Veteran units?

Post by sol_invictus »

I played KP and now am about to play my first campaign of BiI and I started to wonder if it was ever considered to have an intermediate unit rating between Regular and Elite, such as Veteran. I feel that there is to much of a jump from Regular to Elite for several units in BiI. I realize this is very subjective, but I feel that it would be more accurate to list the 1st ID and the HG as Veteran rather than Elite. While both were very solid Divisions, I think man for man, the Rangers, Royal Marine Commandos, 1st Fallshirmjaeger, and the American Aiborne Regiments are a step above the former. I don't think this would overly complicate the game and would add more quality distinction. Comments?

And remember to investigate the hotkeys - KP doesn't have 'em. Your game play will improve!

Hi all,

I agree with you Arinvald........... but I'm thinking (what else to do on long transcontinental flights -- besides gaming & sleeping) that such a distinction may already exist within the program's model i.e. the number of steps within & between units of near identical TOE. Take the 1st Canadian and British 23rd Armoured Brigades in Husky as an example. Substantially the same establishments but the Canucks are 3 steps (to reflect their relative inexperience) while the more experienced or "veteran" 23rd is 4 steps. Or maybe I just need to put on an oxygen mask now............
What does anyone else think??

Rob.

So we're at war with the Russkies eh?? I suppose we really ought to invade or something. (Lonnnng pause while studying the map)
Hmmmm... big place ain't it??

Rob,

You're correct. There's a distinct penalty for being green or poor quality (substandard) and a distinct bonus for being elite... veteran and average units are treated as the baseline (no penalty, no bonus)... the difference being a veteran unit could have more steps and/or they can have higher values per step compared to a similar unit that doesn't have veteran status.

Also there are many things that a scenario designer can to do reflect a veteran units, more and quicker auto step replacement, extra bullets etc..
Isn't that bizarre?

I think the quality difference is reflected in both the number of steps and the combat strength of the units. The units you mentioned (Airborne, Rangers, UK Marines) all have relatively high combat strengths and a large number of steps allowing them to not only sustain more casualties, but to retain their combat effectiveness even after losses. The Rangers and UK Marines, for example, are only battalions yet they have 2 steps and a relatively high combat strength for small (at this game scale) units.
