How to make sure a certain unit receives supply?

Post by bradfordkay »

I'm sure that this has been covered before, but a search under "unit supply" gives Zero results and a search under "supply" runs out of results before it gets to this question.

How can you make sure that all units in a hex (or any specific unit) receive enough supplies. I have a situation where Bataan has about 10 times the supply that it requires, but two units (including Corregidor B Fortress!) are themselves undersupplied. USAFFE HQ has been in Bataan for about four weeks, and supply has been no problem. I've even managed to sneak a couple of supply ships in.

I noticed this because, once more, Japanese transports have been able to sail straight into Manila Bay without interference from the Bataan CD unit. The first couple of passages were intercepted by PT TFs, so I guessed that maybe the CD didn't fire for fear of hitting US ships. I then sent the PTs to Manila with a response distance of 0, and still the CD unit did not fire. When I checked the CD unit itself, it shows it has 110 supply of 115 needed, even though there has been more than enough supply in the hex for at least three weeks.

So, my question is, how can you make sure that all units get the supply they need? I would have thought that three weeks with about 10 times the required supply should have done it.

You can't. It is controlled by the AI and because of this, it is basically broken. Only thing you can do is move your Command HQs there.

In India I have a new approach. I start at Diamond Harbor and move SEAC to every base from there to Ledo. Then back again. I now have 16-19000 supply points in each base. You have to keep it moving, or it will suck the supplies back up.

Rinse and repeat when they get low.[:D]

Move a HQ there. Can also used for moving supply in Home Islands.
Gumma is dry of supply and industry is not reapairing, so I moved an HQ there.

Nice try guys, but I already have sent the USAFFE HQ there. It has been there for four weeks, so I feel that I have done everything possible. I noticed that it was only that particular day that the Corregidor CI (not B, as I had posted) unit was under supplied. Every day before and after that particular day it had plenty of ammunition.

In subsequent days, it has continued to refrain from firing at the japanese TFs that glibly sail by on their way to Manila. My PTs have put up a valiant effort, getting sunk (all six) while sinking about three transports, a PG and an MSW. However, that doesn't make up for the lack of response from the Corregidor CI CD unit.

Since I am using Andrew Brown's map, I suppose that could be the problem. Does anyone know if the CD units are hardwired to respond to a particular hex coordinate, or just the hex where they are located. I suppose that I could test by finding the original map hex coordinate for Bataan, taking over the Japanese side and sneding a TF to that location to see if the Bataan Corregidor CI unit will respond, but something seems fishy here.

Hi, just re-activating this thread to see if there has been any progress made in this area through the different patches.

My main problem is Gumma, the largest aircraft production centre that Japan has. Because its inland, its very hard to keep at the necessary supply levels and hence factories that make aircraft upgrades like Tojo's, Oscar II's etc., don't repair and you have no aircraft avaialable for arriving squadrons or upgrades.

I've tried the idea of moving the Home Islands HQ from Tokyo to Gumma, but while it starts the factories up for a few turns, the supply drawn to Gumma is soon gone and everything shuts down again. In addition, moving the HQ to Gumma shuts down the production of replacements for all the understrenghth base forces that arrive in Tokyo.

Anyone come up with a better method yet?

Having the same problem myself in Kyoto. Home Islands HQ at the base should do the trick. The problem is an overall shortage of supply in the Home Islands. Turn off all port, airfield and fortification expansion, stop repairing damage at other factories, slow down on loading up supply for shipment to the front, set LCUs building up at Tokyo to "do not receive replacements". Build up the total level of supply in the HI, and supplies should start to flow to the HIHQ. You might also try a big air transport operation to Gumma from Korea; there are bunches of Topsys in Kwangtung....

I've read a claim that HQ fragments i.e. a few support squads from an HQ air-transported to a location will attempt to pull 20k of supplies to that location. Is that true? Can't test it myself at the moment - I've been banned from playing WitP by she who must be obeyed [8|] - gosh, pregnant women and their moods ...

Maybe you should have spent more time playing in the first place and then you wouldn't have the problem now[:D][:D][:D].

Very interesting idea...marketing WitP as the ultimate contraceptive device.....

"Ladies are you tired of your man putting his sweaty hands all over you and continually seeking sex? Does he have any interest in history or gaming? Then War in the Pacific is just the thing for you!! Buy this for your man and free yourself from his libido! Have plenty of time to talk on the phone, buy shoes and spend his money while he turns into a vegatable in front of his CRT. An additional benefit is that with the decrease in his physical activity, he will probably die sooner and you can collect on that insurance policy sooner than you thought possible!"

Watch for Matrix to take up ads in Cosmo and Women's Day magazines next month....
Sing to the tune of "Man on the Flying Trapeze"
..Oh! We fly o'er the treetops with inches to spare,
There's smoke in the cockpit and gray in my hair.
The tracers look fine as a strafin' we go.
But, brother, we're TOO God damn low...

ROTFLMAO!!! [:D][:D][:D]

But well, in my case it doesn't work that way. She does not tolerate my hobby even when not pregnant, but experience has told me that when pregnant, she will become more and more tired and groggy with each passing month, thus sleeping more often and longer, which in turn gives me time to sneak to the 'puter to play. This effect lasts well through the nursing period. Did work fine with the first kid - so rinse and repeat [;)].

Let me see...<gets out calculator>...I think that means that you will end up with around 22 children at that rate! You could have two full American Football teams of just your offspring! OUTSTANDING LST!

Though, I think that your wife would charge you with "assault with a friendly weapon" anytime you come at her after the 3rd kid.....[:@]

To go back to the topic, not that the interlude is not funny ... [;)]

Try moving 30 or more level bombers to the base in question. Miraculously about 20,000 supplies will move there from who knows where.

But ...

LCUs will always spend about 1 day in 3 low on supply. If you read the manual it says that they will only attempt to draw supply from a nearby base every 2 or 3 days. Plus, a 5% or so shortage will not greatly affect the unit anyway. As I understand it there is some sort of linear drop off in effectiveness from 100% (full supply) to 25% (no supply).

Shortage of supply is not the reason the CD unit at Bataan didn't work. That must be something else.

Agreed, except that we play soccer over here. And I'm not sure about the charges. She's French - l'amour toujours, compris? [;)]

In my expirience, it's not how it works. But that may have been just some jinx & bad dice rolls.
I've noticed considerable drop in calculated assault value (shown in land combat animations) when the LCU supply is in red, even by a single digit. So if I don't have total LCU supremacy, I usually wait with deliberate/shock attacks when supply engine gives my units enough supply, lest I get a bloody nose.
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage.
