resource transit

Post by Pocus »

Hi,

2 questions, I would like to have some confirmations:

1. there is 2 WA transports in South Atlantic 3 and 4. If I understand well the resource rule, they are not needed to grab the southern resources, as Brazil is an ally, that move these resources to the north.

2. if you are the sole that can grab resources (the ones from neutral countries in south america for example), is their any interest - strictly resource-wise) to capture these countries? I dont think so, as you get half of the resource pool each turn.

Correct & correct.
resources flow through neutrals, so you get them through Central America & Mexico.
Nope not much reason to attack them. If you do it'll cost 10 supply (as WA) and then you gotta repair the resource, another 10. It's not really worth it, unless you just GOTTA attack somewhere :)

Doesn't your alliance get all the supply from neutrals if only you are the only alliance boarding them? Mexico is neutral and produces 1 res.

Turn 1: One resource is availible. Split into two, each alliance should get .5 res but fractions round down so each alliance gets 0 res. The resource is saved.

Turn 2: Two resources are availible. Split into two, each alliance should get 1 res each. Wallies are connected and take theirs, Germany is not connected so they don't take any. One resouce in Mexico is saved.

Turn 3 and after: The same thing happens as turn 2 until Germany can maintain a freighter network to Mexico. Then they get one Mexican resouce every other turn, as does the WAllies. I believe that if Japan can maintain a freighter network to mexico and Germany can't, then the Mexican resource is offered to the Japanese instead. Haven't proved it yet.

That's why it's important for the WAllies to nibble around the edges of Germany. Take Portugal early and deprive Ger one resouce every other turn. Capture Iran and deprive Germany one resouce a turn. Take Norway back and keep it in the network and you have deprived germany 5 resouces every two turns because you are now sharing the three resources from Sweden. Always maintain a network to Spain, Turkey and Greece so you can deprive the Germans of half the resources and collect the other half for the WAllies.

Simple rule: Take out any neutral that shares with your opponent. Defend any neutral that doesn't. Keep as many neutrals as you can in your network while destroying your opponents network.

You are mostly correct. I think that with 2 resources, Germany takes 1 and no one else gets any. So areas with only 1 resource will give all of them to the first player in turn order that connects to the area. An area like Sweden which has more than 1 resource is good for the Allies to get next to for the reasons you stated, but those with only 1 resource will give all their resources to the Axis if they are adjacent after the first turn of stockpiling. I'm pretty sure this is how it works (at least that's what we intended).

Do resources automatically accrue to the owner. For example, if the Japanese take a region that has a resource (and repairs it if need be), does the Japanese player get that resource each turn that it continues to hold that region? Or does a resource have to have a link (land or transports) back to a factory? Sorry but I'm really not clear on how resources work in the game.

Once repaired, they will produce resources every turn, and if they aren't used up, a certain number can be stored in the region (see the manual for storage limits). If linked via land or transports to a factory that needs resources, they will automatically move when needed. If not linked, they will just stay stored in their original region until a link is established and a need makes them move.

And there is some confusion (due to rulebook) that rails might be involved. They aren't! Just any land/transport combination will get your resources to their factories. No rails involved, no transport capacity "used".
So Mexico's 1 resource goes to the WA every turn, unless the Axis gets a transport next to it, or takes a province next to it (and that province connects to an Axis factory).
The way I understand it, Sweden's 2 goes as follows: Turn 1:Produce 2, 0 in storage, Germany gets 1, 1 is stored. Turn 2: Produce 2, 1 in storage (3 total), Germany gets 1, 1 is stored (now 2 stored) Turn 3: Germany gets 2, still 2 in storage & this is repeated until the WA or Russia makes a connection. I hope I got that right :) that a newly produced resource doesn't count against the storage limit.

Joel, This would mean that Germany would have first dibs on all resources. That would be contrary to what the rule book says. Portugal is connected by Germany (after the fall of france) over land and usually connected to WAllies via transport link. Are you saying that Portugal's resouces will always go to Germany first? If one alliance is connected to a two resource minor, is only one resource collected each turn and the other thrown away. This would imply that neutrals do not store resources locally up to top twice production. Please tell me that is not how it works. My first description was far more logical and elegant. Say it aint so, Joel!

It is so that Germany will get first dibs, and a 1 resource neutral will give everything to Germany. Those with 2 or more will end up storing enough so that some should go to 2 different players (starting with Germany and then in player order as long as they have a link). This was intended. We couldn't deal with fractions and these free trade resources are much more important for the Axis if they can get them. Also, given that Germany is on the continent, it is more likely they would be able to get the free trade than the Western Allies (an army at your doorstep is likely to impress you more than a navy). We think the system works fine the way it is and gives Germany pause for attacking neutrals they can just as easily trade with. Neutrals do store resources as per the normal storage rules if they are not being given away as free trade.

Thanks Joel, I can live with that. It doesn't change overall strategy but it does put greater imperative on taking out neutrals connected to Germany. It also explains why the Germans never attack Greece since it has no military or economic value. It would be different if Greece were activated as an alliance member when Yugo is attacked.

Is there a hierarchy of powers that a neutral will offer its resources? First Germany then Japan then WAllies, then Russians, last Chinese. If Germany and Japan can trace a supply route to a nuetral, which power gets the resource? Are some countries preprogrammed to supply a resource to a particular power? IE the Allies share of the resources from Yugo will always flow to Russians even if the WAllies are connected.
Do Alliance partners ever share resources? I never saw any Chinese resources ever flow to the Russians or WAllies even when they weren't being used by China.

IIRC the hierarchy for collecting ressources is the same as the time when a nation has its turn.

Germany -> Japan -> Russia -> China -> WA

Do transports that have used up all their transport capacity still move resources to your factories?
