Mobile Group Tank Army

Post by MagnusOlsson »

Hi folks.
In a PBEM game I just encountered a russian unit called a 'Mobile Group Tank Army'. What is that? How many are there? I am a bit concerned about this...

I think it is a predessor to the modern mobile tank units that were behind the front and should use the hole in the line the front unit created.

God Jul Magnus
A great man ones said "Veni Vidi Vici" and "Alea iacta est"

Thank's.
My concern was that I've never seen any Mobile Tank units before. It now seems like the russian side has more tank units than before. Is that so, or is my opponent playing an edited version of WiR that I am unaware of?

God jul själv!

I don't know what their actually meant to reflect. There had been "mobile groups" in Soviet operations before, but usually smaller, much smaller, but then I saw some references to these groups later, but they were much bigger. At least from what (little) I've read, its not clear to me.

As far as WiR goes, its a tank army, simple as that. There are Mobile Groups in other scenarios, but not the '41 campaign game. This means in the other scenarios the Soviets have up to 8 tank armies, but in the campaign game they only have 5. The reason this is the case is because mobile groups were classified by the game as different from a tank army (different ID number) even though they are just tank armies (the same characteristics). Because of that different ID, the game never made these corps available to a human player on the corps list screen, but the AI *was* able to use them. So if they're in the other scenarios, and the AI can use them, why not humans? In the '41 campaign, the Germans have (or will have later in the game) access to a total of 18 panzer korps, so giving the Soviets 3 more for a total of 8 sounds reasonable. I can't remember if the new change is already out with the last release, or will be out with the next release, but I think what you're seeing is the fact we've reclassified the Mobile Groups as real tank armies in obwir, so the game will let you use them when it allows the Soviets to build the other tank armies.

If I remember right the Soviet doctrine called those units OMG = Operationel maneuver groups, the only problem with the system <img src="tongue.gif" border="0"> (well at least this one) were that if a brekthruu were made the OMG could only be given the orderto move by the most senior general at the theater, or in the worst case Moscow.

Never used in battle but they are mentioned in Red Storm Rising (by Tom Clancy)
