PBEM Aztez (A) vs FDRLincoln(J) (Vorsteher and Hawker replaced)

Chine becomes the major operational theatre...
Game date is now 13th of May 1942
Not that much happening in past two days.
The Japanese offensive againts Sian continues and the city's forts are now levelled. There are too many IJN troops attacking so the imminent fall of the city will be soon. The question now is whether to retreat now or try to bring in reinforcements. I will think about this but I will propably surrender this base to the IJN infantry... unless next assaults bring better odds to the defenders.
My CV fleet continue their destined route... those TF's are unspotted so this is good news indeed.
He is still flying operations againts Canton Island so it is unclear whether he will try landings againts the island... propably not at the moment since I still do hold Noumea. This I guess would be more juicy target if Japanese are concerned.
Japanese are still clearing the little islands in Philippines.. this time around it was Iloilo that fell againts these assaults. There are only couple more islands which he will invade and than he has captured the whole PHI and DEI region.
As you can see he will commence his major naval offensives soon enough... since there just isn't that much "safe" places which to invade nomore.
The Burma situation is unclear... still no action there around Mandalay.. I will make a probe attack there to see how much firepower he has moved there. Also, I will start air campaign againts Akyab and hopefully I can do some harm againts those Aircrafts based there.

Quiet few days but the "storm" will be forthcoming...
Game date is 15th of May 1942
Quiet turn.. Japanese did not attack Sian with force instead there was just a small probing ground bombardment. I guess those IJN troops were tired and needed the rest.. well that wohn't last long and I would assume that the onslaught will continue in next turn. The odds are not good.. just +60000 Chinese againts well organized Japanese (200000).. result propably is quit obvious.
There were landings in Koepang.. that wasn't a success since only +2000 IJN troops were involved. Their intelligence propably wasn't quite up to date because such a low number of troops were involved.
Allied aircraft did bombard Akyab airfields and caused some minor damage.. That is always good and I will continue doing this in the forthcoming days.
There are now 10 IJN units based in Mandalay area.. I do not know how strong this force is so I have ordered a bombardment attack here so that I can get estimate about the number of troops involved.
Also, I have now sent two British brigades from Karachi to Asansol.. Those units will be used as emergency reserve if the situation gets critical.
As for the US CV fleet.. well it is reaching the Canton Island as we speak. This is a major force and if he chooses to start operations againts Noumea or Canton Island than all hell will break loose... one thing for sure there will be a lot of ships blazing in both sides.
British fleet is on a standby and ready to move in if the IJN fleet will show up near India... that battle should also be very intresting since the Royal navy is not toothless!
Few sub attacks were reported again.. and thus far I'm very pleased how my submarine fleet is functioning.
On the other notes Vorsteher will away on holiday the whole May so the hostilities will continue when he gets back..
as above this would be great time to hear any suggestions you readers will have (If there are anybody reading...) since I would like get more aggressive soon...

Problems in China growing.. Sian falls...
Game date is 17th of May 1942
Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the combat report so here is a text summary of latest events.
In China Sian has now fallen.. there was no stopping the Japanese offensive. Those troops that were defending the city have now retreated towards north. That isn't good and as the result the road towards Chungking is now open. Fortunately he can't move whole offensive force towards Chungking since I can launch a counterstrike if he chooses to do so. I will also dispatch some infantry units towards Chungking in order to bolster the defenses there.
My CV fleet has now docked in Canton Island and last turn those Wildcats shot down the Japanese Zeros that have been assaulting the base. This however has given away coordinates of my CV's. It is intresting to see if he will launch a major offensive againts these huge TF's. The CV TF's will continue towards South as soon as they are refuelled.
Also few submarines did attack Japanese troop transports allthough those ships were empty I'm glad to see that happening.
Japanese has also withdrawn their Zero squadrons from Akyab... I guess he calculated that the casualties are too big. As promised I did probing attack in Mandalay and It seems that the enemy strength is 100000 infantry men... so this is quite substantial force and I can't take this situation lightly.
Still no sign of BB's or any other major surface vessels.. I wonder what he is up to???

RE: Chine becomes the major operational theatre...
Due to the lack of intrest I have decieded to stop updating this AAR... the War however will not be stopped in no means.. I will fight to the bitter end of things.
It is time to start planning future allied operations and make KB a sunken momument for cuba divers [:D]

Im sorry to read this , i was following this very well written AAR with great interest as i've recently started 2 PBEM as allies ( my first taste of real opponents ).. would you re consider ? I'm writhing an AAR and e-mailing it to interested friends of mine rather than posting after reading the beer wars ??? fiasco.
Even if you dont carry on I wish you all the best with the Game and hope you win !
Good Luck
Rob

Even though we are silent and lurking, it doesn't mean there is no interest. Number of hits on this topic tells that, I usually check many of the AAR threads, since most are very entertaining.

Don't give up. It's my first official post (not that there were any unofficial posts) so no way that you can stop updating it now. We have to see you crush the Japanese empire that engaged in such reckless expansionism.
RE: Chine becomes the major operational theatre...
Thanks guys.. well to put it short I will update this in the future.. and one thing guaranteed it is going to get bloody.
Rob: If you are intrested than you can email your AAR to me too... I think that would make intresting reading [:)]
Vorsteher is still in his vacation so the game is paused. He should get back in a week or so and then things will continue.
There are couple of major guide lines that I'm following in forthcoming weeks..
I'm not going to sit back if/when he launches his next major assault... it doesn't matter if he chooses South Pacific or Central Pacific... this is why I have dispatched my CV's down to South.
I might loose big time with this move but I will get those ships back if they are sunk so I'm willing to take this gamble.. in best case scenario KB and other vessels will become monuments for holiday scuba divers [;)] ...hopefully so but as said in worse case scenario those CV's will be back as Essex class ships [;)]
If he chooses India than he better be prepared to fight with Royal Navy... since if he thinks that I will hide in harbours than he is greatly mistaken.
China is the major problem and headache.. now that he has captured Sian he has open road towards Chungking... that is not good. Only good news is that those forces retreated towards North China... that means he can't ignore them... he has to keep substantial garrison in Sian and can't move with full force towards Chungking. Hopefully this situation hinders his future operations somewhat.
I still have troops awaiting their movement orders in Pearl Harbour.. those units are destined to South Pacific but I have decieded not to move them out yet. The ocean is not safe for them to redeploy towards South.
I have also dispathed a lot of Submarines to lurk around Kwalein island chain... that should result to Japanese ships being sunk. Thus far the total ships sunk is (if I remember correctly) 109 for Japanese and 119 for allies.

RE: Chine becomes the major operational theatre...
great , i look forward to the continuation of the war.
Only one caveat with your carriers , stay if at all possible under land based air. Im sure you wont throw them away needlessly but losing them would really hurt and probably give him an auto 4-1 .
China as you say is a mess .. look at my game there .. totally differant and utterly odd situation where we both have huge amounts of troops out of supply
hope you got the e-mail . ill send u the latest AAR when i get the reply .
cheers

RE: Chine becomes the major operational theatre...
As Rob said, losing all/most US CVs will give IJN almost unlimited possibilities for invasions and sealine interdiction. It's very risky to use them against IJN CVs before flak and air group upgrades. Essex carriers won't help much if one is losing by auto-victory in Jan 1943.

RE: Chine becomes the major operational theatre...
First of all thanks for the comments guys.
Both of you made valid points... and I do propably back off with the plan of engaging the KB at the moment (allthough I haven't made up my mind yet)... believe me there is nothing more than I would love to do.
... but the downside as I see with this style of action is that Japanese will have "freedom" anyway since he is aware that I wohn't commit my CV's to action... Doesn't that make allied side of things as vulnerable as it can get??? Yeah, I would like CV's to remain under LBA cover but that is impossible if I look the things down South Pacific.. There isn't enough planes and there just isn't enough quality pilots to do this.. so that makes this endevour risky!
Allthough I must admit that losing all the CV's without inflicting serious damage to KB is worrying scenario... oh well if I only could look at the future! You all think I should restrain myself until 1943 starts... ???
I must also say that I always play aggressive so it is kind of hard to hold back sometimes!!
Oh, and Rob email sent back.. looking forward to your AAR!

Well, I'd say that before 4/42 and 7/42 upgrades US CVs are quite vulnerable. Not to mention Zero-bonus !! But you should be able to hit IJN where KB is not before 4/42. Use the US carriers to pick up enemy transports and be prepared to run if KB arrives to area. After Zero-bonus is gone in May, you can engage KB in more equal terms.
But, IJN will retain much of it's quality edge until Essex-carriers plus they will have better strike co-ordination until 1944.
I'm not saying that you cannot engage KB, just that it's risky. If you do, don't necesarily commit *all* your CV assets. Even 2 US CVs are valid threat to IJN invasions.
Cheers,
M.S.

Oh, and Rob email sent back.. looking forward to your AAR!
the Japaese dont have freedom to do anything they want . Not while your carriers are still in being. If hes got a large assault planned he needs to send KB along so hes restricted to one direction. Without the allied CV's hes free to operate with minimal carrier support and can explode all over the map. There is only so much land based air can do in the face of invasions and BB bombbardment.
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit
The War continues... quiet days but for long...
I have been thinking what both of you have been saying and decieded to withdraw my CV fleet towards safety of Pearl Harbour.
Sardaukar is right about those upgrades 7/42 isn't far away and at least until that time I should be cautious... also my opponent will loose the Zero bonus soon so that is good news also.
So, as stated I have decieded to halt CV operations.. I know he is up to something since it is too darn quiet all around the Pacific. He has to commit his forces soon and than I will deciede whether to launch major operations with my CV's!
I have read your AAR's Rob (you are doing nicely).. I will comment more via email when I get some freetime
Oh, and the game has resumed and as I said it's been quiet few days...
Game date is now 21st of May 1942
Nothing much happening... Japanese advance in Sian has been brought to halt.. He might be low on Supplies or he might just be resting his troops. Few Chinese units well on their way towards Chungking and those troops that retreated are holding 1 hex above Sian --> ready to strike if he leaves Sian unguarded.
South Pacific hasn't seen much action.. I still think he is thinking of offensive againts Noumea but so far that operation hasn't started.
I have been busy building forts, airfields and ports in this region.
Also Burma is intresting.. he has substantial forces in Mandalay area and still he hasn't decieded to attack! That is weird unless he is planning ahead againts India and his other troops aren't ready yet to commence their operations! That would explain that!
Well, It has been quiet few days but "storm" will start soon enough... that is a safe bet!

Burma heats up.. and Yenen is under attack...Things are getting intresting!
The game date is now 25th of May 1942
Past few days have been intresting.. It seems that at least in Burma and China are going to be assaulted bigtime.
First of all it seems Japanese are advancing in Burma... My opponent did assault Mandalay bigtime last turn and if my intel is right there are more troops on their way towards that area. Also he has stocked 14 units into Rangoon and if you count these units together than it seems Burma is going to be lost cause for allies. I do not know whether he is planning a major assault againts India via Burma... that would be slow going but it would save his navy vessels! To be honest I do not know what to think about the situation here!!!??? and what his future intensions are!!?
Also in China Yenen was assaulted.. there at least +100000 Japanese troops sieging the city! This is going to be slaughter to both sides and hopefully those Chinese troops can hang in there at least sometime!
On the bright side both of this assaults caused major casualties to the Japanese.
South Pacific has been quiet... I did try to bombard Luganville with B17's and that didn't turned up too good! Elsewhere it has been very quiet!
He has also sent some transport vessels towards Lautern... my B17's attacked those ships last turn and caused somewhat damage to them.. Hopefully I can inflict more in forthcoming turn.
My CV's are in safety and couple of them are going to get upgrades in coming few days. Intresting enough I do not have a clue where the KB or Japanese BB's are at the moment!!! That does make me somewhat nervous!!!

RE: Burma heats up.. and Yenen is under attack...Things are getting intresting!
You could send couple of US divisions to Karachi by changing their HQ to SEAC in US West Coast. It'll take 60 days for them to arrive in Karachi. That way you could reinforce India quite substantually. If you'd want to be really evil you can even transfer some of those West Coast Forts to Karachi..that'd be nasty surprise if he ever gets into India and tries to bombard Karachi [:'(]. 16" CD guns and all...[:D]. It'll take lot of PP, though.
That is of course if you don't have house rule to prevent this.
Anyhow, couple of divisions in India would be lot more useful than in West Coast.
Cheers,
M.S.

very good points, also if hes going through burma ( its very possible, i,ve done it vs the AI in a game where i didnt allow myself to invade india from the sea ) .. fortify the bases around calcutta and try and keep him in the malarial zones in burma. Maybe try and place speed bumps at the edge of the malarial area to keep him in it as long as possible. Also bomb the heck out of the lead units if you can , he'll have to use LR cap to protect them and it will slow him down substantionally.
Good luck

RE: Burma heats up.. and Yenen is under attack...Things are getting intresting!
We don't have any house rules on that matter in effect!...I have actually already sent 1 RCT Unit from San Francisco to Karachi. It should pop up there within 14 days!!! ...What you Sardaukar said about CD units is intresting idea but it seems his navy is nowhere to be found... that is not good since he is preparing something major... likely targets are 1) India 2) Australia 3) South/Central Pacific!
Oh, you have done it than Rob... Burma is actually quite intresting at the moment... he does not control much of it but has a lot of troops in position there.. more about that later. As both of you said I will propably send 1 US division to Karachi from San Francisco! That should bolster my defences substantially.
Game date is now 29th of May 1942
Burma is getting a lot of IJN attention. He has sent 2-3 units from Mandalay area into the Jungle.. what he is likely doing is trying to encircle my troops guarding Mandalay! That is nasty thing to do.. I wohn't retreat from Mandalay since there is no point of giving his this forward base! Japanese airforce has also launched major assaults againts the base from Rangoon! As stated I have decieded to hang onto Mandalay... what I have done is that I have sent couple of Chinese ground units from Yunan to guard Burma road... if he takes Mandalay than he cannot leave his rear unguarded because those units will cut off his supply lines and cause a lot of trouble for him... well, that is the idea at least!
Nothing much happening in India nor Australia... I'm fortifying my bases and waiting for the reinforcements to arrive. Same goes for Central/South and North Pacific... no action to speak off... I will have few ship upgrades happening in fortcoming turn.. also been shipping supplies and fuel to Central Pacific.
Japanese now control Timor near Australia. I would have liked to contest those landings but didn't have any suitable forces nearby and ready for that action.
China is waiting and taking a breather.. I will bet that he will launch at least 2 offensives soon.. one will centered around Yenen and other towards Chungking! Not much to do but wait here... I'm having a problem though.. My opponent is bombarding at Ichang every single turn... I would like to move my troops outside the city but I seem unable to do that???!!! Why on earth I'm unable to retreat and call off the offensive???
That's is the situation at the moment.. here are few Combat reports:

June approaching... war seeing no happy endings...
Game date is now 31st of May 1942
It seems he has stacked a lot of his troops to Northern China... I did try to counter assault in Ichang... to my suprise my 30000 Chinese met "only" +30000 Japanese troops! Basically he has stacked his troops in Sian region... and that begs a question whether he has also left Changsa lightly guarded!!! If so I will try to recapture the city... that should make him think twice before launching any offensives in China.
Burma... well Mandalay is bombed again from Air! These ac's are coming from Rangoon and therefore I did order an bombardment run to hit Rangoon airfield! That mission wasn't overly succesfull but it wasn't unsuccesfull either! No major land offensives in Burma were fought this time around!
Koepang finally fell and now Japanese have full control of Timor! That basically means that he has forward bases ready if he wishes to launch offensives againts Australia.
Otherwise it wasn't very eventfull turn... supplies and troops are being shipped all around. 1 Canadian brigade is on its way to bolster the defenses in Palmyra! I have other ground units on standby but haven't decieded what their final destination will be... so big "logistical" question ahead! '

RE: June approaching... war seeing no happy endings...
The game date is now 4th of June 1942
Things remain pretty much the same as they were before... allthough increased air activity in South Pacific and Burma should mean that major operations are on their way.
I did have to withdraw 1 BB and 2 DD's to Britain... that really sucks since I have been unlucky with this withdrawal policy. Well, Royal Navy still carries a punch so Japanese should be concerned about that!
In China it has been resting period all the way... Few of my Chinese infantry troops have moved forward towards Changsa in order to find out how strong the Japanese central army really is since he has a lot of troops in North! It is intresting to see what kind of a force I'm dealing with!
I have ordered withdrawal from Mandalay... those troops are retreating towards Myithkina! This has been done simply because those troops were in danger of getting cut off and would have killed. This way they still remain a solid fighting force.. and since I still hold Myithkina I have the Burma road open... and that is very important!
All in all things are gathering pace... and my opponent has stated that I will be very suprised soon... we shall see what his plans are!
