Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
December 8th 2601
Hashirajima and Tokyo
Overheard radio transmission from Commander Mitsuo Fuchida over the skies of Pearl Harbor to Nagumo Strike Force locate approximately 200 miles NE of Pearl Harbor...“Surprise Attack Successful”.
War games conducted by Imperial Headquarters Army and Navy General Staff for two weeks revealed a number of flaws in the Empire’s initial planning for the coming war. The plans were developed under v1.5 of a program entitled “War in the Pacific”. IHQ considered the program useful but did observe several changes that needed to be instituted. However IHQ noted that these changes were probably minor and decided to forge ahead on schedule…time will tell.
To date our pilots inflicted a devastating blow to the American Pacific Fleet located at Pearl Harbor (unfortunately the American carrier force was not in port at the time.) Our pilots also inflicted tremendous damage upon the American Far East Air Force located at Clark Field in the Phillipines. North of the Phillipines, Batan Island was secured with little to no resistance. In addition, successful landings were made at Kota Bharu in Malaya and at Songhkia.
…so begins “Taiheyo Senso”
This game was originally started under v1.5 and was played for approximately 16 days... with the revelations about the AA and the changes recently proposed in v1.52. Toast and I agreed to restart the game
We are using Pry’s Scenario 34, a December 8th start using Andrew Brown’s wonderful map. The Scenario was updated as of 6/10/2005 with the OOB changes in noted in the v1.52 patch including the 155mm Field Gun being noted as an Army Weapon device as opposed to a CD device. Hopefully 1.53 or 1.54 or 1.6 will allow us to upgrade this as well….
Settings are as follows:
Jap. Sub Doctrine - off
Allied Sub Doctrine - off
FOW - on
Adv Weather - on
Allied Damage control - on
Hist. 1st turn - off
Player upgrades - on
Dec. 7 Surprise -off
Varriable Setup -off
Auto Sub - off
1 day turns.
Now hopefully some comments from CToast

RE: Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
December 9th, 2601 (12/8/1941)
The wargames have proven their worth....Nagumo Strike Force turned west to support operations in and around Wake Island. Through broken cloud cover scout planes discover the location of one of the missing American carriers...CV Enterprise. Though the weather inhibited air operations, by the time the afternoon strike arrived, all they could find was an oil streak...
The courageous commander of I-121 discovered the location of the PoW task force...evidently steaming for Java. Unfortunately the shallow waters off the north coast of Sumatra proved to be the subs undoing as it bottomed out and was still unable to escape the battleships screen of destroyers.
In further developments...a limited offensive in China drove back elements of the enemy at Nanchang.

RE: Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
The second day brings yet another disaster to the Allied forces. The Enterprise task force reversed course on its probe westward and rraced back to Pearl Harbor. The commander had considered taking a longer more southerly route, stopping by Johnson Island but decided that the fleet needed to combine it's carrier task forces as soon as possible to couter any Japanese move in the Central Pacific. South of French Frigate Shoals, the tf was located by the KB which had switched to a more southerly route and had located the Enterprise. The rest is history.
The Allied command is still trying to absorb the consequences of this disasters.

December 10, 2601 (December 9, 1941)
Things have started to settle down into a rythym...
Khota Bharu was occupied without a fight. Likewise forces of the Empire of Japan have taken Guam. Landings have occured at Laoag on the N. Coast of the Phillipines and a British Fleet fleeing Singapore through the straights of Malacca were caught by air units flying patrols from Indo-China.

RE: Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
December 11th 2601 (12/10/41)
In China....
Our glorious armies have captured the Chinese city of Linfen. The Battle for Hong Kong continues...
On a related note....
Private Kimono was executed earlier this morning for dereliction of duty. As the story goes when L. General Tadayoshi, commander 38th Div, Canton, China was asked why he did not advance on Hong Kong with his supporting elements, Gen Tadayoshi responded that he never received his final instructions. Pvt. Kimono who was tasked with ensuring that the orders were delivered had evidently spent the previous night at the local saki bar with one too many geishas and apparently did not think highly of the Emperor's wishes. Pvt. Kimono gave his life as an example so that such mistakes are not made in the future....
Small Naval Battles around Phillipines
Davao - Cruiser Division 5(-) CA Nachi supported by DesRon 7 intercepted several merchant ships fleeing the Phillipines and sank them. Nearby I-123 also sank a minesweeper.
Luzon - Subcasher Div 4 was murderously assaulted by American criminals operating wooden patrol craft. However, the day was saved when later in the afternoon CL Kuma overheard the distress calls and responded. Four of the American craft were promptly sunk.
also in the Phillipines....Laoag was captured by the Emperor's forces and landings took place in Apparri.
Elsewhere in the Pacfic... a mysterious explosion occurred on one of our doughty merchanman steaming in the Gulf of Thailand. Several Gunboats and Subchasers responded to the scene but found nothing...

Off the Coast of the Phillipines and in the Luzon Straight
A couple of inconsequential naval battles take place. A recent decision by the Naval General Staff to dedicate large numbers of aircraft to an anti-submarine role appears to be paying dividends as there are reports of several submarines having been sunk.
Luzon
The American base at Aparri is captured by the forces of the Emperor.
Mindanao
Elements of the 16th Army land at Davao in the early morning hours. Later in the day landings also take place at Cagayan.
South Pacific
The atoll of Tarawa was seized today.

RE: Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
December 13-19, 1941
Technical problems have delayed the latest news broadcast from Radio Tokyo. Dutch Patrol Boats have started broadcasting a strange and mysterious signal interfereing with combat reports from the front. Nevertheless we here at Radio Tokyo will strive to bring you the news as it happens when it happens...
In the Central Pacific today the island fortress of Wake was captured after undergoing nearly a weeks worth of bombardment by the BB's Mutsu and Nagato.
In the South Pacific forces of the empire of Japan have captured bases at Baker Island, Abemama and Makin.
In the Southwest Pacific bases at Lunga, Shortlands, Buin, Buna, and Lae have come under the control of the Empire of Japan. The harbor at Rabaul conitinues to resist.
In the Phillipines several bases have fallen....the latest San Marcelino and practically the entire island of Mindanao as well as Jolo.
In the Southern Resources Area the Dutch Occupation Garrison at Manado surrender after a brief struggle. The Oil Refineries at Brunei and Tarakan have also been captured. Unfortunately saboteurs destroyed 5/6 of the refineries in the Sultanate of Brunei. In the early morning hours of December 19th a daring landing at Singkawang took place. The invasion fleet narrowly escaped disaster after efficiently landing a specially trained unit of the Emperor's Army. As mentioned earlier in our broadcast Dutch PT boats have been wrecking havoc not only upon the airwaves we use but have also been harrassing shipping off of the coast of Borneo.
In Malaya, Alor Star and Georgetown have been captured and landings have occured at Kuantan.
In China near the city of Linfen our forces heroically threw back an attack by elements of the Chinese Army...
Till next time....remember to listen to Radio Tokyo for the latest news and entertainment.

"Greetings everybody! This is your Number One Enemy, your favorite playmate, Orphan Ann on Radio Tokyo—the little sunbeam whose throat you’d like to cut! Get ready again for a vicious assault on your morale, 75 minutes of music and news for our friends—I mean, our enemies!—in the South Pacific"....And now for the latest blow to your morale,
In the Southern Resource Area... on December 20 the Allied base at Singkawang in Southern Borneo was captured after a courageous and daring assault by Imperial Japanese troops. A day later imperial troops also invaded the Allied base at Kuching...
In Malaya... on December 22 the Allied base at Kuantan was captured after a brief struggle...
In the Phillipines...on December 22 Imperial Japanese troops engaged our friends, ah I mean enemies, in Manilla.
Elsewhere in the world...
December 20 - Goebbels broadcast an appeal for gifts of warm clothing for german soldiers serving in Russia...must be a cold winter in Moscow.
Admiral (King) Toast has been appointed to supreme command of US Naval forces.
December 21 - British raids deep inside Tripolitania in North Africa
December 22 - in Russia reports that a general offensive by the Soviets continues...Moscow claims to have recaptured 1500 cities, towns and villages in the last 25 days.
And Greetings and warm wishes to Mr. Churchill...hope you enjoy your stay in Washington for the conference with Mr. Roosevelt.
“According to union hours, we are through today! We close off another chapter of free propaganda in the form of ‘Music For You’—for my dear little orphans wandering in the Pacific. There are plenty of non-union boffs coming around the corner, so be seeing you tomorrow, but in the meanwhile always remember to be good!”

RE: Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
The invasion of Singakwang was a brillant and bold maneuver. The day before the landing, planes from Singapore had spotted the tf with APD's and damaged one of the fast destroyers. I figured something was up and gathered a Surface Combat TF in Batavia to try and intercept it. The Japanese player could not have planned it better, my tf was attacked by a submarine leaving Batavia and a destroyer was struck and severely damaged. The remainder of the destroyers found and destroyed the offending submarine but used up valuable ops points. The tf arrived of Singakwang too late to intercept the fast destoyers so I lost one destroyer (for a while at least) and Singakwang with no results.
Aside from my PT Boats, my naval forces have been a disappointment to say the least.

Unfortunately the damage to the APD was fairly severe and it sank returning to port. Score one for the Allies.

RE: Treespider vs CToast....Part Deux
January 1, 1942
Happy New Year!
With warm wishes for the coming year this is your sweetheart of an Enemy, your dearest propaganist , Orphan Ann on Radio Tokyo—that little itch in the middle of you back that you just can't reach! Get ready again for another relentless attack on your morale, this is our New Year's Special with in depth coverage of the swaree' in the Pacific!
But first an update of the weeks events:
In the Phillipines....
A new Imperial directorate for the cultivation of resources has been established in Manilla. Daily flights in and out of the airbase formerly known as Clark Field have commenced. Bataan is the now last refuge for Mr. MacArthur on the Island of Luzon. A pocket of resistance is still in place in the north east corner of Mindanao
In Malaya....
A fierce battle rages at Johore Bharu. All of the peninsula with the exception of Singapore, Mersing and Johore Bharu are now in Imperial Japan's hands.
On Borneo...
The Allied base at Kuching finally fell, maybe our boys should have prepared better.
In the South Pacific...
An Allied convoy was intercepted by a long ranging cruiser patrol at Pago-Pago. Reports are that several empty transports were sunk.
And at Rabaul...
The Allied garrison at Rabaul continues to hold, now these troops are worthy of the Code of Bushido. Too bad they will all be put to the sword...
Elsewhere in the world this week...
12/24 - In the North Atlantic... Free French forces, using corvettes and a submarine occupy the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon off the coast of Canada.
12/25 - On Eastern Front... Soviet offensives continue to succeed before Moscow.
In North Africa... The advancing Allies reach Benghazi and Agebadia. The Axis forces continue to withdraw.
12/26 - On the Eastern Front... The Germans continue pressure on Sevastopol. Some units of the 11th Army are threatened by Soviet landings in the eastern Crimea at Kerch.
In Occupied Norway... The arctic islands of Lofoten are the subject of a 260 man commando raid. Their purpose is to destroy the fish oil factories on Moskenesoy.
12-27 - In Occupied Norway... The British commando raids extend to Vaagso and Maaloy, landing nearly 600 troops to destroy communications and oil factories. Merchant and patrol craft are sunk. 243 volunteers are taken back to Britain to join Norwegian forces there.
