Where, O Where...?

Post by Wild Bill »

Have the old Salts gone? WHere oh, where can they be? [&:][&:]

I love the many new faces [:D] that have presented themselves here in the last few months, but so many names pass through my head of the die-hard old timers

If you are still in the neighborhood, make yourselves known. Its always good to hear from you.

Generally these days I'm called an "Old Fart," [:D] but just in case I also qualify as an "Old Salt," Warrior checking in.

I'm here or should I say I'm back.

Not much goin' on these days in here.

I left for two reasons. I started playing CM, the fiacso and fighting about 8.0-8.3

I came back for your Korea scenarios.

Well, this is good to know. I'm delighted to hear some voices that I recognize. I see Warrior is still doing his scenarios...always challenging and many times grabbing themes that are rare and interesting. He has a couple up now at the Wargamer's Game Depot and I'm sure that they are available at SPWAW Depot.

J2K is back and that is good. I'm thrilled and honored to know that the Korean scenarios had that much appeal. I hope they are worth it for you. I've enjoyed your reports on the action.

Anymore of you out there still.

One who has apparently disappeared and I can't locate or even write is old Dingo, Neil Stalker. Anybody heard from this Mate recently?

Hello, I too am still around once in a while, lurking in the vast recesses of the Internet. Haven't been a lot into wargaming lately, there are so many other things. I don't know the criterion for being an old salt, but I think I joined in 2001.

Hey I'm still here as well BUT don't come here that often. Truthfully I'm waiting for Combat Leader to get closer to fruition for that. That and SZO (formerly WarfareHQ) keeps me kinda busy. Oh, and I also discovered TOAW-COW after having had the disc sit in a box here at home for over 5 years.

Well, well, some nice familiar faces. Great! Yeah, 2001 makes you a vet.

Double D, enjoy it to the max. There are a few of my scenarios in there, I think. I hope you enjoy them. If it covers Post Korea also, you'll find two of mine, Tet and the First Gulf War.

It is another great game.

Believe me, I know what you mean. I had to have surgery on both eyes for cataracts. They lasered out my lenses and put in artificial ones. My vision had gotten to 20/200 by the time they did it.

Its not bad. I have "floaters" now (ask your opthomaligist about that [:(], and have no close up vision worth a hoot but I can still see! [&o]

Speaking of old salts, I happened upon the General's Edition website last night and for some reason read the game credits.
Quite a list of SP celebrities and some people that I did not know were involved.
Hats off to them all.

Have no fear!! We're still here!! Just not as often as I would like. But I was thinking about you the other day as I was starting a new PBEM with my brother and I discovered the use of mines on the battlefield!! I now understand and appreciate your perverted affection for them!!!

We play very large battles, with the purchase points set at 20,000!! I always have points left over because I always max out the game engine and won't let me buy anymore. But this last time I had like 3,000 points left over and I decided to use them to buy mines. And boy did I mine the hell out of the battlefield. Now of course I could only mine on my side of it, but it's just as good if not better than setting up defenses!! The minefields do all that for you and don't run away or get destroyed for the most part. Normally I would just have my engineer squads start laying mines right away no matter where they're at cause you never know. But with this last one I took a page right out of your book!!! A beautiful sentiment!!!

Hope all is well with you too!

Hi Bill:

I am sure we are still around, but many have new interests. Some friends got me hooked on WITP and I am half through the grand campaign – Turn 301. I like to play scens from the old breed like you, Warrior, and others.

I still play SPWAW and still designing scens but mostly for friends and family. Completed a few new ones such as “Wake Island” and “Battan” in early 1942. Avid history reader and will try to finish some of my stories when I can find the time. [8|] I am involved in a booked by Charles MacDonald called “A Time for Trumpets.” Thinking seriously of designing a new scen called “Skyline Drive” about the early hours of the Battle of the Bulge. What a story! [X(]

Hope your eyesight gets better. Take care. You are the best I have ever seen. [&o]

Ah, now I don't feel so alone! A lot of you are tough and "salty," hanging in there. Time changes things. Games evolve, life has its ups and downs (too many of the latter it appears sometimes) and sometimes folks just move on.

That is life. But I've made some of the dearest, closest friends I'll ever have and never seen your faces. Yet, we are as close as brothers! I appreciate that more than you know.

Yes, the list of scenario gurus, testing aces and writers, plus all the technical contributions by talented men is formidable. That General's Edition site does list some real gaming heroes to be sure.

Well Recon, I hope you are sharing those fine scenarios such as Bataan and others. We need more enlightenment on the Pacific and what was done there, on all sides. You, as a lifetime leatherneck are quite qualified to give us that. Bring 'em on...
or as has been mistakenly attributed to the radio operator on Wake, "Send us....more Japs!" Not too many, please! [X(]
