I don't know because I haven't read the manual on this ubject yet, but they are pretty weak it seems. I was playing Japanese and one of my cruisers hiy MY OWN mines (type 93 i think) and it only caused 3 sys damage! lol! oh well, they seem to scare off the AI anyway...

personally, I think mines are modeled pretty well. I love that they degrade over time. That was my biggest complaint about UV. You could get thousands of mines into some ports and make them almost invincible. I think the effect is pretty good too. (I haven't seen air launched mines in action, so I don't know if they work well or not)
3 mines should sink a dd, though. But, with FOW maybe only 1 or 2 hit. It is possible for a DD to survive two mine hits. A US DD survived two mine hits when invading Tacloban. It's also possible it did sink and you just haven't had confirmation yet.

You can't trust the Allied replay. It consistantly reports false happenings.
The only way to be sure ILN ships are sunk is on the intelligence screen.
Your opponent should send all of his combat related files to you each turn.
This is so you can monitor the accuracy of your reports.

I know. I was looking for it in the intel screen (it was the Hayashio), and it hasn't turned up yet. Oh well, it happened at Cam Ranh Bay (Dutch sub laid field), so it didn't have that far to limp into a friendly port...

Level bombers can do it starting in 43, I think. I saw the option to use them when flying B-29's, but didn't try it out.
I don't ever use mines when I play vs the AI (it keeps the game a bit more competetive), so I haven't used them. I don't know if you need a big airfield, MLE, large port, or what to make them happen. Long ago I saw threads that said it wasn't working, but I also thought it was fixed in a prior patch.

It's working fine for me, aside from the "Invulnerable Japanese Destroyer" incident [:)] You need either a size 9 or 10 port to load them onto your ships or subs, or an MLE.
As an aside, I'm having trouble getting my ML's to mine friendly harbours. I can send a fully loaded Mine Warfare TF to a DH port that's threatened by the enemy, and it just sits there, mocking me...
Any tips?

I just looked in the 45 campaign and couldn't find how the B-29 could lay mines. Are you sure? How does it work?

It works like this: You select the City Attack mission for your bomber group, and on the Select Target screen, there's a button called "Mine Port". Then you select what port you want to mine. The whole group then lays mines; no attacks on anything else.

Any
heavuy bomber.. I think it is base at supply level x2, airfield size six for 17 24, lib-6, and 7 for 29 to lay mines.. no need to be a port..You need either a size 9 or 10 port to load them onto your ships or subs, or an MLE.

Are they under friendly air cover? Perhaps they dont like going into enemy controlled airspace?
RE: Mines
ok, check that the ships have mines, sounds silly but I have done this .. oops!
If mining the same port.. sometimes you have to leave the hex for one tur n then return. settingto do tot retire.. good luck

ML will not mine their own home port. Here is how to mine a friendly port:
1) check your MLs individually to make sure they have mines. Red "0s" do nothing.
2) set "retirement allowed"
3) select a home port other than the port you want to lay mines in
4) select as your DH the hex you wish to mine
Yes, it's nit-picky. Do you have to do it just so? Noo, of course not. Only if you want it to work.[;)]
edit: oops, had the wrong switch set. Use "retirement allowed."

RE: Mines
You caught me. ML will not lay mines set on "do not retire". Must use "retirement allowed"
You can do whatever fancy footwork you like, as long as the home port is not the DH

RE: Mines
Example:
In Hawaii, PH is the only port big enough to load mines. If I wanna mine PH, I will replenish TF there. The Home Port and Destination should both be PH. Now, undock under retirement allowed and set Lahaina as the Home port. The TF will mine PH and start moving to Lahaina. Turn the TF around the next turn and you have a two turn turn around on mining the port the TF is sitting in.
