To start a PBEM game:
- Select the campaign you want to play.
- Select "Secure PBEM game".
- Select the desired balance.
After accepting the setup you are prompted to define a password, after which the map appears and you can play as usual. At the end of the combat phase a prompt appears to save the game in a slot.

You then have to send the files SAVEx, SAVEx.MD and SAVEx.CD (with x = the letter of the slot you saved the game in) to your opponent who will:
- Copy these files into his WIR program directory.
- Select "Saved game" and "Secure PBEM game" from the setup screen to load the game.
- Enter his own password.
- Play, and send back to you the SAVEx, SAVEx.MD and SAVEx.CD files.

Other turns go in exactly the same way by exchanging the SAVEx, SAVEx.MD and SAVEx.CD. When opening the file each player is prompted for his/her password.

Note that when initiating a 1941 PBEM campaign in version 3.3 for the first time you'll have to fix a little bug before being able to play:
- Go to the WIR program directory.
- Start the editwir.exe program
- Type L (load data)
- Type X (complete scenario file)
- Type OBWIR as filename followed by Enter
- Type S (store data)
- Type X (complete scenario file)
- Type OBWIR as filename followed by Enter

You'll need to do this only once.
