1.6 Aerial ASW

Post by Stvitus2002 »

In 4 turns in Allied vs AI ,Version 1.6,i've had 4 US subs hit by japanese aircraft. These were 1 to 4 hexes off the coast of Japan.
Has this happened to anyone else yet?

Take a look at all of the planes that start in Japan at the start of the war. The vast majority of them are a part of Home Defense Force. They can't leave Japan unless you pay PPs for them. The only real missions they can do are train, ASW or naval search. Two of the three will allow sub attacks. You may want to consider moving those subs a little farther from Japan. How many subs were there?

I can see what you're saying about the AI not moving aircraft out of the home islands. I've been stacking subs 1 per hex, three hexes deep off the coast from Tokyo to Osaka. So.. about a dozen on station, moving 1 hex each turn in a circular pattern to cover the approaches to these major ports.
Prior to 1.5 it worked well.

And no... i'm not trying to rile up Ron.[:D]

Just wanted to see if anyone else had noticed the *reduction* ,or lack of, aerial ASW attacks in
version 1.6 .

A supply thread (OK, we hijacked a thread to discuss supply) and an ASW thread on the same day. We are all trying to give Ron a heart attack. All we need now is a Land Combat thread and a Deathstar CAP thread to go active and Ron would either be in the hospital or banned from the forums.

Maybe throw in a McArthur thread to give Tristanjohn something to do today.

I think that we have to keep in mind that if there are a dozen subs close to the coast of Japan, where there are huge numbers of planes, the attacks/losses are going to increase.

Yep, but during daylight one would assume that at least a few of the subs have commanders which think it prudent to submerge during the day soooo close to enemy air....that's what they did historically until advent of sub mounted radars, in which case the sub would detect the aircraft early and submerge anyway. I'll go along with Nik about reducing the contact chance for subs being submerged during the day phase but treating subs as veritable surface ships for the search routines is a wee bit harsh.

Not much we can expect except perhaps drastically reducing the subs DL.

I've got an Allies vs AI game going in late '43. Upon one of the Beta updates (I forget which one), I noticed a dramatic reduction in the number of my subs off Japan being sighted and in the number being attacked and hit. There are still some sightings and still some hits, but much fewer. It was pretty bloody up until that update. It's still toned down in 1.60.
