My conclusions on game balance

Gary Grigsby's World At War gives you the chance to really run a world war. History is yours to write and things may turn out differently. The Western Allies may be conquered by Germany, or Japan may defeat China. With you at the controls, leading the fates of nations and alliances. Take command in this dynamic turn-based game and test strategies that long-past generals and world leaders could only dream of. Now anything is possible in this new strategic offering from Matrix Games and 2 by 3 Games.

Yes the same David Irving who in a legal judgement had the following said about him.

On this count Mr Justice Gray was unequivocal and damning: Irving was not a dispassionate researcher, but a 'pro-Nazi polemicist'.

I've never thought of Irving as anything other than a self-publicist with some odd interpretaions of history.

We know historically that Britain never made a move towards a peace on Germany's terms. What was put forward was that the possibility of such an action was plausible. Considering that a player has the possibility of doing BETTER then Germany did historically (especially in the beginning of WAW), I felt it was plausible and gave the autovictory portion some degree of historical accuracy - whereas in certain other games you see panzer tanks overrunning Washington in 1944. (good luck trying to base that as a realistic possibility)

Care to point me to the source of this cliam by David Irving. This may be misquoted from his book on Hitler where he says there is no evidence, written proof, that Hitler ordered the final solution on the jewish problem. This does not in any way say that no jews were killed in concentration camps.

Hmm, well, considering that the source quoted here is David Irving - who is said to be fairly sympathetic to the Nazis - I do have some doubts about the point of view presented here. We are talking about the same David Irving who claims that no Jews were killed in Auschwitz and other concentration camps...

The source of dispute amout Mr. Irvings Claim:

In the prefix to his first addition of Hitler's War, published in 1976, David Irving claims that Hitler was a powerful warlord who's control over the civillian aspects of his dictatorship weakend in dirict proportion to the number of toy soldiers he played with at the Wolfs Lair". [&:]

Mr. Irving cintinues, to list several statements by Hitler that seem to indicate that he (Hitler) did not wish to exterminate any Jews (at the present time).[:(]

Irving then posted a 100,000 pound bond offered to anyone who could provide documented evidence that Hitler was aware of the "Final Solution" prior to late 1943.[:@]

The bond was finally claimed a few years ago by someone who got ahold of a memo from Himmiler to Adolf Eichman. Although the implication was "second hand", the trustees felt that it had been fairly won.[>:]

David Irving is a fascinating, if controversial writer, possibly better suited to fiction than history. To be fair, the book, "Hitler's War" does give you the picture from behind the toothbrush mustache, but I, for one, would not want to GO there.[:o]

Perhaps Irvings work is best summed up by one of his contemporaries, "Mr. Irving is a person who studies history...and is...perhaps least inclined to miss any fact which appears to be in Hitler's favor"[:'(]

His books are an interesting read, but very subjective. The 60 million people who died in World War Two deserve a better representation.[:-]

"I don't see any reason to be tasteful about Auschwitz. It's baloney, it's a legend. Once we admit the fact that it was a brutal slave labour camp and large numbers of people did die, as large numbers of innocent people died elsewhere in the war, why believe the rest of the baloney?" Irving said.
He added, "I say quite tastelessly, in fact, that more women died on the back seat of Edward Kennedy's car at Chappaquiddick than ever died in a gas chamber in Auschwitz."

He went on, "Oh, you think that's tasteless, how about this? There are so many Auschwitz survivors going around, in fact the number increases as the years go past, which is biologically very odd to say the least. Because I'm going to form an Association of Auschwitz survivors, survivors of the Holocaust and other liars, or the ASSHOLS."

David Irving

Well, nothing to add I think...

CharonJr

PS: I should have said "killed on purpose by gas", but basically he claims it was a work camp and not set up to systematically exterminate the Jews.

PS2: He said this during the first day of his law suit on January 11th, 2000.
