TORA TORA TORA: SPOOKY(J) VS SPRUANCE(A)

Post by racndoc »

SCENARIO 15

HISTORICAL 1ST TURN ON
SUB DOCTRINE OFF
ALLIED DAMAGE CONTROL ON
DEC 7TH SURPRISE ON
REINFORCEMENTS + OR - 15 DAYS
PLAYER DEFINED UPGRADES ON
FOW ON
ADVANCED WEATHER ON

SPOOKY is very busy with his website and other WITP ongoing games so he probably wont be posting in this thread too often. If that is the case, I may make this more of a strategy and tactics thread.

The battle begins.............

SITUATION REPORT: 12-7-42 EVENING HAWAIIAN ISLANDS TIME

CINCPAC reads through a stack of reports covering todays disasters and setbacks stretching from Malaya to the central Pacific:

CENTPAC:

The Pacific Fleet is reeling at Pearl Harbor. No battleships have sunk yet but 2 are 99% and 96% damaged. Numerous DDs and cruisers are also badly damaged. The Hawaiian waters seem to be infested with Japanese subs...unconfirmed sightings are reported everywhere.

The Japanese occupy undefended Nauru and Tarawa and conduct amphibious assaults at Guam and Wake. The courageous Marines at Wake successfully resisted the 1st landing and hold on by a thread.

PHILIPPINE ISLANDS:

Japanese conducted invasions at San Marcelino, Lingayen, Vigan, Aparri,Laoag, Legaspi and Batan Island. MacArthur leaves the Far Eastern Air Force on the ground and it is virtually destroyed at the outset of war by a massive air raid at Clark Over 170 Allied aircraft are destroyed on the ground between Clark and Oahu.

No sign yet of Baby KB.

DEI:

Japanese assault troops wade ashore at Kuching, Miri, Brunei and Jesselton. The Japanese seem to be leaving a tempting target for PoW and Repulse led TF Z.....
the transports at Kuching are covered by a 7 ship surface TF with 3 cruisers.

CHINA:

Hong Kong is both bombed and assaulted by IJA forces.

Malaya:

Japanese invade in force at Khota Bharu and cover the invasion with 5 BBs and several CAs. They must be concerned about the possibility of intervention by TF Z. Curiously, no Japanese land based air flies from Indochina.....

ALLIED ORDERS :

1) The Japanese are really spread out by invading at so many locations. Allies will create surface raiders wherever possible to to attept naval interdiction.

2) Evacuate as much merchant shipping from the DEI and PI as possible.

3) Start transporting men and materiel out from west coast US and Karachi to Allied bases.

4) By leaving potential surface targets at Kuching and grounding all their air in Indochina, the Japanese appear to be setting a trap for Force Z with their Nells and Bettys. Force Z flees Singapore at full speed and does NOT try to engage enemy surface units.

5) Allied subs are sent after spotted IJN TFs everywhere...even in shallow water and coastal hexes.

6) All Allied bombers in Malaya, DEI and PI are orderred to launch naval attacks.

7) ASW groups are formed up in Hawaiian Islands to hunt down IJN subs.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-8-42

CENTPAC:

ASW TFs deployed around the Hawaiian Islands Sea Frontier are successful as 4 TFs make contact with IJN subs forcing them under. Finally SS I-23 is spotted east of Maui and is hit by 6 depth charges sinking almost immediately.

Wake Island and Guam both surrender today.

The Allied surface raider strategy is successful as CA Louisville intercepts an IJN TF at Nauru sinking DD Oite:

SITUATION REPORT: 12-8-42...CONTINUED

PI:

Japanese captured Laoag, Lingayen and Aparri today. 17,000 IJA attacked 4500 Allied troops at San Marcelino but were held off with the IJA suffering 252 casualties to 120 Allied. The Japanese air force again pounds airfield at Clark.

Allied subs were effective. SS S-41 put a torpedo in an AK off San Marcelino.
SS S-39 put a fish in an AK at Legaspi.

The 93rd BS again proved to be the most effective Allied bomber squadron as they scored hits on CL Nagara and an AK at Legaspi.

Malaya:

Japanese conduct their 1st probing attack at Khota Bharu losing 57 troops to 3 Allied.

SEAC bombers again are almost totally inept but a Vildabeest scores a torpedo hit on CA Suzuya at Khota Bharu.

Japanese naval bombers attempt to intercept British shipping fleeing Singapore and 17 Nells land a torpedo on DD Isis. The Japanese commander(Spooky) later sends the Allies a private communique questioning the whereabouts of PoW and Repulse.

DEI:

Japanese capture Kuching, Brunei and Jesselton. Allied subs are again effective.
SS-020 sinks AP Giyu Maru at Miri.
SS-019 sinks AP Midori Maru at Kuching.
SS KXV hits an AP with 8 shells and 2 torpedoes at Brunei.

Good luck to both of you!

Interesting, I tried taking Kuching early and staging bombers there in my PBEM against Cap & Gown, but they never found any targets. In fact, Cap bombed Kuching daily, forcing me to move the bombers elsewhere.

Grotius....thanx for your comments. Hopefully my bombers will perform as well as Cap's did!

SITUATION REPORT: 12-9-42

CENTPAC:

The ships and base at Pearl Harbor start the long process of repairing themselves. Air groups are rebuilding and effective Search and ASW plane patrols are again airborne.

The ASW campaign continues as a squadron of DDs hits SS-I25 with 4 depth charges causing a massive explosion and an oil slick NE of Maui.

Malaya:

Inept SEAC bombers mostly miss their naval targets save for a Vildabeest putting a torpedo in an AK off Khota Bharu.

40,500 IJA at Khota Bharu attack 7100 Allied defenders and suffer 606 casualties vs 67 Allied....maybe this base can hold out for another day or two at most.

CHINA:

33,000 IJA attack 13,000 defenders at Hong Kong and lose 115 troops vs 91 Allied.

DEI:

Japan captures Miri as one of their previously damaged APs sinks offshore.

Dutch Martin 139s score their 1st hit of the war on CL Kashi leaving it on fire off Brunei.

PI:

Japan captures Vigan.

18,000 IJA attack 4400 defenders at San Marcelino but are held off and lose 126 men vs 105 Allied.

Baby KB shows up east of Samar and attacks Allied shipping fleeing the PI. One AK sinks right away and another is left on fire and adrift after taking 2 torpedoes.

93rd BS receives the 1st unit citation of the war as the B-17s score hits on Japanese shipping for the 2nd day in a row. In the AM they hit an AP off Lingayen with a 500lb bomb and in the PM they audaciously attack Baby KB. 3 B-17C escorted by 12 P-40E strike CV TF with CAP of 18 Claudes. No planes were lost and no hits were scored but Baby KB has now been definitely located.

5 USN subs are hit by naval AC today north of Luzon and must put into port for repairs.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-11-42

CHINA:

British continue to hold at Hong Kong.

Chinese capture Nanning.

Malaya:

CINC SEAC sacked the commander of 223rd RAF Group HQ today for incompetence. After massing 12 Swordfish and 19 Vildabeest at Georgetown covered by 43 P-40B for a major strike on the IJN BBs at Khota Bharu 223rd RAF Group bungled the entire operation. The fighter sweep over Khota Bharu went well with 22 P-40B killing 5 of the 6 A6M2 LRCAP over Khota Bharu but then the 21 P-40B escort was sent with 5 Swordfish and 6 Vildabeest to Songkhia where there was no Japanese CAP. The remaining 7 Swordfish and 13 Vildabeest went unescorted into Khota Bharu losing 3 of each plane type and scoring no hits.

The defenders of Khota Bharu held on another day against overwhelming odds.

DEI:

8 Martin 139 struck CL Kashii scoring 3 bomb hits and leaving it on fire and heavily damaged.

CENTPAC:

The USN CVs continued to work over the IJN transports off Tarawa scoring 9 hits on an AP:

SITUATION REPORT: 12-13-42

DEI/PI

By massing a combination of heavy and medium bombers and torpedo planes covered by 40+ P-40E Baby KB is compelled to withdraw from the PI. With the successful evacuation of PoW and Repulse the Allies have created a "Fleet in Being" and the Japanese amphibious assault forces in Palau slated for conquest of southern PI/Eastern DEI are stuck in port. Japan is compelled to commit papa KB to the theatre to break the stalemate which will take 6-7 days to re-deploy. This will make the central Pacific safe for re-supply and troop build-up for the near future.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-16-43

Tough day for the Allies......Hong Kong, Tuguegaro and Tavoy all fall to the Japanese. Casualties at Hong Kong are particularly high as 16,000 troops surrender. A Chinese counterattack at Yenen is thrown back with heavy losses. The Allies lose a couple TKs off Malaya during a botched evacuation operation.

On a brighter note, the 1st of the damaged BBs from Pearl Harbor reach west coast ports.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-18-41

Two more IJN subs are sunk....one off the California coast near Los Angeles.

Alor Star continues to hold but it appears as if the Japanese are making a large thrust into Burma instead of Malaya.

In China, the Japanese have massed 90,000+ troops at Yenen with many more on the way:

SITUATION REPORT: 12-21-42

CENTRAL PACIFIC:

Not much going on except sub/asw battles.

DEI/PI:

Ominously quiet.

MALAYA:

Not much going on as far as land offensives. The Japanese are conducting major air operations to attrition the Allied air forces. With large aerial assaults on aerodromes at Georgetown and Singapore the AVG has been beaten down and forced to withdraw. The Buffaloes have been butchered of course.

RAF command is very concerned that almost half the aircraft assigned to CAP repeatedly ignore orders to fly and end up being destroyed on the ground.

BURMA:

This seems to be the primary Japanese offensive outside of China. Large concentrations of IJA troops have been spotted streaming towards Rangoon. The Allies successfully counterattacked at the road junction 60 mi east of Rangoon and threw the Japanese back towards Rahaeng but nothing will be able to stop the massive Japanese juggernaut here.

CHINA:

IJA is launching major offensives toward Yenen and Wuchow.

The Chinese counterattacked successfully at Changsha and threw the Japanese back towards Wuhan.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-28-41

Dutch Martin 139s have a good day as they land 3 hits on an AK and one hit each on an AP and a MSW off Borneo.

Japanese offensive in Malaya seems limited so far. A force of 20,000 plus (1 Inf Div and 1 Armor Reg) are driving south from Alor Star and only 10,000 Inf. are attacking at Kuantan. Another 3 units are 60 mi N of Kuantan moving south to reinforce there. Khota Bharu has been enlarged to a size 6 airbase and holds 100+ fighters and 100+ bombers in addition to 16 ground units including a heavy flak regiment. The Japanese air force at Khota Bharu has been strong enough to batter the AVG and establish air superiority over the Malay peninsula.

IN Borneo on the other hand, the IJA has 22,000 troops 60 miles east of Rangoon with another 20,000 to the SE. This seems to be the main Japanese effort in SE Asia so far.
