Melting of the Arctic: MkXIV vs. ArcticFire (Allied View)

Post by MkXIV »

Hello everyone!

Note this is a ArcticFire free zone... which is notible in that in a few months it may be the only place he hasn't captured yet. [8|]

Artic Fire and I are starting a new 1.5 game scen 15 both sub doctrines are off, dec 7th surprise on, and Historical turn off, although the only thing we agreed to do is that Artic gets to tweak his PH attack and the composition of some of the landings and I get to sortie my subs and adjust ships at sea. The allied player really needs to get his subs out of dodge because if they get hammered in the PI in port on turn 1.... well your war just got alot longer.

I'll post more of my intentions after I see how turn 1 goes. I have Lex and Enterprise racing toward Wake, hopefully we can bag a few ships in the landing there, after that thier movment will depend on what KB does. Also if wake survives dec 7th, I'll pull VMF-211/1 off and onto the carrier, it makes a nice addtion to the Long Island when she becomes availible. My basic plan right now is to play brave Sir Robbin and run like the hounds of hell were after me. I will look for small openings to hit and run but basically I want to build my preimeter and hold until late 1942, of course this is all easier said then done.

This is my first AAR and I am looking forward to it, I am not sure what format I will end up with. I welcome any comments on either the AAR or my battle plans.
Hang on this could get bumpy!!

I'll post more once I get a look at how bad of a mess my first turn was.

As Chevy Chase's brother-in-law said in Vegas vacation "I haven't seen a beating like that since someone put a bunch of bannas down my pants and turned a monkey loose!" The first turn is always bad for the allies but that doesn't make it any easier to watch.

Well We got stuck with the dreaded replay bug on the 1st turn [:@][:@][:@]
It was easy to spot because in my replay I saw Wake being held but when I open the turn I saw the Jap flag flying over it[:(]. I think I saw some tips to advoid it. If anyone has any advice please let me know!

December the 8th sees the exodus of shipping from the PI begin, I hope I did a fairly good job of spreading them out I want to make him work for any ships he gets! Force Z heads south I am toying with the idea of using it to crash the party at one one of his SRA landing sights but I have to get a better handle on where his carriers are first because getting them sunk by kates isn't going to help me at all. West coast shipping is on hold until I get a feel for how he is going to use his subs, if he attempts to blockade the west coast I will need to form convoys with ASW forces attached. I may also bring back 1 or to squadrons of PBY's from PH because I have a slight surplus of them for the amount of sea I have to look over (albeit that all squadrons are down to 2 or 3 planes after the PH attack). In the Morth Pacific I am planing to consoldate to a few bases and build them up and make it risky for him to take if he tries, otherwise I will pretty much leave this theather alone, although I may send a AS up there to base some subs closer to his home waters.

RE: Melting of the Arctic: MkXIV vs. ArcticFire (Allied View)

Post by MkXIV »

Well the replay error gave me another bug. It showed Davao Falling but I am glad to say that we repulsed the attack and we are holding on there.

In other News BAD DAY FOR MY SUBS!!! I lose 3 inculding 2 dutch [:(]. I really need those boys and getting sunk for nothing in return isn't going to cut it. At least O19 gets an AK during landings. KB hung around and pounded on PH again sinking the West Virginia, hopefully he he leaves now, as I think I can save what is left. I take some comfort in knowing that he has lost a confirmed 67 carriers planes in just 2 days, meaning his pool won't have many pilots left when he rearms with more planes. My carriers hit him at wake and I believe I got one CL and a DD at least. Hopefully I can bag on or two more, but I won't hang around because I am not about to trade a US CV for an ak or two and this point in the game.

Well I lost the combat report but basically I sunk one of his PC when it got to close to one of my AO's that the John D Ford was escorting. and he butchered my PT boats in the PI, on another note I only lost 2 planes to his 9. While I do not count of this ratio every day, I do hope that I can at least keep on the positive end of the stick

Pretty much more of the same, my Brit pilots couldn't hit the broad side of a AP when bombing at least the Dutch and making him bleed a little.

Upon reading this I have one suggestion to make. If you have the time don't post a combat report but rather write a short summary of what happened in a specific theater that day. Burma, DEI, Philippines, Solomons, SoPAC, Centpac.. etc.

It's much easier to read [:)] Ofcourse one can always paste the more important bits from combat reports.

But if you don't have the time to do it then please just delete the

"4 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet"

lines from combat report, doesn't add much really.

His losses of kates from the KB will be hard to replace. He may not understand that but will in feb unless he has a mogomi training program in place, and he is being guts with his claudes off the Ryiaosp. You will be able to take advantage of this later on.

I have to agree, I'll add up his confirmed losses when I get the next turn back but I believe he is already pushing 80 carrier and float planes, so that leaves only 20 in the pool, plus the 10 a month he gets. Now while this isn't overly critical, I have seen IJN players take heavier losses then this, but right now I am getting my lunch handed to me and I will take all the good news I can get.

I need to get my subs more into action, so far I have gotten 3 sunk and have only inflicted to damaged AK's and a sunk AP with them. The new spotting rules are taking some getting used to I will get better at knowing how to the deploy them as the game goes on.

Speaking of subs I need to find more of his, because as of right now I think I have tabs on a total of 3! I hope this improves as my PBY strength is rebuilt, my PBY units are only 3-4 planes a peice luckly there are a fair amount of replacements for these.

Slow and steady wins for the allies. I need to stay calm and position, build, and train for 4 to 5 months before anything else. I must keep reminding myself of this!

Well here are the stats, he has lost (navy A/C only)
1 Alf
2 Jakes
20 Zeros
21 Vals
39 Kates [:)]

Now I agree he has gotten a VERY good return on his investment, but still that adds up to 83 planes in less then a week. So at least he should take an exp. hit when he his carriers reload.

I am going to follow a suggestion on AAR format and give a brief Explanation on each area per turn (if any action occured)

West Coast
Forming up supply convoys and preparing to begin shipping supplys out, I have also formed some ASW TF and have a good air serch network setup

North Pac:
Reajusting forces, quiet so far

Pearl:

Still trying to put out the fires and patch the holes. I have begun picking up the out lying BF as these will be relocated to other Cent Pac bases as reinforcements.

PI:

Just a big stink'n mess[:(]

I messed up in one area big time, I tried to get the AP and AK's an escort each to ward off subs, this actually worked once as I DCed a sub that attempted an attack on a AK. but what has happened for the most part is that I slowed down the escorts so they got hit as well by the air attacks, so I have now detached the escorts and told them to "Run Forrest Run!" Plus it gives him more targets to chase (less chance of getting a 2 for 1)

China:

I am completely lost as to what to do here, although it hasn't hurt me too bad yet, I have a feeeling it will bite me in the end.

Burma:

So far so good, I am getting kicked around (what else is new) but I think he is a bit behide schedule so thats all the allies can hope for here.

India: Defenses are coming along nicely, losts on units to move.

SOPAC:
He is moving into the Gilberts but not much I can do about that right now,
Quite otherwise but I have a PBY net up to get a heads up view if he decides to head that way.

Ozland:
I am toying with the idea on leaving New Gueania open.... It takes alot of effort (and dead pilots and sunk ships) to defend, and I may have a better chance of making him come to me on the mainland. plus All the Aus. LCU require PP's to move so any forces sent to NG have to come from the US and that takes away from SOPAC's defense.

Post by MkXIV »

well today saw more slaughter on the high seas as his surface forces and air assets pound my fleeing ships, this turn they come under so LRCAP so I might get to save a few more, I should have put up a sub net to keep him from chasing my forces this far south, oh well always an idea for the next game.

BTW his Pete pilots are DEADLY!! I am glad they only drop 60kg's but that have like a 75% hit rate, oh yes I promise you I will get those CS's, everyone of the buggers!!

We got confirmation on another AK lost at wake, this gives me 2 AK 1 DD and 2 CL sunk for the loss of one SBD, I can live with that!

RE: Melting of the Arctic: MkXIV vs. ArcticFire (Allied View)

Post by MkXIV »

Well things are begining to quiet down a little after the wholesale slaughter of the past couple of days. Luckly I managed to save some of my ships, and they are beginning to make their way to the rear in order to haul supplys and materials back to the front.

Pearl Harbor:
Most of the mess has been cleaned up, in the near future the cripples are going to begin the trek home to the west cost. I am still short on PBY's but this problems gets a little better each day.

North Pac:
Waiting for shipping to bring up the North Pac HQ

Central/South Pac:
Awating reinforcments

Southwest/Oz:
Troop reallocations going nicely I believe if given a little time I should be ok here, unless he makes a HUGE effort, but then again any time in 1941/42 Japan can take it if they want it.

Malaya:

The steady retreat continues, I was able to pull most of my aircraft out however so that they might torment the devil out of Artic at a later date. Well that or die in droves to the Zero blitz [:(]

India: Troops and convoys continue the massive realinment. In about a week to 10 days east India will be alright on supplys for a while.

Home Islands: A sub net is taking shape for when the first round of ships come home

Right now waiting to see what happens....

By the way KB has simply vanished I think it may have gone back to Japan or maybe a base in the Marshalls?

Ok, I don't have the replay here at work so I will do this from memeory right now. SS-S36 get lined up on CVE Hosho north of the PI and.... missed![:(]. Boy that would have been a nice feather in the cap! I had Argonaut in Kajawlin (SP?) to lay some mines, while laying her presents an ASW aircraft droped a bomb on her, I think she'll live but she is going to need some yard time, and Artic now knows that I have mines there, I was hoping to ruin a AP's day with them, I was originally going to mine Wake but the shipping has dried up there for the moment I figured Kajawlin would be move active. In other news he smack down of them shipping in the west is slowing down, at least those that made it seem safe now.

RE: Melting of the Arctic: MkXIV vs. ArcticFire (Allied View)

Post by MkXIV »

I am a few daysd behide, but not much is going on. I had a supply convoy a few days out of Midway when out of nowhere I got the oddest sighting report, first one of my subs shot at and missed, a Tanker next a PBY spotted a convoy consisting of a reported 2 CA and 3 AP! Now at first sight I would have thought it was a invasion force headed Midway (which it might have been) but there is no sign of carrier aircraft in the region, plus it was reported headed west (!?) and now today is has vanished again, my guess is that it is in fact a Midway invasion force but we will need to see.

On another note I am going to hold all cripples in Pearl until they can at least make 3 knots, that way it won't take till 1943 for them to make the voyage to SF.
