Play example online for Ln'L?

Post by benpark »

Mark and Co.-I was wondering what you consider the best "blow by blow" example of play out there at this point? Any links? I'm getting the previous incarnations fairly soon (when I have some time and my work area is cleared...), but I'm really interested in seeing some turns as they play out under this system. Thanks!

Hi Ben,

We have a SUPERB (I didn't do it ,so I can brag) animated example of play at
our homepage: www.locknloadgame.com .

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Watch Example of play... the helicopters will launch carrying you to the EOP page. Click on Watch Example of Infantry Combat (or something like that) and the Flash example will play.

You may also download a demo from our homepage, just click on the Downloads section.

Best,
Mark

I went through the example of play and the game seems very similiar to Advanced Squad Leader. That's a good thing, since ASL is my favorite boardgame.

I've only played a couple of introduction scenario to Squad Leader (not even advanced) and found the rules quite daunting.

Yes the two games seem similar, but rumours say that LnL is easier and, more importantly, can be played faster than ASL.

If possible, can the people in the know comment and compare the two games ?

Hi!

Nice site you got there Mark.

I especially like the use of sound. Why is it people never use sound on their sites?

Well anyway, I am not a boardgamer but I must admit, if there was ever a boardgame that twiked my curiosity, it was Lock 'n Load. I'll be watching your new effort with interest.

I'll have to admit, when the first LnL game (for Vietnam) came out, and I downloaded some example ruleset (or demo, can't remember which) that I was still a little overwhelmed by the rules.

I was (and still am) already converted to the "German games" mindset of having nice gamey bits to move around, many decisions, and not enough moves to do everything I wanted in one turn.

But, now that I've gone through the little flash demonstration of gameplay I'd have to say that it seems easier than I remember. That and the fact that this new game will center around the 101st and 82nd and I'm almost sold. I will have to download the current demo to be sure :).

Thanks, Ray. I think you would like it if you tried it, but I doubt that it is any better than Bull Run. :-)

The online example sold me. I haven't played a board game in years, and I was real reluctant to get another game where you move a unit, then sit and read a rule book for 30 minutes. I've got no time, no room, and I have to make special rules for giant space aliens (my two year-old and cats) intervening in the battles. Not to mention that board games are a bit more expensive than in the old Avlon Hill, SPI days. But, seeing the online example was great. (Sorry Mark, the example in this forum is a bit hard to follow without scrolling up and down for the map).

Hi Jef.
Games are similar because they use the same scale. After that, they are very different.
- Impulse system : a turn is composed by impulses. In one impulse, a player can activate one or more of his units and make them move or fire or laying smoke or... (etc). When a player has completed his impulse, it's to the other player to activate one or more of his units etc. It's a good system because it makes the game very simultaneous, with no "dead time". And the fact that you can't completely plan your actions is a good step to "realism". And, it's fun.
- No sequence of play : if you want a prep fire, a defensive fire, a close combat opportunity etc, you have to plan it with your impulses. Decisions are hard. It needs you take risks and to be concentrate, adaptable and fast. It's fun too. And once again, it translates well the chaos of a battle and it's good for realim. This system makes you feel IN the battle.
- rules are really easier but realism is clearly present (again), and , IMHO, more present than in other tactical games. Most of all, all is logical and homogen. The best tactician wins, not the best "rules lawyer". The system is pretty well designed, souple and flexible. The event and skill cards system allow to add some special rules for specific situations. The importance of heroes and leaders allow to simulate some of the numerous time when the end of a battle layed on a hand of extrordinary people or actions. And when you read vets stories, you know it's pretty realistic too. Still i played LnL, i thought it was very difficult to simulate that when keeping a realistic game. Lnl did it.
- Even with small scenario, one hour of play or less, the game stays very interesting and fun.

Well, i like a lot this game. It's fun fast and furious, but also very sophisticated.( Just look at the armor combat example in this forum). Enjoy !

Best,
Olivier

Hi Mark.
As soon as you'll laucnch the demo, it could be fun to organize a vassal tournament with the demo material (?). Good to attract new players if you announce it on several forums.

(And one of your millions dollars to the winner could attract a lot of potential players...)
