Looking to Buy

Post by nix »

Good day to all. I stumbled across this game on the Wargamer forum and hoped to get some insight on it. I have read some of the available reviews and some of the posts on the forums. Things look pretty straightforward, and as an occasional player of TOAW I'm guessing I should have little trouble getting started.

One thing that concerns me is something I read in one of the reviews. It stated there is no combat bonus for flanking or attacking from the rear. I'm curious if this has been modified in any of the patches or if this is a hard-coded feature?

Can anyone comment on this or the game in general to cement my decision to buy? Thanks!

Nix,

That's correct - this is a platoon scale game so each counter is generally 5-10 vehicles. Most platoon-scale games have to assume that a platoon will, in the contest of reasonable space and time scale, be able to adjust to cover flanks or rear as threats emerge. You will more often see flanking or rear bonuses in tactical 1:1 scale games where an individual vehicle is involved or in scales and periods where formations are more important. With that said, in same hex combat flank and rear shots happen.

What you are concerned with here is flanking and rear attacks on a larger scale. If you've deployed your company such that only one platoon is covering an approach route from the right and the main enemy attack comes that way, you have just been flanked and may be rolled up/destroyed piecemeal even though you may not have had any flanked vehicles on the lower tactical scale.

Regards,

I guess when I consider we are discussing vehicles as opposed to dismounted infantry, flanking would be less a threat. Same with the size. I guess when I thought "platoon", I was thinking a platoon of men not machines. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

Will anyone who has played the game care to give me some input? I'm guessing things have changed considerably from when the online reviews came out. Especially considering there have been two patches.

Well when I first bought TOAW , I was overhelm ...and uninstall the same day and sell it off ..that is the biggest mistake i have made ..TOAW has to be the best wargames out there , now slowly I am getting into the game and enjoy it very much ...

Ok back to FPG , is a easy wargame to get into but still have the depth to satisfy the hardcore out there ...and with endless support given to this game ...it can only mean one thing ..is going to be near 100 % perfect wargame [:)] just play the game unpatch and patch you will notice such a huge improvement between them

See the screenshots and read AAR , it will give some insight in the game ....almost all earlier reviews has commented on the AI but be assure things has much improve with the patches ...

So go ahead and buy this and dont make the same mistake I make with TOAW which I have lost numbers of good & fun wargaming years

With that said , do I get a free game for my buddy [:D] ?

I think this is one of the best "easy to learn" WWIII stragegy games. It doesn't overwhelm you with detail yet you definitely get a feel for the tactics needed for Nato vs WP warfare. Its a straight up wargame, no economics or research trees. I never play PBEM but this game has me hooked (I haven't played the computer since I first bought the game). Just look in the old posts for deeper insight, but I play this a lot more than WaW.
