Air Capacity Akagi and Kaga

Hello,

I always thought that these carriers carried 80 to 90 aircraft . I am trying to remember what it was stated at in the days of my 1/700 waterline ships and looking at the Janes fighting ships book . I always remember these two CV at higher capacities than in the game however , any comments?

According to Conways:

Akagi Speced out at 60 a/c increased to 91 a/c in 1938 (operational maximum 72).

Kaga Speced out at 60 a/c increased to 90 a/c (operational maximum 81, changed to 66 in 1942).

They seem to have carried 10-12 A/C in "broken down" condition to use as "spares" (they didn't carry crew for these A/C). I believe this practice has caused a lot of confusion over the years over their actual "capacity".

Doesn't work very well for the Japanese side. I had all my Kate squadrons reduced by 25% at the beginning of July 42 and saw an increase of a total of 3 Vals spread across all of the 8 fleet carriers. No increase in fighters at all. I think this rule is broken

I think this is a different rule - the carrier capacity increases, but the squadron sizes actually decrease later in the war. So, you have more room for the planes you don't have...[8|]

The 90 aircraft operational rating of Kaga and Akagi was (like the American Lexington and Yorktown classes rated sometimes at 100) based on 1930s airgroups. Smaller more numerous bi-planes.

During WWII with larger heavier aircraft they were rated for fewer planes.

on a different story: I read somewhere (forgotten where exactly else I would quote) that the Hosho's capacity was 20 a/c. In the game its 10. Is this the doubling for a/c transport ? What do your sources state ?

American Carriers had capacity based on flight deck space while Japanese carriers were rated based on hanger space. Both sides employed spares. The US for example did deploy 36 size fighter VF's for Santa Cruz but 5-6 of them were actually spares at the time.

Pettie (Kagun/Sunburst) gives good figures for true Japanese carrier capacity.
