Sea Lion?

Post by MikeBeach »

Please forgive the newbie'ness of my question. I just picked up WaW and so far it looks great. I have always wanted to see if Sea Lion would work (within the game, of course), but I'm afraid that either my skill level isn't there yet or my knowledge is lacking. I tried putting transports in the channel but wasn't able to keep them there. Also, I am missing some key points. How many transports in the game would be required for something like Sea Lion? If anyone has any suggestions or help to offer I would sincerely appreciate it.

Also, I am trying to come up to speed on the game itself. In particular production. I worked through the tutorials, but I am still confused, especially when it comes to research. Is there another tutorial lieing around or some step by step help?

Thanks,
Michael

there supposedly is one additional tutorial showing some of the finer points, but its still in the works by a forum member.

as far as sealion goes, yes its very possible. first of all transports have two numbers seperated by a slash. the right number indicates how much amphibious capacity it has. german transports have 3 per transport. each infantry unit costs 5 points and a tank costs 10. therefore you'll need two transports for an infantry and essentially 4 for a tank.

the trick to sealion is a large german air force. build up 5-6 tac air and some extra fighters and use those to soften up england for the actual amphib attack.

Kill all units in Scotland so that one infantry can invade. Then all other unit can strategy move other units into scotland. Then attack england from that.

Yes, I am amazed how easy it is to succeed in Sealion... vs the poor AI.

How about Human vs Human ?
I never played PBEM (but I will soon [:)])... is England strongly threaten ? Often invaded ?

Oh, it's always on the German player's mind! And it had better be in the WA player's mind too, or it just might succeed. Basically the WA has to cover 4 places: Gibralter, Suez, Scotland & England. It's tough early on because there's not many troops & poor ones at that! So if the German really wants a Sealion, it's tough to stop completely.
However, humans are WAY better at defending than the AI :)

The Human player is also willing to put his North fleet into harms way to stop it.

You mean that holding North See with a large surface fleet + fighter CAP will prevent axis landing in Scotland ?

It make sense, but I guess germans will put a lot of pressure there...

I've completed a sealion against four different PBEM opponents. one was against scotland, which was a complete waste (since I got trapped there the next turn) and the other three were straight toward england.

depending on how much the german player is willing to waste in that direction is the chance of capturing england. I suppose it really hurts the WA, but I'm not 100% certain its a game winner. russia is extremely strong if the germans have devoted so much towards england.

If your playing a game against me you'll be too busy trying to peel me off of the Italian Coast. Then again, I'm a rather aggressive Western Allies player.

It's totally worth it to capture England after France is captured. Actually it's vital, get them out of the way before war with Russia. Another advantage is the WA will have a much harder time breaking into the european continent. They won't have the safe base of England to launch an offensive against France.
Pft,damn the aircraft, full speed ahead....WAIT!....
