Spring time in Moscow and Chungking.

Komrad Stalin, has been busy on the diplomatic front. Beria was send off to kill the imperialistic dog Chiang Kai-Shak. Mao was send on "vacation" in Siberia and from now on, China and its communist party is under the control of the rightfull communist party. The Soviet one.

This was celebrated by a quick counter-offensive. Shanghai was retaken from the imperialistic japanease dogs. The 2 militia were kill off in exhange for a mere Inf. damaged.

Other news.

Conscripts of the glorius year 1940 was drafted and Red Army are soon to be
strong again after its betrayel of the late 30ies.

The rumors of Soviet scientists messing with nuclear bombs has been dismissed.

Last, but not the least. Sports. Dynamo Kiev 0 Dynamo Moscow 2.

Nastrovia.

Spring 1940
'Blast Off; Operation Torch'

Those who have talked to me before know I feel the way the Western Allies play from 40'-42' is what decides the game. I've been trying to find a suitable strategy to take on the Axis '70 Points Without Russia', and decided to put my knewest scheme into action. I launched a massive offensive, at least by UK terms into the heartland of North Africa, taking no less then four provinces from the Axis graps. In particular, Italian East Africa, Sardina, Torbuk and Tripoli. The Royal Navy controls almost the entire Med, with a considerable task force lodged just south of Italy, and another force off of Sardina.

I would think this is a highly unorthodox approach, and for all I know I've doomed myself with that opening move. However, in the current situation Svend cannot reinforce North Africa, thus effectivley cutting him off from any hopes of a Middle East press. This screenshots demonstrates the current situation, with unit numbers hidden for ovbious reasons.

The British High Comand took particular relish in this victory, as British losses remain amazinly low. Not a single division [read unit] was damaged or lost in the Torch Campaign.

Red X's indicate taken territory this turn.

Research is a blend of the neccesties and my own personal taste. I'm hoping Mr. Hitler doesn't get discourgaged with me and turn to an early Russian attack. I'd rather him engage in a series of attrition battles with me and my own units. I'm afraid that once Germany gives up on the UK and turns its sights to Germany theres hardly much for me to do until the US gets into the war, which could for all I know not be until 1943.

Excellent Maginot, young Padawan learns fast [:D], everyone should read this... why?

Because this is finest example so far of what may happen if *Axis insists on taking Yugoslavia on turn 1*!

So many Axis players insist on this stupid Yugo move, which is so wrong, and chain of events I will not describe in detail here, may, and will lead to losing mucho of the Mediterranean for Axis as per above example by Maginot. [&o]

Now, had the brave Italian admirals used their fleets vs. British on turn one, instead of chickenly sure-fire bombing of ARTY-less Yugoslavs.... hmmm.... [;)]

Oh sorry Maginot. I placed this query in our set-up email:

I don't intend to give away strategic intentions or tech/build queues during this AAR. I'd suggest for a level playing field doing the same. Are people okay with that idea?

Since no one disagreed I thought it would be safe enough to read each others posts, but since you prefer not to this will be the last time I will look in here - no problem [:)]

Personally I still tend to take Yugoslawia on turn one as the Axis, but I prefer to sacrifice 4 militia and use my fleet the drive the UK fleet out of the Med. Basically I think that you can do both.

And yes, as the Allies I try to keep the Med my little pool as long as possible, too. Italy will have to be garrisoned much longer and better this way in addition to denying the Middle East to the Axis.

Summer 1940, Soviet and China.

Its been a hot hot summer and most activity comes to a stand still.
Stalin spend 2 months in a dacha on the Crimea. After a review of the rebuilding Red Army, he is off to China to hand out medals to the commander of the 73. Chinease army for its succesfull counter attacks in the spring.
China have asked for opening of hostilities between USSR and the imperialistic japanease dogs, but it was flatly refused. This mean that there has only been minor movement on the front, meanwhile the incitement of the chinease ppl are continuing. Expect partisans every where.

The soviet scientist are still hard at work and a new tank gun has been invented.

Sports. All soccer games have been cancelled due to the heat wave and some say that a hot summer makes for a cold winter...

1940 Summer
Retreats and Reinforcments

A rather unproductive season, with mostly the shuffling of troops. While not a single memeber of the Army has been slain in the conflict as of this far the British Merchant fleets are a completely diffrent story. More fleets were yet again sacrificed to allow for the movment of troops out of Gibraltar as well as troops into Sardina. With the Royal Navy and Italian Navy squared off in the Med I belive I have one more heavy fleet then him, and my Tactical Bomber in Malta postioned to intercept any U-Boat movments.

Not much else to report this season. The original report of the Summer Season was lost when the commanders internet service died and his original post was erased.

Fall 1940. 2nd rewrite due to forum server maintaince while i wrote the first draft, bah[;)]

The rebuilding of the red army continues. Stalin presses his scientists too perform more miracles and they are all hard at work or .... they face a 1 way trip to siberia.
Stalin has been please to see that Mare Nostrum turned into a playground between the axis and WA.
In Romania a paratrop army has appeared. Stalin wonder if this is a prelude to an expansion of the war or if its just an axis ploy to divert the allied intelligence's attention from the mediteranian theather. Spies are forwhite send into Romania to get further info.
Some say a hot summer makes for a cooooold winter.

Virtually just hours after Stalin had left the sino-soviet summer meeting in Lanchow the japanease imperialistic dogs launched a offensive deep into the chinease territory.
This will be the doom of the dogs. It has inspired the chinease ppl and spurred them into action. Soon the production of this great country will be full steam ahead.
Nationalism and the newly found communsist spirit are forged into a hammer of doom. A few chinease armies are redistribuated into countering this naked aggression.
Stalin has pledged to yet again consider his position on helping his brothers in China.

In other news. The crab fishing of the Kola peninsual has reached record heights.
Its a sign of the unconqueble communist spirit. A true triumph for the soviet people.
Things are good and will only get better says Stalin at the 21st annual meeting of the central commite.

Sports. The icehockey season has started, since no strikes are allowed here. More results to follow.

Fall 1940
Ahhh!

Not a good season for the Western Allies, at least by my count. My transports are getting slaugtered in the pacific left and right, and any hope of amphibiously invading Italy has pretty much been halted. The garrison is far too strong for me to hope to launch, but nonetheless I'll be watching to see if Svend slips up.

Gibraltar fell this season, and was reinforced with two U-Boats from Italy which managed to bypass Malta's tactical fighter due to my ignorance. I thought that planes OP fire on subs from islands, but ovbiously not. Needless to say thats one more lesson I won't forget. If your keeping up with our AARs you know by now of my huge mistake concnerning two UK fighter divisions. I accidently moved fighters to the central med strategically, instead of Malta. Svend noticed this and managed to sink the transport that they were on. I was very discourgaged at first but I was actually able to somehow pull more fighters out of my ass and manage to send another fighter to Malta.

A U-Boat slipped out to hit my African convoys, where it was pursued and damaged. I've taken the neccessary precautions to make sure it won't happen again.

It was Fall 1940, and thus, research season. This is the first turn where units can possible be upgraded a level, and I've yet to notice just what he has invested in, though I belive he has something along the lines of heavy air research. Both of our fleets continue to stare each other down. The Italian fleet does not wish to leave the saftey of the Adratic, and I'm certainly not sending my fleet into it, so we continue to have our stand off. We both damaged a heavy fleet, and he took out an additional light fleet, though I'm not worried. I feel that I'm currently doing OK as its coming up on 41 and hopefully the only plan thats come together so far for Svend was Spain-Gibratlar, and that was never really in question of failure.

No new territory taken this season as quite frankly there is little territory left worth taking. I'm unsure as to wether or not Vichy France unfreezes at a set date, so if someone could clear that up for me it would be great.

Svends Panzer units are spread out all over Europe, and I even caught site of three in the Balkans area, though I'm unsure as to what hes going for. Pherhaps Greece or Turkey?

Japan shows signs of a heavy land based effort, and even took an inland province this turn, which is in my opinon a mistake. Not only is Chinese production ramped up, he lost my three resource gift, something Japan should hold on to until the last second I feel. China looks to be holding up pretty steady, but I'm worried about another Russian squeeze game as so often unfolds. Its still to early to judge who has the edge right now, but I do know that this last turn was the hardest one for me yet. I opened the file and stared at it for a good five to ten minutes before I was ready to make my moves. Even then I found myself shuffling some stuff around. At one point I had a sucide raid into Gibraltar planed to allow me to sneak some more ships in but I realized that wouldn't make much sense.

Svends been a challenging opponent so far, and I'm sure he'll only kick it up another notch next turn. I look forward to testing my Med. Blitz more against him. I have yet to come to any decesion on how well its worked, but I'm relativley happy with my postion right now.

Winter 1941.

Our komrad spies in Romania and East Prussia gives us news of an armored build up.
Stalin is concerned about this news. This build up cant really be considered "friendly".
Molotov is send to Berlin to inquire about these news.
As a peaceloving nation we naturally dont want war, but if war is what a possible enemy wants its what they get.
Rumors of the news German tank called a MkV Panther is also very distrubing.
The soviet scientists are, with great succes, put hard at work too find a counter to this monster.

In China, the yellowbellied japanease imperialistic dogs have continued their offensive and taken Changsha.
This will be their death as the united Chinease ppl are rising to met these dogs.
production is fully geared up and yell for partisans are heard through the country.
A minor strategic move is made from Kumming to Chungking too straigten out the front and are certainly not a withdrawl.
Soon the dogs are lured far enough into the chinease wastes for our glorióus force too counterattack.

Winter 1941
The Collapsing Empire Strikes Back!

The action picks up again, despite the colder climate. While no new territory exchanged hands both the axis and allies inflicted heavy casualties.

My Med. fleet has all but been destroyed with only two heavies and an aircraft less aircraft carrier still floating. I decided that if Svend wanted to play the game of punch for punch it was ok by me, seeing as its coming up on 41, and by this point its time for Svend to start thinking about how he wants to deal with Russia. If he wants to fight it out with me and delay it till 1942 all the stronger my Russian ally will be.

His U-Boats slipped out of port catching some undefended merchant fleets off guard. Rather then move in for a kill with little chance of success I decided to sit tight and deal with the subs next turn. Instead I moved around some assets to better allow me to deal with the U-Boat threat.

Spain was by far the most intresting phase. I noticed the while it was heavily garrisoned with 2 infantry, a panzer and two heavy bombers it had nothing in the way of airdefence. I jumped on this oportunity and did a fair amount of damage, sending both heavy bombers back to the production qeue, completely destroying the railroad and damaging a resource center. The cost in repairs for the next turn will set him back 5 production points, and every turn after that two until both bombers are repaired. With a possible invasion of Russia at any minute, the need for space to take casualties is great and for all I know he may scrap the bombers.

A pretty so-so season, I'm not sure what to think of it.

Spring 1941
Around the World in 6 Supply

Following the stuborness of myself to save the Medterranian Flotilla I decided to use this season to recoup from past losses. The last of my fleet was destroyed far quicker then I imagined, and instead of the two more turns i had to consolitate my forces I instead was left with one infantry and three milita spread across North Africa, with another already fallen prey to straffing fighters.

Rather then sit around and wait for the inevitable I decided to make a run for it. However, due to supply constraints I was only able to move an infantry division, and I expect to lose another milita or two this turn as well. However, it wasn't all bad. Fearing the fall of Cairo I became determined to reinforce the city. However, in order to do so the supply lines to Africa would need to be repaired. As such my Destroyers took to the seas, the effectivness of Svends U-Boats now considerably less due to effective research on several fronts. One U-Boat was damaged back to port and another sent to the bottom of the ocean.

Following that I repaired the supply lines and moved a fighter, an anti-air, a infantry, and my first Armor division to Cairo. I don't expect to see much action however, since its clear that neither me or Svend will ever fight a major battle in the Med again. Simply put, he controls the sea routes with a strong U-Boat and weak surface fleet, but with ourselfs already halfway into 1941 its time for him to turn his eyes east to Russia or risk letting Russia develope its army to even larger sizes.

That was it for this turn for me. I moved fleets around a little for a more effective U-Boat control points. While his boats may still escape into the the Med. I am confident now in my ability to hunt the subs down and destroy them.

I really don't know how this games gonna turn out now. I fear a loss of Russia now as Chinese forces continue to get mauled by Japan. Its not a far strech to assume the US won't be entering the war until Fall 1942.

Sorry guys, no pictures this turn. Theres nothing intresting worth looking at.

Summer 1941
Russia, but When?

Well its clear the majority of the fighting between me and Svend is over for now. Its clear the war is now going to shift into a more naval conflict then before, and to take on this matter I was happy to see a few more ships pop off the production line this season. Svend landed a infantry into the Middle East but I decided to let the infantry alone for now since he isn't causing any real damage or harm. I put a Milita and Infantry into Iraq which is enough to keep him out of there and I will take care of him when I feel the time is right.

I look foward to my next turn as many of the things I've been waiting for are produced this season. The RAF is stronger then ever and I think Svend is in for some intresting suprises in the next few months.

The Gibraltar trick is driving me crazy. One of two things is wrong
-His fleets are bypassing my air unit in Morrocco and not taking any opfire
-The Gibrlatar port is in the Atlantic, but this in turn means his U-Boats got past my units in Morroco without Op-Fire a few turns back.

Anyway due to the nature of his U-Boats I've assigned escorts to transports that are in immediate danger from the U-Boat menace.

Aside from that I just further consolidated my holdings and dug in. Its coming up on Fall now so I'm guessing on either a Fall or Spring invasion of Russia. A fall invasion would be particularly risky.

So far I would say my two biggest mistakes were the idiotic move of my two fighters to the Central Med instead of Malta and being destroyed with the transport -- that can't really be helped anymore. My other concern is the fall of Gibraltar. In retro-spect I think I would have rathered form defensive lines in Iraq and Ethopia and put up a fight in Gibraltar. Live and learn.

Fall 1941
Finland Raid

I've pretty much fallen into a pattern now. Watch my transports die, send in destroyers, rinse, repeat. Thankfully it doesn't take much to get a transport repaired, and with little land opportunties left for me I have nothing better to do then crank out transports and destroyers anyway.

A large contingent of U-Boats, five in total, made their way to the South Atlantic. I was able to send a few back to port at the expense of a light fleet or two, but when it was all said and done I think I was up by a little in sub vs fleet loses.

With Finish troops about to overun Archangel I didn't lend lease at all. I did however launch a daring raid into Finland. After destroying both the resource and the railroad I decided to make myself scarce rather then put up milita against Panzers. I supose I could have landed a larger force and attempted to divert some German forces, but with so many panzers nearby it would have been suicide, and it couldn't have ended well for me. Another Infantry made its presense known in the Middle East today, but with only one supply for both units there is little hope of anything happening. I reinforced Iraq a little to make sure Svend doesnt pull off some ridiculous stunt and overun Iraq by some amazing trick.

All in all the Battle of the Pacific rages on. There is nearly two flak in every costal province, making any raids against fortress Europe nearly impossible. I did send in a bomber however for a little infastrure raid, but alas I scored only a hit on a railroad -- while I was hoping for either Factory or Resource.

Finland Burns! Wouldn't it be nice if the Finland troops surrendered with the fall of their homeland? Would make as much sense as the Italian Surrender rule.

Spring 1942
USA Goes to War

This season was by far one of the most active seasons since 1940. As Japan launches his invasion of Russi along with the occupation of several inland Chinese provinces the United States unfroze, with the entire SRA untouched. I immediatley moved in large amounts of Airpower, and began bombing raids this season. Japanese transports begin to fall prey to my wandering light fleets and subs, and soon enough the big guns should be arriving. It appears Japan invested far too much in its land forces, and I'm sure soon the garrison will be too much for Japan to maintain.

The Atlantic war started to look up today as well, as massive amounts of destroyers and coordinated CAGs struck home at the German U-Boats. With the US entrance now I can effectivley maintain a war of attrition with the U-Boats so I applied my destroyers liberally, coating the entire Atlantic with them. The RAF grew even more in size and I should be able to surpass German air-power within the year. Before Svend was the one willing to trade damaged fighter for fighter but I think that may change very soon as the US multipliers kick in. Quite frankly I don't think the US entrance was WANTED, as it appears the Axis were not prepared. Svend had deployed 4 or 5 U-Boats out in the open, so I'm not sure if his Japanese ally warned him about his plans for Russia/China. The German Armies in the North and South continue to move on Moscow but the Russians maintain a relativley solid defensive peremiter. We'll see how much longer Svend pushes towards Moscow before pressure from the West forces him to re-deploy. With 1943 coming up the modifers are about to kick in again.

Screenshots to come in the next post to show you the current Indonesian and European deplolyments.

Fall 1942

Generally speaking things aren't going as well as they could be, but I'm at least content. Fortress Europe is all but impossible to crack, and its ovbious I'm going to need to take some serious loss's to win. Vichy France remains frozen, though air-raids from Europe continue to weaken my Morrocan garrison, now reduced to an infantry, artillery, and flak. Its possible that Svend cranked out more U-Boats, but research on several fronts makes me feel fairly content in that regard.

I decided to move my Finland task force west to Norway, and paid the 5 supply cost. His tanks have two choices -- invade Finland and then come for me, meaning at LEAST one year before he can use those tanks again (1 turn to Finland, one turn to Norway, one turn back to Russia assuming he repairs railroad, then attacks the following turn) or he can leave my Norway units alone and risk me coming back. Either way I think its a good distraction.

Japan is taking a beating as Allied air supremacy, particullarly fighter takes pot shots at defenceless Chinese soldiers. A British Expeditionary Force moved to Iraq to counter German movments in the Cacusus, and another force moves up the Japanse coast liberating China. Russia has been liberated from any Chinese vermin following a sneaky US U-Boat manuver cutting off a group of two infantry, a flak, and a artillery. Japan has been reduced to milita in many locations. The Japanese fleet remains in the SRA, as some of my units were destroyed this turn. An unsupplied fighter of mine managed to destroy a Japanese fighter when attacked despite the -1 evasion. A force of one milita, one artillery, and a CAG was moved into Indonesia. A fighter damaged the CAG, a heavy bomber the artillery, and a tactical bomber the milita. My milita then waltzed into the undefended province.

Its become a race of sorts now. While Japans fall appears to be inevtiable, Germany remains very strong. Vlale cut off the Panzer Group (8 super-tanks) but Svend will most likley break out. Nothing else can keep up with his tanks however, as his North Army group bogged down north of Moscow. Should Svend move on Moscow he should expect to hear from a few newly commisioned tank units :) All in all a pretty solid game as of now. It all comes down to wether or not vlale can hold out, and if I can get the support he needs to him. I learned an important rule about lend-lease this game, and its mainly my fault for Svends lack of supplies. I should have loaded him up with at least 60 in 1940 before Svends subs got nasty and Russia was still frozen. Ah well, its important lesson I now put into practice in all my games.
