A little out there...

Post by DuckofTindalos »

Has anybody ever given any consideration to the idea of modding the Battle of the Atlantic?

I don't even know if it's possible; I mean, it would require a new map, and a new OOB, obviously, but could it be done?

Just a thought...

You can't increase the size of the map. Even if that were not necessary, editing it is decidedly non-trivial.

Besides which, this game engine is completely inappropriate for modelling the Battle of the Atlantic.

Also, don't you think playing 4-5 years of "hunt the convoy" would be rather tedious? ;)

Very much so [:)] A Grand Campaign of 1-day turns in the Atlantic would certainly be enough to make both designers and players weep like small babies. But I was thinking more along the lines of the old Carriers at War, which had a number of shorter scenarios from the Battle of the Atlantic.

Call it a thought experiment. But just out of curiousity, why is the game engine inappropriate for the Atlantic?

The biggie is the modelling of submarines and ASW. I'm sure I don't need to go into detail.

Apart from that, Naval Search is too effective. You could make a Bismarck scenario and the ship wouldn't even make it out of the North Sea ...

Not to mention there is no "shadowing by cruisers" function.

Basically the tactical side of the game is just nowhere near up to it.

And how would you model the need for shipping? Especially unescorted shipping early in the war? I would sit in harbour with my AK with no hurry and wait for the escorts.

Of course... As I said, it was a thought experiment, brought on by pondering the now-cancelled 2by3 War in the Mediterranean project.

As things have turned out, I'm just as glad that this system will never again be inflicted on a wargaming subject.
Put my faith in the people
And the people let me down.
So, I turned the other way,
And I carry on anyhow.
