Why have we never seen ET??
Got this idea from the Encouraging Sign thread which went way OT pretty quick with discussions about the wise ole Master Yoda and why we as humans think we are indestructible...
1. In movies, why we ( most ) always win - well... movie'd be pretty boring if the aliens wiped us out in the first 20-30 minutes of the movie!! [:D][:D]
2. Why have we never been contacted by intelligent life?? ( I know a few people in Ark who swear that they've been probed ! ) I've read a couple of really good Sci-Fi books that try and answer that - but bottom line - there comes a point in a civilizations "conscience" that they no longer evolve on a physical plane but more a spiritural or metaphysical plane - what the hell that means for us, I don't know...
Also - some civilizations are so war like that they eventually wipe themesleves out ( probably our fate! - look at our 'games'!!! )
3. Is there a limit to a civilizations ability to evolve? It there a limit?? And if so - what is it and how close are we to it?
4. Finally, from a religios standpoint - most organized religions of today and the past have a concept of "armageddon" - is there some deep biological reason for this belieft - is it hardwired into our conscience to believe that this will eventually happen because it will??
Maybe God finally has enough of us and moves on...
OT - on a lighter note - my favorite baseball player of all time was Ozzie Smith and my favorite WWII plane was both the B-25 and the P-61... How bout yall???

Well, according to our newspapers and books, we have been visited by aliens.
So that means these alien civilizations have evolved over millions of years; they have developed an advanced and sophisticated technology, mathematics, language, culture, and writing; they have built spaceships and travelled millions upon millions of light years; and when they finally reached earth, what did they do?
These advanced, intelligent visitors from another planet have spent all their time:
1) Tipping over sleeping cows;
2) Making crop circles in farmers' fields; and
3) Kidnapping and probing "red necks" from the outback.
On second thought, what on earth could we possibly learn from creatures that spend all their time doing these types of activities?? [:D]
It's almost as if these alien civilizations have sent us spaceships full of their version of Jim Carrey... [:D]
Or, earth has been caught up in some Alien version of "Candid Camera" or "Bloopers and Practical Jokes"...

Well think about it now, if we were an advanced race, what do you suppose we would do for entertainment? Things that would be funny to us might be to play with a lesser race like us humans (unlike Trek and Sci-fi shows which show us being totally civilized far into our future and messing with another race would be "against the prime directive). Tip over cows, make crop signs, and harass rednecks cause they are just too ignorant for anyone to believe they actually saw a real alien.
Now on the subject of armageddon, history shows us that everything comes and goes. It appears that the cycle of things is nothing lasts forever. We as humans MAY advance fast enough to escape the coming doom, whatever it may be, polar ice caps melting or a giant asteroid from outer space colliding with our world. I personally can't believe we are immune from space debris like an asteroid bypassing us forever, chance plays a factor and that chance will come again someday. Then there is the super nova of our sun that should eventually happen as well. While we might escape total destruction from polar ice caps melting and giant asteroids by moving underground or underwater if we haven't already moved to outerspace, the super nova is something nothing will escape except by space travel to another world in another galaxy in another time in another place within the universe.
Now my question would be, how can we know 100% for sure aliens really don't live among us today, perhaps they can emulate our features, or even take over our bodies or minds, though I've never seen any giant bean sacks being passed around my neighborhood, heh, doesn't mean it didn't happen somewhere in a desolate place where a small tribe of individuals could have been emulated without anyone knowing.
The reason I sort of believe in aliens and superior technology is really since the Roswel episode look how fast our technology HAS advanced, just within the last 55 years???!! Don't you find that interesting that we've become so very smart in just 55 years and for almost 6000 years we used thunder jars and outdoor toilets? heh Then again it's very possible alien encounters came in the 19th century as well with the industrial revolution, things since then have really advanced at a pace never before seen in the history of mankind on a year by year basis.
Another theory is perhaps we have been being advanced over the centuries by Aliens at various intervals of time. And for some reason at this given point in time they feel we do "need" to advance faster than before, and my theory here is that there really IS an asteroid moving this way they already know about and they are/have given us the technology to either prevent it or escape it.
Heh, I love Sci-Fi, it opens so much up to imagination that in theory could be true, though not openly proven. Something I've noticed along with becoming indifferent to violence on tv and movies, we are also being presented with a lot of Sci-Fi encounters with all types of races, faces and attitudes. So, if an alien did appear in your front yard, would you really be scared??

RE: Why have we never seen ET??
Another possibilty. The solar system lies in a fairly remote area of the galaxy on the outer edge of one of the great spiral arms. The local star systems are scattered, the nearest being some 4 light years away. If an advanced civilization was to look, this might be one of the least likely areas to investigate.
There is also the possibilty that interstellar travel is simply impossible over distances outside a local group of stars. Nothing can actually move at the speed of light except light itself (it would require an infinite amount of energy), wormholes and the like are theories and the amount of energy requires to "open" them would, in theory, require tapping a great percentage of the sun's total energy, etc., etc. It may just be possible that we are it in this area of the galaxy and we never have been, nor ever will be, visited.
That does not rule out the possibility, however, that we may someday colonize local star systems and discover other, less advanced, alien life.
Or maybe I'm wrong and we're all aliens, planted here as an experiment by some really advanced race that likes to dabble in such things.

RE: Why have we never seen ET??
Then again we could very well be a greater beings "computer game" heh we might actually be "Civilization" the origional version in "slow motion".
Mans own intelligence now has created a sort of simulation of life, we can be placed in a god mode and control these digital lives, we send them to their deaths time and time again. I think TROPICO gave me my biggest feeling of god-mode, it had births and deaths and you could even name all your citizens and they continued their digital bloodlines all the way to the point till one of them finally overthrew you.
And this new SPORES I've been reading about appears is going to take the god mode to an ultimate new level, each of us can create a race/civilization from tiny ameoba to space travelers, and when we are online it will "automatically" upload our race/civilization into a main file and others will encounter us when playing their version of the game. I think that is going to be really interesting and fun, it's from the maker of THE SIMS btw.
And from the sounds of it you can design your race anyway you want to, 3 arms, 1 leg, walks on it's tail, lol it sounds like the skies the limit on what you can create and attempt to bring it from the beginning of life to outer space. I can't wait myself.

ohhh Boyyy [X(][X(][X(][X(][X(]
The Sun is never going to "SUPER NOVA" that only occurs in stars that are a certain mass and the sun is under that mass point, something like Antares through and other massive stars will.
The Sun however will expand to a redish giant when it switchs to helium burning
which will be hotter internally and so heat will expand the outer parts which will cooland so the red color, at that point Mercury, venus,Earth will be within the sun with Mars now much closer to the sun... that will only last a short time then the sun will blow off its outer layers, it might be akin to a nova which is different from a SUPER nova, and the sun will end as an dwarf star slowly turning into a brown, cold dwarf.
Now as to aliens visiting and advancing us... Maybe there are Cylons out there and original Battlestar Galactica and galactica 1980 is true [:'(][:'(][:'(]
and their out there advancing us slowly to point we will meet them and be told of the deadly cylons [:D][:D]

I dont think aliens would want to contact us, atleast not yet. Just 60 years ago we tried to kill ourselves twice. Huge world wars millions wiped out. After that theres been several wars more, millions more died.
We wouldnt be trustful enough. Theres really nothing they can offer us so there is no point in making a contact. We are just too dangerous to be allowed to have high techs/spread to the galaxy.
Its interesting how the amount of UFO-sightings escalated after ww2. Maybe slaughtering 50 million and blowing up the atombomb caught their interest.
I think we need to be peaceful (and properly so aka no religous fanatics/remnants of coldwar/ etc africa cleaned up) for few hundred of years before they even think of allowing us among whatever is out there.

The program "Dr. Who" is actually a documentary...
The Daleks will return and try to "Exterminate" us...
I feel the coming movie "The War of the Worlds" is a coming preview of that conflict... [:D]

I think those UFO's were from Tau Ceti, They expected us to still be riding horses, with swords and shields, one UFO lost its master plan for Earth and turtledove got hands on it and wrote the world war series [:'(]
Thing is instead of invading us like they were going to and as turtle dove
wrote from the plans he got of theirs, they got a real good look at Us and decided to head back home and leave us crazy tosevites to kill ourselves off..
They plan to return in another 50 years, decontinimate the earth and colonize it, after we do kill ourselves off, they have plans to dig up stuff of ours and send to their home and other worlds as curositys to be looked at, the crazy lifeform of man that blew itself up..

If we are not alone we might as well be almost alone:
http://www.ufoevidence.org/documents/doc1352.htm
It may be ET is a little more rare than we think. For a couple subjective reasons.
The Universal speed limit of C is keeping most from making the trip.
And, Frank Drakes equation for "how common intelligent life is in the galaxy" is flawed as he now admits as steady elliptical planetary oribits are difficult to form. Well without planets criss-crossing and smashing into each other.
One thing, our class G2 sun and its Jupiter flashes is like waving a life over here sign. I'm sure we've been noticed.
Edit: For the optimist the betty hill alien star map is intriguing:

RE: Why have we never seen ET??
A common mistak about the speed of light is assuming because you cant reach it you cant go OVER it.
You can, you just cant reach THE speed of light, but you can jump over it, there are particals that cant go -below- the speed of light for the same reason(theory as far as I know), the key is finding a way to jump over the light barrier onto the other side.
I will see if I can find the artical I read about that, it gets into some pretty heavy calc.

I have seen Entertainment Tonight a few times, but to me it's just like A Current Affair w/ celebrities.
RE: Why have we never seen ET??
So many people claiming so many different things! Honestly, I've lost all credibility in those scientist or speculators who claim intelligent life out their. Or who claim the existence of BIGFOOT, Lochnest Monster, or any other unproved theory.
Actuallly, all these things have a proper place (entertainment), the best home for them is Hollywood,
Occasionally I listen to Art Bell in the late hours as I drive my big rig down the road. For all the speculation made where is the proof. Everyone today wants proof for beliefs expressed. Why should not the same requirements be made when speaking about alleged aliens, show me one alien that exist outside the realm of the fantasy world of Hollywood!
