New Tank Types! Possum v5 coming soon!
New Tank Types! Possum v5 coming soon!
hello all
With the release of WIR 3.2, Arnold has semi-fixed the extra tank type slots. So I'm curently working on including all those extra tank types that I said I'd would have like to included.
when I say semi-fixed, the new tank type slots still have 3 minor "bugs"
1) The human player can not select a slot number greater than #69 for manual upgrade. Automatic upgradeing works fine however. I am using this feature to "impliment" Light tanks, by re-locating the light tanks to the new slots, this means that the German Pz-II batallions are stuck with driving Pz-II's for eternity, although you will get a new mark of Pz-II in '43. Also I have moved the Axis Minor tank clases to these slot's, so the Rumanian's , etc, will just have to wait until their obsolete R-35's, etc.. automatically upgrade.
2) The Icon for the new AFV's will appear after the infantry, recon, and assorted artillery icons.
This is because all of the infantry, Recon and artillery icons occupy slots 60 to 69.
3) For some reason, the Soviet AFV map icons use the icon of the AFV 5 lines down. eg a T-28 M40 in slot #75, will use the Icon of whatevet tank is in slot#80 for the on map summary screen. I can work around this by either leaving the +5 slot vacent except for duplicating the Icon no. of the sovet tank in question, or by simply spacing tanks that use the same icon 5 slots apart; or some combination thereon. This unfortunately cramps the number on new Soviet AFV's I can add in; and makes a mess of the order of the Soviet AFV pools screen. To make the Soviet AFV pool more tidy I've decided to insert code 99 for the obsolete Sovet tanks. This means that they will not appeare in the pools listing.
I'm currently testing to make sure that the automatic upgrades work properly.
to whet your appetite.
I've moved all the Soviet lend lease tanks, and the obsolete Soviet tanks down to the new slot's
and replaced them with the ZiS-30 lt TD, Su-76 assult gun, T-26 M39E (Still in production on June '41!!!)T-34 M41, KV-1 M41, and the BT-7M.
Also moved to the new slots were the Pz-IIf, R-35, and the Nashorn lt TD.
New tanks include the T-40 lt Tank, T-50, T-38 lt Tank, Matilda, Sherman 76, BT-2, S-35, Pz-35(t), L6/40 It lt tank, Pz-IIL lt Tank, JPz-4/48 med. TD, Su-76M Lt TD, and the Flammpanzer! (will automatically upgrade to Pz-IIIm)( I decided to include the Flammpanzer so the German 101st, 102nd, and 103rd Panzer Bn will not be stuck driving Pz-II's for eternity)
Some new factories have been added.
A factory in Genoa for L6/40's, a factory in Omsk for T-50's, and a factory in Leningrad for T-26 M39E's.
Also the KV-IE has had it's armour increased to 17
so as to make it a continued option to the KV-1S, instead of being made obsolete by the KV-1S

The BT7 and T26 are vital (in my opinion) to the health of the soviet tank force in your scenerio's. I use them heavily to refit the many T34 Bn's that come on line but have no T34's in the pool to draw on. There is no way soviet Tank production can flesh out the scores of T34 Bn's that exist or arrive as reinforcements in '41.
Also surrendered/shattered divs tend to come back with T34 B'ns instead of original(am i wrong in this?) there will be many tank divs hanging round with 0 Tnk Bn's that are pretty useless because of their stacking value.
The T28/T35/T37 and even BT5 i can understand but once again i consider the BT7 and T26 vital.
Will those two types be classified as obsolete?

Hello Loki
The BT-7 and BT-7A now Occupy slot #58 &59,and so are selectable for upgrade, or downgrade by the human player.
The T-26E now occupies slot #33 so is also selectable for upgradeing or downgradeing.
The BT-5, BT-2, and T-26 M40 are not selectabel
as they now have '99' in the cost code precluding them from the AFV pool listing. I made the decision to do this with these tanks as the soviets took them out of service ASAP and used them as artillery tractors or re-supply vehicles. The Soviets however seemed to think that the T-26E was a viable Infantry support tank untill '43 So I have made the upgrade of this tank the T-34 M43. Also the BT-7 and BT-7M now have the T-34 M43 as their upgrade too.
Nice to hear that you rely so much on the BT-7 and T-26, as historically the Soviets had to do just that untill late '42 when T-34 production finally caught up. That was one of the aims with this mod.; To force the Soviet player to continue using the BT-7 and T-26 as front line tanks untill late '42
However I'll go back and see If I can re-locate the T-26 M40 to a slot that won't mess with the pool order if I make it viewable in the pool.
one option would be to swap it with the T-50
and locate the T-50 in the untouchable slots instead. unfortunately that would mean that the vast pool of T-26M40's will morph into Su-76M's
And that historically never happend. also that the player can't then manually select T-50's either.

Loki, another thought.
Would starting the Reserve Cavalry Divisions Cavalry Tank regiments at full strength be a better option. at the present, I have them mobilizing with only 4 x BT-7. I was originally going to start them with a full compement of 64 x BT-7, as otherwize they will never reach full size
, but I didn't as I thought that this would be making those reserve units too strong.
Also originally I would have assumed that a reserve division would start with a full tank pool rather than having to go and draw from the general replacement pool. But then I thought, that drawing vehicles from the general pool would simulate the steady arrival of the Reservist crews resonably well.
I've also gone and did a re-look at the T-26 M40.
And I've decided to leave it where it is, as I discovered that even making it selectabe will bump the Sherman 76 off the bottom of the list, or it never appears on the list anyway, as there are too many AFV types ahead of it.

Hi Possum,
I'm doing exactly the same with soviet tanks as Loki does ( and in fact it is in PBEM against Loki - coinsidence ? ). Replacing T-34 with T-26, BT-5 and BT-7 was my first thought after looking at pools and divisions. So we are in mid august now and I have about 1000 T-34 in pool ready to go to good tank divisions.
So far your campaign is really good, I enjoy it very much, although I will loose Leningrad soon, right Loki ?

First off let me give praise for the work you are doing with your scenerios. Damn fine effort and i like your work so much they are the only versions of the game i play (aside from Ricky's 'Patriotic War' scenerio). I have 3 of your games running as of this time and have finnished 2 others. I Feel they are the best ballanced '41 scenerios for WiR that can be got.
In your V4 scenerio you seem to have decreased the number of Tank factories quite a lot (is that right? i'm just going from memory) and from what i can see so far (in the one V4 game i'm playing as soviet) , this is not too critical a handicap as the sovs had a big surplus of tanks in earlier versions that caused havock with the germans in blizzard.
May i suggest that if you cut the T26 to obsolete but keep the BT7 in V5 then maybe add say 2 more med tank factories to help with T34 production.
Regarding the reserve Cav divs. How about starting them at 1/2 strength (32) but add the excess to pool. That way, if they dont grow the extra BT7's can be used to fill in for tke T26's that will not be available.
Also the Sov training in V4 is just right, any lower and they'll blow away like leaves in the wind.
Once again, great work.

Ok, Nick lets do it this way : I withdraw from Dnepr basin as many armies as you withdraw from Leningrad area. Sounds fair ? <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">Originally posted by Lokioftheaesir:

Hello again Loki.
With regard to the factories, there has been no change in the factories from v1.
However somthing I'm thinking about its the addition of a small (say size 2) T-34 factory to Omsk, to come online in Jan-42. to simulate the start of production of T-34 components in the T-50
factory there. Historically production ot the T-50 stopped in Jan'42, as it was to labour intesive to build, and the factory re-tooled to make T-34 parts. Unfortunately to esure that the T-50 factory lasts untill Jan'42 , and the T-50 stays in service untill mid'43, I've made the upgrade of the T-50, the T-34 M43.
If I make the upgrade the T-34 M41, the factory converts instantly, and all of the T-50's vanish in the first month.
Actually the T-50 was never offically withdrawn from Soviet service, they kept on using them untill they all broke from lack of spare parts, they where that good. The Finn's loved them too. the Finnish army kept their captured examples in service untill 1954! Also the Finns went out of their way to retreive any abandoned T-50's they found. IIRC the Germans never encountered the T-50, as they were used only north of Leningrad. One wonders what the poor German tank crews would have made of encountering another @#$@$ indestructable Soviet Tank class.
The unoffical designation for them was "Baby KV"
Hope you enjoyed this trivia ramble....

Woops
I was comparing from memory the august'41 turn factories in a V4 game with the dec'42 factories in another (V2). I forgot about new factories comming on line. (smack my forehead with open palm)
Looking forward to V5
