I'm sorry I was so pissed I forgot to thank those of you who have been sympathetic and did not enjoy the execution.

Thanks

Why do you insult me? Why do you insult the other players?

All what we do, is to react to your post!

When you post here, you must acept the criticism.

This does seem to have gotten very nasty - don't know why. Surely we can agree to differ?

I think the debate is a valid one and don't see why if you come down on one side of the fence rather than the other it should get so heated.....

700 hits on this and 42 replies, about half of them negative - so the silent majority just reads and passes on. I wouldn't take it too personally mc3744 - thats a lot of people not coming out and having a go at you.

Well... unless as Japan you have won the game by end of 1942, then you know the Allies are going to win. So going by that every Jap player may as well quit on 1st Jan 1943, assuming they didnt catch the autovictory.

Thats cruel on the Allied player though, who has just sat through an entire year of getting slapped around while looking at CV Essex and drooling. In 1943 it is the Allied player who gets to plan the offensives, and the Japanese player who does what he can to blunt them - the roles are reversed.

Why do the Japanese players feel like they have to win by 4-1 early victory points to win. Even if they miss that margin there is still an entirely different game to play. It is called the defensive battle to delay the allies from getting their margin. In reality this game is two games in one, reversed for each player, a cat and mouse game of offensive power and conquest and a game of defensive strongholds and keeping them guessing while delaying and making payment costly for advances.

Wow, to have stopped the Japanese Juggernaut early against tow opponents and forcing them to resign is impressive. Have you considered posting an AAR. I would be very interested to know how you play and glean pointers from your games. Great job! [:D]

Your not suggesting that I might actually know what i'm doing? Can we get a house rule banning PT boats?[;)]

This is war, be it virtual. If you break your opponent's will power, it doesn't matter what year of the war you're in, the status of VPs, or the state of military power. If he thinks he's broken, he is.
The problem I found playing the Japanese is that you catch the samething they did historically (I can conqurer the WHOLE world).
Buzz!
Wrong answer. I think we tend to forget that not many pbems have made it into the later war years (it is a new game after all). While the Japanese can't win, both sides can still lose. The longer the war drags on, the more losses the Japanese can inflict the possibility that the war goes into 46 increases. However most of us don't see that or can't comprehend it. As more games slip past 1943 I think we'll see a change in the players. The Japanese players will realize they can actually do better then the historical Japanese and drag out the war and drive up the losses until one side sues for peace, which was their initial intentions.
I feel for the poster who started this thread, I don't think he deserves harsh replies or judgements. Playing the Japanese might appear to be a cakewalk, it's not. If you don't handle it carefully and with patience, it'll break.
Back to my point though, if you break the human spirit, you've won.
It's not just a Japanese problem either, go read the Wobbly thread (my hero!). That man took a unbelieveable pounding and eventually reached the breaking point (he ran off and got married!....that's the ultimate broken spirit [:D] ). Seriously though, time will help to create even better players as they learn their lessons in the hard knock school of wargames.

Sincerely and respectfully

I thought I just add to this tread. Well I think opponents should discuss before what should happen if things go wrong, because it sucks when an opponent just quits because things are going bad for them.

People spend alot of time and effort in planning and getting a buzz on doing things that hasnt been done before, and finding that the games ends sooner than later is just annoying.
If people want to try new stuff, then let them try on the AI. because it sucks when people try on others and then just quit when the game goes all wrong for them.

When I play, I play to the end. If Im japs I play until all my fleet is gone. If Im allies, then I play until Japan is defeated. So far Ive played many games, and I can say they are many type of characters out there. Some play for fun, some play serious, and some are just big babies that will just quit when things goes bad and last are those people that start scenario 15 games that havent got a clue on how the game works. But hey they start games anyway and when you playing those people and you say hey im 'winning' and you think that u are a great player but then you find out that this person has no idea WTF they doing....... its even worst.

Just had a thought maybe we could start a winners thread where one could post the result of his latest PBEM just the end result. You know so and so wins against so and so
no details just names.[:)]

Yes it would but you could post those games started and then for some reason stopped by one of the players. You know if you have to call it quits for one reason or another your opponent gets to call it a victory. I know there can be many reasons to call a game off family matters, employment concern`s, death, one`s own, comes to mind as a good excuse. A scoreboard if you like the one who has to pull out has to call it a loss. Hmmm
maybe Matrix will award a prize to the player with the most win`s to his credit[:D]

How about the new Campaign Game which starts on 8 Dec with historical results from 7 Dec? That seesm to have potential for "realistic" start whatever that is. Of course, The Japanese players may resent the conserevative historical situation into which they are hardwired, but the PH Raid results aren't bad.

mc3744, sorry if I started all the negative comments and I didn't mean to piss you off. I don't think restarting the game after just four days of play would be a big thing and I think you did the honorable thing by posting your defeat on a thread in the forum. I can more than understand your reason for resigning and I probably would have broached the subject with my opponent if I had been in the same position. I think anyone who has read your AAR knows that you are a good opponent and a decent player.

Hi, I have lost most of my CV in several games and it is not even 43 yet. No intention of quiting. The objective changes after a disaster. Now with less, you must do more. Even more fun playing then before.

Hey Mogami,

I hear the US forces in Iraq are looking for a good public spoke person.[:D]

:) still doesnt beat my record...I lost KB on december 8. ;).

How in the world did that happen?! [X(][&:]

Rob is Very creative. [:D][8|]

And to the original poster. It is really tough to take a large loss as Japan in the opening days of the
war. As Allies, I usually try to offer a redo and/or restart if my Japan opponent has a serious problem.
I do not care what he did to bring it upon himself, I just hate to see all the work go down the drain.

When I was young I went to a school in another part of the country where the chief occupation at 'playtimes' was for groups of lads to patrol the yard asking you which team you supported. There were and probably still are only two teams up there in the North - so you had to answer Celtic or Rangers. if you got it wrong, which I invariably did, you got beaten up.

So I hit upon a brilliant idea, I said, I support Newcastle (my home team and not even in the same country now!) and guess what - they both beat me up!

This whole thread has turned into a bit of a position statement one - rather akin to what happened in Europe in the Middle Ages - choose the wrong response and you get burned at the stake - or worse! (and there was worse)

Swift in Gullivers Travels wrote about two nations who had been at war for many years over which end of a boiled egg you open! He was both taking the **** but also pointing out that most wars are entirely futile. He was also, I fee, commenting upon our desire to adopt a black or white position on things where we all know things are always a shade of grey.

Although not the originator of this thread I commited the grave crime (in some eyes) of admitting to giving up in two games. For this it would appear I am a bad person and possibly not even part of the human race any more... am I the only one who thinks that perhaps a little more give and take and a sense of humour would help in these exchanges?

I inhabit these forums whenever I am waiting for a move to be returned (aha, so I don't give in in all my games [:'(]) and i enjoy the cut and thrust or argument, and admire the erudite status of many of the posters. I do not like the judgemental and condemnatory attitude that effectively dismisses a person as they have different views about something.

Can we get off our soap boxes guys and accept that different people have different vies - and the best way of living together in any community is to communicate?

Well as one of the more famous "I can't take it anymore - I am going to run into the hills and cry for my Mummy" people, I can hol-heartedly say that it is mighty difficult to keep on going when every decision you make seems to blow up in your face and that every tool you have at your disposal has either failed you or you have squandered.

Every player wants an opponent that will stick to their guns and take the kicking when they are down, trusting in the fact that when the worm turns they will get the same treatment in return.

This is however, a pretty unusual game in its duration. You aren't asking your opposition player to hang in there for a week or even a month. You are asking for as much as a year before an allied player can see some light - in real time! Then, if they are tough enough to give you that you will have 2 years of pretty good same-on-same competition before the reverse will be true for the Jap player.

Now the majority of the players here will tell you they will do this - I would have labeled myself one of these before the big flop - but I used to not sleep trying to think of a way around my predicament. I used to play these moves over and over in my head, put serious effort into their creation, all to no avail as the number and capability of the enemy forces just overwhelmed you. So then I would say 'stuff it - this is only a game stop being such a ninny' only to have my whole RN fleet, torpedoed in a night attack (no less), because I didn't take it serious enough.

I will say, and with a pretty foul taste in my mouth too, that it stuffed with my head. I couldn't see any way out, especially when this much vaunted allied supremacy just didn't seem to count if you worked the game mechanics to their limits.

So, while we have all these people heaping scorn on those that throw in the towel, I will say from personal experience, 'that this is a game - not real war' - and while it is a competition there should be no large stigma associated with saying "you are better than me - well done". In my case the game was also the first I had played PBEM - remember how long this sucker is. So my newbie mistakes compunded and compounded.

If you can't - or wont abide this - then you are caging your opposition into something they hate for the duration, and that is some duration!
