Soldiers Alexander the Great I have heard.

There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand Binary, and those who don't.

Always got a kick out of that joke. Wonder how many people actually get it? [;)]

Actually, for it to be correct it should have a subscript 2 following the 10, since mathematically a base of 10 is implied for any number if no subscript is explicitly given...[:D]

BTW--if you ever find your KP CD, you can get the new patch so you won't need the CD anymore!

I'd have to agree with that, although I must confess I've never played WitP.

HTTR is a great game, its has a longer learning curve that traditional hex based wargames but is well worth the time spent.

look at the Combat Mission games at Battlefront.com
fun and challenging tactical games with lots of replay potential, and lots of fan created graphics mods and scenarios
CMAK or CMBB can be found quite cheap, the original member of the series CMBO has been seen for $10-$20
